Out in the Open ....
... no ordinary campsite! Deliberately small-scale, with limited numbers & lots of space. Friendly atmosphere. Excellent facilities & moorland views. We offer camping & 'glamping'; with shepherd's huts, & a tipi, for hire. Centrally situated & within easy reach of north & south coast beaches. Gay-friendly & dog-friendly!
The area is steeped in mining history, is part of the Wendron World Heritage Site and there are several engine houses within sight of the property. Walkers will find footpaths linking the farm to the moorland beyond. There are many bridle-ways locally for cyclists, as well as a network of off-road cycle- paths a few miles away.
The local pub in Porkellis is very friendly, does excellent lunches & evening meals, has occasional entertainment & is within walking distance! ( http://starinnporkellis.com/ )
There are 24-hour supermarkets in Falmouth & Helston; both a short drive away & farmer's markets, full of local produce, take place in all major towns.
Stithians Lake is about 3 miles away, (less by footpath), and provides a range of water-sports for all levels. There is an award-winning pub with excellent food alongside the lake, (www.golden-lion-inn.co.uk) & a very good local butcher.
Porthleven, (just outside Helston), offers beaches, harbour, fishing & canoeing trips, pubs & fish restaurants. Pothleven Cycle Hire offer free delivery of bicycles to the campsite, (www.porthlevencyclehire.co.uk )
Helston is the gateway to the beautiful Lizard peninsula & also nearby is the Helford River, (home of Du Maurier's 'Frenchman's Creek').
Falmouth has 4 beaches, hosts a variety of sailing regattas, is home to the National Maritime museum & now has its own Rick Stein's fish & chip shop! There are a range of boat trips from the quay, visiting places such as St Mawes, Frenchman's Creek, Trelissick Gardens & Truro; many stopping on the way at Smuggler's Cottage for a cream tea!
The cathedral city Truro is a 20 minute drive & has a wealth of small, independent shops & good restaurants to explore.
Other local attractions include Poldark Mine, Flambards Theme Park, Gweek Seal Sanctuary, Goonhilly & a number of sub-tropical gardens.
Lands End, St Michael's Mount, The Eden Project & Lost Gardens of Heligan are all under an hour’s drive.
The surfing beaches of the north coast and the sailing waters and waterside villages of the south coast are all within around 15 minutes drive.
We have a recommendations board at the campsite with our own & campers' ideas on where to go & what to do, which is regularly added to.
