  • Well-maintained pub site in the peaceful village of Breage
  • Touring field adjoining the pub, five minutes from the coast
  • Pub meals served at lunch and dinner every day, using local produce
Park up, plate of pub grub, couple of pints, then a mere two-minute toddle to get to your bed – what a cracking way to spend an evening (and with none of the usual disputes over whose turn it is to be designated driver…) It helps of course, that The Queens Arms, in the Cornwall village of Breage and three miles from Helston, is a rather fine pub in its own right. This family-friendly place comes with all your classic country-inn tropes (beamed ceilings, open fireplaces, splendid range of real ales) and is a tiptop place to eat, serving up meals at lunch and dinner every day, plus a traditional roast on a Sunday (of course). No microwave meals here – everything’s created with local produce, sometimes from as close by as the pub’s own allotments. Come by in summer and you may find the barbecue in action while folks dine alfresco; in winter you’ll possibly prefer to angle for a seat by the fireside. Kids (being somehow immune to such temperature variations) will no doubt be out in the playground whatever the season. Your little patch of all this is just next door, with spacious pitches and access to electrical hookups and water points. There aren’t any loos or showers in the field, but you’re welcome to use pub loos during opening hours.

Local attractions

Settle in here and you’re well-placed for all sorts of Cornish jollies. Beach days are a couple of miles away at Rinsey or Praa Sands (the latter having an excellent rep as a place for sandcastle construction), and other coastal attractions including the fishing village Porthleven and the island-based castle St Michael’s Mount are within a 15-minute drive. Continue west for 40 minutes or so and you’ll come to Land’s End. Eagle-eyed small sorts and thrill seekers will no doubt clock the signs for Flambards Theme Park as they pass – the rollercoasters, play areas and indoor exhibits are about a 10-minute drive from the pub. Kids may also like to hang out with the funny finned types at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary (20 minutes away) or wander around Roskilly’s Farm (half an hour) to see where all that tasty ice cream comes from. Kids in tow or not, how about a leisurely stroll around the gorgeous estate at Glendurgan (half an hour), the subtropical gardens at Trebah (35 minutes) or the famed domes of the Eden Project (an hour)? If it’s coastal rambles that are more your style, the Lizard Peninsula (with the South West Coast Path running around its edge) is about 20 minutes away.
