General

  • Small, cosy and family-run park a mile from Marazion
  • A short walk from St Michael's Mount
  • Free pool and spotless amenities

Sites near the coast are rather special. Particularly when they’re Cornish, less than a mile from a beauteous bay, and with a heated indoor pool in which guests can wallow wrinkedly all the winter day if the mood so takes them – for free…

Drive down a country lane surrounded by fields to reach small, family-run and exceedingly esteemed Wheal Rodney Holiday Park, a mile from Marazion and a short saunter to St Michael's Mount. It’s easy to drive to the other attractions of west Cornwall from here (the Lizard Peninsula, Land’s End and Penzance are all close by), but the kids won’t have time to say they’re bored before you’re at arty St Ives and the north coast, Helston and Flambards, or the Isles of Scilly from Penzance or Land's End.

The majority of Wheal Rodney’s guests are families, but their welcome extends to all, dogs included, who’ll probably wag their tails at the countryside walks straight from the site and the list of dog-friendly Cornish beaches available in reception.

The spotless facilities building has the site reception, shower blocks with free hot water, launderette and the aforementioned free swimming pool, open from 9am daily. Ice pack freezing and phone and gadget charging are also gratis for guests.

Other facilities on site include an Elsan point, recycling and a shop for essentials: if your holiday equals not having to cook, the Fire Engine Inn with a temptingly tasty menu and beer garden is five minutes’ stroll from Wheal Rodney. As with the site, dogs and children are whealy welcome too.

Pitch size, location within walking distance of Marazion, quiet, spacious pitch. L inked the swimming pool and it was good to have a shop on site. Level pitches.
Superb showers, no coins, no buttons to press, just masses of hot water. Great washing and dishwashing facilities and always good to see a microwave provided for campers.
Friendly staff and a very real feel to the site as it has permanent residents as well, though it is not a big site. Easy to see why this site gets booked up.

    Disliked:

Overhanging mature trees dropped rain onto the campervan roof, but also gave shelter from Storm Brian so overall a benefit probably.

Lovely location with views of fields and nice trees on the site, a short walk from Marazion. Toilets and showers spotless and a swimming pool on site too. Shop for necessities is very useful with daily deliveries of bread, pasties etc. from a local bakery. Very friendly lady on reception who made us very welcome.

    Disliked:

Our pitch was situated opposite the parking area that people use when coming to the swimming pool which is open to the public. We were only staying at the site for a couple of days but if coming for longer we would prefer a pitch away from the parking area as it did get quite busy.
It was a wet weekend, our pitch had some grass but a large area was hard packed earth which did get a bit muddy. I understand from the lady at reception that they are looking to improve some areas with hard standings, which would be ideal for the increasing number of motorhomes on the road now.

    Sodden Pitch,

From the manager...

Thank you for your review! We love being a small site as it means we can give a more personal level of service; we're please you found our facilities to be clean too as this is very important to us.

Unfortunately, when you arrived we had had a lot of rain and so our grassed pitches have suffered. This will be alleviated by next year as we intend to put a gravel 'road' to each pitch with half of each pitch near the complex being gravelled too.

Thanks for your time,
Donna and the team

    Disliked:

Pitch always in the shade due to high trees (this was pitches 9, 10, 11 & 12). General public could be asked to park in back car park when using the swimming pool. Lack of showers for females (only two). Not a secure site due to swimming pool open to public. One of the reasons we booked this site was for the swimming pool, but the pool was never available to just residents only, as all opening hours open to general public. The tap for collecting your water/drinking water was above waste disposal drain!.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review. We're pleased you'd consider staying again on pitches 4 or 5 and that you found our location to be good!

We are undergoing some tree trimming this winter - something we couldn't do when open to campers during the season as the sap would leak onto their vans/tents and permanently damage them so this will be improved. We had trimmed and felled many trees last winter as needed for safety.

We have tried different ways of having 'resident only' swim sessions - none of which were successful due to everyone having different schedules of eating, visiting the wonderful nearby attractions and evenings out; even after discussing times with differing groups of residents, the sessions were still empty and we were turning non-residents away. Therefore, we decided to reverted to opening to everyone as it tends to only be busy at points on the weekend when schools are not in session.

Thank you for your time.

Kind regards,

Donna and the team

Level pitch, quiet site. Clean well-managed site and facilities. Free swimming in indoor pool - well heated.

    Disliked:

In spite of rules and large notices many non-camper swimmers blatantly used the ladies ‘campers only’ showers and washing facilities which was very irritating.
The Wi-fi at £1 a day is expensive and didn’t work for two out of seven days. Other local sites give free Wi-fi.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review - we're very pleased that you found our staff to be friendly ad helpful - something we pride ourselves on!

We try very hard to 'keep an eye' on the corridor to ensure we catch anyone using the showers who shouldn't be - if you had informed us on reception at the time, we would have tried to speak to the people in question immediately. This hasn't been raised this year as an issue as we have been very proactive when admitting swimmers, constantly reminding of our pool rules.

We give a complimentary 24hr/1 device WiFi code when checking in so that you can contact anyone you may need to or check emails. We established this after a suggestion from a customer on a pitch-up review as we take our reviews very seriously and look to them to see where we might improve. Other sites may well give free WiFi, but often it comes with restrictions such as no-streaming etc. £1 a day is also relatively cheap in comparison other sites in the immediate area that we know well.

Thank you for staying at our site.

Donna and the team

Pitches well used and worn but to be expected with a grass pitch at end of season.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review!

We're pleased you found our surroundings peaceful and our staff friendly.

Hopefully, if you visit again, you will see that we're laying a little gravel on part of some of the pitches to hopefully ease the end-of-season 'grassless' issue.

Directions

Coming from the A30
Go through the village of Crowlas, pass The Star Inn (on your right) and then take a left at the crossroads (signposted Rospeath). Travel for 1.5 miles along the winding country lane without turning off. Pass under the bypass bridge and then bear a sharp left around the corner. Start coming up the hill to Marazion. We are just up the road on the right-hand side. Please do take this route if towing a caravan or in a large motorhome.

Coming from the Penzance side of Marazion
With St. Michael’s Mount and the sea on your right, travel up through the main street until you reach The Fire Engine Inn. Turn left up Shop Hill and continue straight out into the countryside without turning off (approximately 500 yards). We are on the left. Not suitable for those towing due to small streets in Marazion.

Coming from Helston road to Marazion
Take the first exit off the roundabout to Marazion. Pass The Mount Haven hotel on the left, then indicate right to take the tight turn up Shop Hill (directly opposite The Fire Engine Inn). Continue on this road for about 500 yards, straight out into the countryside without turning off. We are on the left.

If you are towing from Helston, turn right at the top Marazion roundabout, signposted 'Shop', into the estate. Follow this road around. Then, bear left and turn right at the telephone box. Follow this lane for approximately 500 yards and you will see us on the left-hand side of the road.

Please note: satnavs are brilliant things but don’t always bring you directly to us. They can often try and send you to Wheal Rodney Nurseries which is on the other side of the bypass! This involves farm yards etc so please do use satnavs to bring you to the general area, but note that we are reached by a normal tarmac road and you should not leave the road.

Local attractions

There are so many top-notch beaches around west Cornwall (25 within easy reach of Wheal Rodney) that it can be hard to pick where to stretch out on the sand/rookpool/surf at first… Marazion is a bonzer beach startoff point from Wheal Rodney, as not only it is a piffling mile away, but it has two beaches: the main Town Beach and a much quieter and hidden one at Steps Beach (the latter is dog-friendly all year round).

Overlooking Town Beach is the medieval castle on St Michael’s Mount, the rocky island halfway along Mount’s Bay and now managed by the National Trust. Both are within strolling distance of Wheal Rodney: sail out to the island from Mount’s Bay for a harbour tour and a gawp at the subtropical gardens, viewable when peering down from the castle battlements.

Fishing villages, clandestine coves and golden sands are speckled along the Cornish coast from Wheal Rodney: take a day at each if you can (the boss will understand) for fishing in Mullion and Porthleven, surfing at Sennen Cove and Praa Sands, diving and shipwreck hunting at Falmouth’s Porthkerris Beach, or just having a gape at the celebrated scenery of the Lizard’s Kynance and Kennack Sands.

When sand is dusted from toes, Marazion town centre is a gem for art galleries, antiques and jewellery: Penlee House at Penzance three miles away and Tate St Ives seven miles north are also a big draw for artistes. Both towns have several other art galleries, more beaches (of course) and the opportunity to sing very loud and tuneless sea shanties with pirates at Penzance.

The St Ives Bay Line from Penzance to St Ives is one of the most scenic you’ll see anywhere in the country; for added viewsomeness, walk to Penzance from Marazion along the South West Coast Path, stopping very frequently to snap the scenery at Mount’s Bay, Mousehole and the Lizard.

Thirteen miles from Wheal Rodney towards the southwest, have your photo taken at the famous signpost at Land’s End, where also cordially recommended is partaking of a Cornish cream tea at the Land’s End restaurant.

And while you’re in the area, stick around into the evening for a performance at the open-air Minack Theatre, 11 miles from Wheal Rodney in the direction of Land’s End. Its season runs from May to September, but theatre fiends can take a guided tour any time of year, something that also comes cordially recommended…
