General

  • Cornish yurts, bell tents with first-class views all set separately
  • Half a mile's walk from Polperro village with restaurants, cafés, pubs
  • Eco-friendly with solar power and natural spring

What a smashing little site is West Kellow Yurts in Cornwall, ten minutes' drive from the lovely town of Looe and set on a hillside between Polperro and Lansallos. (Before you read any further, we suggest you look at the site pics.)

We're not sure which we're more in envious love of here: the splendid countryside and sea views (really, look at the site pics), or the thoughtful touches put into the yurts and bell tents placed on a nine-acre field of an organic farm.

Want your own hammock to sway gently in the Cornish breeze or look at the stars? Campfire tripod, Dutch oven, barbecue and kebab stewers on each pitch? Own personal picnic bench and outdoor seating area for communal banquets? Done, done and done.

Matt and team have set everything up here so guests can start seriously relaxing the minute they arrive: a welcome pack will await and the yurts have a mini kitchen equipped with gas burner and kettle for the first cuppa (the bell tent has a gas burner and there's also a well-equipped communal kitchen on site with gas hobs, fridge freezer, microwave, coffee room).

The communal kitchen is in the amenities block, which also has a luxury and modern wetroom with loos and hot showers.

Also on site, wanderers will find a most pretty wildlife pond – again, have a look at the site pics…

Please note

We don’t have a staffed reception area and may not always be on site, so please contact us when you are on your way with your estimated time of arrival and we will be there to welcome you. You must provide your booking ID.

wet wood for cooking heating cleanliness off social area,s

From the manager...

Shame you didn't enjoy your stay, it's difficult to enjoy camping in such heavy rain. Unfortunately, i think you only saw the wood others had left behind beside the camp fire. There is plenty of dry wood in both the communal lounge area and log shed, but maybe i could have outlined this more clearly. We are actually upgrading the lounge area. It was initially only meant as somewhere to store a 2nd fridge freezer, to keep the wood dry and basically just somewhere to charge your phone etc. However, it's now being used for board games/playing cards/drinking tea. So because of this, i shall upgrade the bark chippings floor to a wooden floor and decorate it accordingly with nice chairs and lanterns/fairy lights etc. I am currently doing lots of upgrades and i have a brand new yurt on the way as well so it should be looking very sharp pretty soon =)

The location of this site is great, quiet and away from busy areas but close enough to drive to tourist areas and beaches.

    Disliked:

The whole site is showing its age and could do with some investment; for example a grate missing in the woodburner and the vents being stuck so unusable, a BBQ with no cooking grill, firepits which are more hills than pits. Cleaning also doesn't seem a strong point.
There are 2 bathrooms instead of 2 toilets and 2 showers. This can make things difficult in the mornings and evenings when both showers are in use and you need the toilet!
Communal kitchen is less than basic and we avoided it as much as possible.
First yurt leaked so much that the whole floor was covered in water and the kids bed was soaked. Second yurt was drier but still leaked around the edges.
Website / Pitchup description is very misleading.

From the manager...

It's difficult to enjoy a camping holiday with such an EXTREME amount of rain. (i think we had 2 inches in 1 day). Some of the local houses actually fared worse even with sand bags outside. Then on these type of wet days, someone borrowing your BBQ grill for their campfire to toast marshmallows becomes a huge issue. I would just go out for dinner and come back fairly late if it's such heavy rain like that, rather than battle it out with a campfire. It was only 3 or 4 days of torrential rain this summer, but that was 3 or 4 too many!

Cleanliness and everything was outdated, but with a bit of investment and TLC this could be a great place to holiday

From the manager...

It is nice and quiet yes, but I agree, we are actually upgrading the communal areas. The bark floor in the lounge is a bit too rustic and does look a bit tatty now so a new floor is being organised. One of the tea lit lanterns had received some damage, so that's been replaced as well. Lots of happy campers this year but i shall upgrade everything accordingly with some investment for sure.

Our family spent three nights at West Kellow yurts and would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys being surrounded by lots of space in a stunning location.

We arrived during a thunderstorm and experienced much more wind and rain throughout our stay, however our yurt valiantly stood up to the elements and we remained dry (and more importantly warm thanks to the log burner) inside.

The kitchen, which on first appearance seemed very basic, was actually a really pleasant place to have breakfast and well-stocked with utensils and crockery.

The showers were always hot, self contained and reliable.

My children loved running around the field in the wild Cornish weather, roasting marshmallows over the outdoor fire and playing in the hammock. They didn't seem to notice the lack of wifi, which we considered a positive (although my phone had a good reception if needed).

Matt provided really detailed directions - listen when he says ignore the satnav and head straight to Polperro! - and had obviously put a lot of effort into compiling a useful book of things to do and see locally.

    Disliked:

The indoor communal area was a bit too rustic for my liking, but as our yurt was so comfortable we didn't feel we needed to use it.

From the manager...

Thank you for the comments. The kitchen is handy for a quick breakfast in the morning with all the pots n pans etc. The communal area is quite new and mainly just a place for the fridge freezer, somewhere to charge your phone and to keep the wood dry. However, we are upgrading it next year so it will have a better floor than just bark chippings. More functional at the moment i would say.

Great destination. Greeted by Matt, the owner. He also helpfully guided us in over the phone. We really enjoyed the simplicity of the site. Yurts wrere spaced so as to give privacy. They were all screened from one another too. Showering facilities were very basic, but hey, that's what we liked. There is a very basic kitchen set up in a cabin. It also allows you to store fridge and freezer items. If you are squeamish about the state of toilets then take a towel to cover the glass panel door. Also take flip flops for the wet room. My wife, myself and our son really enjoyed our stay here.

We were looking for a large private space that was peaceful, with good views, and a location close to the sea, along with space for our 2 dogs to roam around. Luckily we found all of that here so certainly ticked all our boxes.
The wild life pond is also worth a bit time spent down there, as it is a lovely peaceful spot to relax.
The Yurts are a good size as is the outside space.

Scenic location, very relaxing and 'back to nature', private space ... 22/04/2017

Scenic location, very relaxing and 'back to nature', private space around yurts including bamboo fence around, private hammock and chair, private fire pit for cooking. Lovely location, loads around to do if you want to, or just relax and soak up nature. Near to pretty local harbour village (Polperro) well-blessed with 5+ pubs. The owner provided great information in advance. Kestrel Yurt was very nice inside - bit dark but good with tealights on (provided) and the 3 main yurts all have log burners for warmth, with basket of wood provided. Great challenging walks locally including 2-3 hours along the coast to Looe - footpath all the way and incredibly scenic.

    Disliked:

Nothing in particular. A private toilet for each yurt would be good, but we knew in advance that there were two communal loo/shower rooms between the three yurts and these were clean and well maintained. The walk uphill from town is a slog but OK if you're fit and prepared to take your time - otherwise the taxis are abundant and only cost £6 or so.

From the manager...

Thanks Ian. A nice accurate view of the campsite. Hope to see you return one day.

Stayed at west Kellow yurts over the Easter bank holiday
The yurt was lovely with the log burner in and everything was laid out perfectly
The campfire was well used too
The site was beautiful with just the right amount of back to basics
The showers/toilets and kitchen all very clean
Site very peaceful and made the weekend very relaxing but still close enough to get to beaches and get to shops nearby

Also a perfect site for dogs
My springer spaniel loved bouncing through the long grass on site

    Disliked:

    no real dislikes to add

Could of done with a slightly thicker duvet but that's just nit picking

From the manager...

Thanks for the great comments above! Makes the job much easier to hear people are having a nice time. I accidentally put the summer duvet in that yurt, but it has the correct thicker one now, along with the usual thick throws. Camp fires and BBQ's make a summers evening don't they. I'm glad i gave each yurt their own camp fire area next to their yurt.

Directions

From the A38, follow the signs towards Looe. At Widegates, take the diversion to Sandplace Road which will take you to Looe along the bottom road (the top road is closed).

Once in Looe, go over the bridge and follow the signs towards Polperro. After about 10 meters you'll go down the hill into Polperro and see the Crumplehorn Pub with its large waterwheel. Go straight over the mini roundabout here.

About 15 meters after the mini roundabout, take the first right up Kellow Hill. You'll go past Great Kellow Camping, and we are the third turn on your left for West Kellow Farm. The gate for West Kellow Yurts is the first on your left (after about 20 meters) once you've turned down the farm road for West Kellow Farm.

Local attractions

The narrow winding streets of the village of Polperro, half-mile walk across the field and down a lane from West Kellow Yurts, are perfect places to while away a day or an evening, especially as the village's several pubs (four with beer gardens) often have live music and performances in the summer months.

If you're in village in June, we recommend the Polperro Festival; if you're in village any other time of year, we recommend the Polperro Heritage Museum of Smuggling and Fishing (aarrr): you may already know that both have their place in Cornish history… The museum is open from March to October, handily at the same time as West Kellow Yurts.

There's loads more to see within easy driving distance from your hammock whether you want a secluded cove, popular surfing spot, the walks of the South West Coast Path or well-known Cornish attractions like the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan, both nearby.

Looe and Fowey, both harbour towns, are ten and 20 minutes away respectively, Fowey via the passenger ferry from Mevagissey.

At Looe, look for the trawlers on the quay (pic alert) and take a boat trip out from the beach to spy the sharks – you can hike the 12 miles of the South West Coast Path from here to Fowey if you fancy it...

Or get riled up at Adrenalin Quarry at Menheniot, 'throwing people off cliffs since 2009', where you can toss your beloved off said cliffs, zoom over the lake in a zipwire and take the Giant Swing ride – extra stomach possibly required.
