Penbugle Farm

9.2

Those among you who like luxury berths, teeny tiny farm sites, cracking customer service and picking up fresh organic eggs/rare breed meat to sizzle gently over the campfire should flock to Penbugle Farm (‘shepherd’s hill’ in Cornish) for some properly peaceful days.

Even by Cornish standards, the location of Penbugle Farm is one to toot about: between the old market town of Liskeard and the fishing port of Looe; 25 minutes from the Tamar Bridge and the Devon / Cornwall border, and halfway between the highlights of Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor. It’s run by the five members of the hospitable Ridout family, who have been living on and farming this land since moving from Dorset in 2005: if this is your first visit to Cornwall, they’ll be happy to share their tips and info on things to do.

On the farm, you won’t even hear a car engine roaring past your pitch – cars are only allowed in the designated parking area outside the paddock to keep things as safe and sedate as possible on site. (Fret not if you’re thinking this means you have to stagger to your pitch or wigwam with armfuls of kit; wheelbarrows and trolleys are provided to cart your stuff/over-excited small children/the dog along to where you’re staying.)

Whether guests wheel their bits and bobs to pick a tent pitch, bed down in a bell tent or wake up in a wooden wigwam, they all have access to the pristine Penbugle facilities including loos, showers, a washing-up area with hot and cold taps, and a cleanly kept communal kitchen with cooker, microwave, fridge, kettle, pots and pans (recycling facilities are available too).

Outdoors, there are picnic tables to park at and have your campfire-cooked meal; you can pick up fresh farm and local produce on site when available, as well as wood and fuel for a campfire or barbie. And don’t forget your torch and wellies: this is serious stargazing country because of the low light pollution…cosmic.
