  • Small, cosy and family-run park a mile from Marazion
  • A short walk from St Michael's Mount
  • Free pool and spotless amenities
Sites near the coast are rather special. Particularly when they’re Cornish, less than a mile from a beauteous bay, and with a heated indoor pool in which guests can wallow wrinkedly all the winter day if the mood so takes them – for free… Drive down a country lane surrounded by fields to reach small, family-run and exceedingly esteemed Wheal Rodney Holiday Park, a mile from Marazion and a short saunter to St Michael's Mount. It’s easy to drive to the other attractions of west Cornwall from here (the Lizard Peninsula, Land’s End and Penzance are all close by), but the kids won’t have time to say they’re bored before you’re at arty St Ives and the north coast, Helston and Flambards, or the Isles of Scilly from Penzance or Land's End. The majority of Wheal Rodney’s guests are families, but their welcome extends to all, dogs included, who’ll probably wag their tails at the countryside walks straight from the site and the list of dog-friendly Cornish beaches available in reception. The spotless facilities building has the site reception, shower blocks with free hot water, launderette and the aforementioned free swimming pool, open from 9am daily. Ice pack freezing and phone and gadget charging are also gratis for guests. Other facilities on site include an Elsan point, recycling and a shop for essentials: if your holiday equals not having to cook, the Fire Engine Inn with a temptingly tasty menu and beer garden is under 10 minutes’ stroll from Wheal Rodney. As with the site, dogs and children are whealy welcome too...

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Friendly staff, who went out of their way to be helpful. Lovely clean facilities. Peaceful location.

Disliked: Sharing facilities with pool users which at times was quite busy. No disabled facilities could be a problem for some people.

Electric grass tent or campervan pitch (large)

Liked: Lovely lady in the reception. Very helpful & cheerful. Sloping pitch so make sure you have levellers with you and a good torch. Pitch black at night...struggled to get back to the van without walking into the wall! Nice 20 min+ walk to St Michaels Mount. Booked last minute and didn't even know there was a pool. Didn't visit that but what a great bonus. Fantastic showers and no push buttons. Could a shelf or two be added for shampoos etc. would return if heading that way again.

Electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: The staff we met were really friendly and helpful it seemed that nothing was too much trouble. The pitches were nice and level and the fact that this nice small site had a pool was a nice surprise. The shop had the basics which is all you need. The dish washing facilities were in doors even supplied washing up liquid, brush ,dishcloth and tea towel. Had two washing machines tumble drier and a microwave. Toilet facilities were all nice and clean and plenty of free hot water.

Disliked: Only downside not that this will stop us from returning. That lights are timed and as my wife has a disability, lights would turn off leaving her in darkness which made her uneasy. The mens shower cubicle was a bit small with the shower curtain closed to keep your clothes dry it would stick to you but were nice other than that.

# 1 electric grass touring pitch (large)

Liked: Swimming pool is a massive bonus, useful site shop, friendly staff, lovely hot, strong showers, size of pitch, location (close to bus stop and good bus service), value for money.

Disliked: We could not reach the WiFi from our pitch but we did choose the one which was right by the entrance and probably furthest away from the signal.

Liked: The clean, Warm facilities - Showers without a push button. Dish washing room with Washing Machine and Tumble dryer. Indoor Heated swimming pool. Very friendly staff, happy to have a chat and help as they can.

Disliked: Few rocks in the tent pitches which made it a little tricky to peg out the tent.

Route directions

If travelling in a caravan or large motorhome, don't try to reach the site by going through the town of Marazion. Instead, go through the village of Crowlas, pass The Star Inn (on your right) and then take a left at the crossroads (signposted Rospeath). Travel for 1.5 miles along the winding country lane without turning off. Pass under the bypass bridge and then bear a sharp left around the corner. Start going up the hill to Marazion and the site is just up the road on the right-hand side.

Local attractions

There are so many top-notch beaches around west Cornwall (25 within easy reach of Wheal Rodney) that it can be hard to pick where to stretch out on the sand/rookpool/surf at first… Marazion is a bonzer beach startoff point from Wheal Rodney, as not only it is a piffling mile away, but it has two beaches: the main Town Beach and a much quieter and hidden one at Steps Beach (the latter is dog-friendly all year round). Overlooking Town Beach is the medieval castle on St Michael’s Mount, the rocky island halfway along Mount’s Bay and now managed by the National Trust. Both are within strolling distance of Wheal Rodney: sail out to the island from Mount’s Bay for a harbour tour and a gawp at the subtropical gardens, viewable when peering down from the castle battlements. Fishing villages, clandestine coves and golden sands are speckled along the Cornish coast from Wheal Rodney: take a day at each if you can (the boss will understand) for fishing in Mullion and Porthleven, surfing at Sennen Cove and Praa Sands, diving and shipwreck hunting at Falmouth’s Porthkerris Beach, or just having a gape at the celebrated scenery of the Lizard’s Kynance and Kennack Sands. When sand is dusted from toes, Marazion town centre is a gem for art galleries, antiques and jewellery: Penlee House at Penzance three miles away and Tate St Ives seven miles north are also a big draw for artistes. Both towns have several other art galleries, more beaches (of course) and the opportunity to sing very loud and tuneless sea shanties with pirates at Penzance. The St Ives Bay Line from Penzance to St Ives is one of the most scenic you’ll see anywhere in the country; for added viewsomeness, walk to Penzance from Marazion along the South West Coast Path, stopping very frequently to snap the scenery at Mount’s Bay, Mousehole and the Lizard. Thirteen miles from Wheal Rodney towards the southwest, have your photo taken at the famous signpost at Land’s End, where also cordially recommended is partaking of a Cornish cream tea at the Land’s End restaurant. And while you’re in the area, stick around into the evening for a performance at the open-air Minack Theatre, 11 miles from Wheal Rodney in the direction of Land’s End. Its season runs from May to September, but theatre fiends can take a guided tour any time of year, something that also comes cordially recommended…
