General

  • Near Kennack Sands on the Lizard Peninsula
  • Campfires allowed: kindling and logs for sale
  • Bar with carvery, all you can eat deals, beer garden and bouncy castle

'I’m free, to do what I want, any old time...' Free spirits will enjoy Namparra Campsite, near Kennack Sands on Cornwall’s Lizard Peninsula: visitors are at liberty to light their own campfire and can pick their perfect spot within the lush six-acre camping meadow to get the best of the gorgeous sea views. Fellow residents include a handful of friendly goats and a pondful of ducks and moorhens.

With the Cow Shed Bar just a short stroll away, guests can also freely sample the local cider and scrummy homemade cocktails over a game of pool, without any arguments about who is designated driver.

The Shed serves all you can eat breakfasts every day during school holidays, all you can eat curry once a week and a carvery on Sundays. It also has regular entertainment and the beer garden has been extended to house the free bouncy castle assault course for the kids to bounce around at.

Wooden cabins house the showers and loos, and there’s a sheltered washing-up area and a small laundry room. You can get kindling and logs for your campfire on site, or dig your own firepit.

    The owners were nice !

    Disliked:

There was to many tents on the site. Plus if you like to get to bed at 11.00 you have no chance here. Groups of pissed up people coming back from the bar late on causing a right noise. Plus having a dog there and all that late at night does not help it.

Do not come here if it's going to rain !! I lost a days kayaking because the campsite was flooded and starting to look like the Somme ! It would help if there was at gravel track around the fields. It took 5 hours wait for the field to dry out to get up it. The owner did offer us a tow ! But my point is I should not need one.

Lots of hot water, good washing machine and dryer, friendly owners, not deliniated pitches, plenty of space, lovely walk to the beach (20 mins away)

    Disliked:

very steep slope in places, the stream was difficult to cross and could do with a boadwalk over it.

Friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere, the lovely, family friendly Cow Shed bar on site with excellent quality food, from breakfasts to snacks and delicious fish and chips. Free phone charging, lovely hot showers, spacious site with trampoline and play areas for kids. Camp fires allowed.

    Disliked:

The on-site shop only sells milk, sweets and toys - no problem if you can drive to Helston for supplies but not great for a hiker like me whose budget doesn't stretch to having the delicious pub food every day (sadly!).

Great spot , very friendly staff , facilities basic but showers were warm. Loved the cow shed for breakfast and curry night. Could have open fire and pitch your tent pretty much anywhere in the field

    Disliked:

Found the residents very noisy till early hours in the morning. Some campers actually complained to there faces getting up to tell them to be quiet. A little more TLC around the place would make it a more pleasant place to be.

It was our first time here and we enjoyed our stay, kids loved meeting new children and playing on the trampoline, on arrival to check in I was met by friendly faces and a loving dog, plenty to do around that area but plenty for the kids to do on the grounds if you liked to stay on site,

    Disliked:

I disliked the fact that no one told us about the bad patch of mud of the far right corner, after going to pitch up there we got stuck in mud, the lovely people next to our tent helped us out and informed us that the people who where there before us got stuck there, so the owners were aware of this. Maybe put some tape or something around that part,

we arrived here on a wet day, owners and staff greeted us and we immediately knew we were going to love this laid back , chilled , what we call "proper" camping experience. We had to wait for a break in the rain so we had coffee in the cowshed bar and later in our stay tried out the fish and chips (the best ive ever had !) prices are very reasonable and the food of high standard.
we were allowed an open fire which for me makes this site perfect !! toasting marshmallows under the stars , was the highlight of mine and the childrens holiday.
We enjoyed meeting the animals and the children loved the inground trampoline. Toilet faciities are clean and tidy and the showers are lovely and warm , good pressure and best of all no push buttons !!
all in all a great all round campsite , with a lovely atmosphere and we will certainly be returning.

    Disliked:

-not really a dislike but some of the pitches were on a slight slope but as you get to choose exactly where yu go then this was not a problem for us.
    - LEAVING!

From the manager...

Thankyou so much for your review, i did have to laugh as you used one of the computers in the bar , it looks like you had not logged in to your own pitch -up account and has come up with our own managers details :/ If you do see this , would it be possible for you to re-write the review from your own account ?? all the same thankyou very much for your kind comments and we hope to see again :)

The location was nice, that's about it really.
    Kennack beach was lovely,
Potters bar nearby is much better pub.

    Disliked:

    Very scruffy on entry,
Owners using the front room like an internet café, kids sat around with feet up on chairs.. and someone asleep on a wooden bench, fairly intimidating for guests.
No one around when we checked in, except a young kid around 12 in the bar.
Could of camped for free as no one checked us in or asked if we had paid.
The bar itself Is dirty and lack of stock, only lager on pump. Optics mainly empty too. seen cigarette butts on the floor by the bar when we went in....Lots of clutter on the bar and tables filled with junk.
No hot water or hand drying facilities in the bar toilets. Toilets also very smelly and in need of a good clean. Also a room opposite door open appears to be a junk room, should be closed and locked.
The beer garden is full of dog poo or pig poo as a pig wonders free, not good in a childrens play are, also chicken poo on the tables.
Hard to tell who was staff as they all sit at the bar drinking and take in turn to serve.
Wouldn't eat there, as if the state of the outside and bar is to go by, god only knows what the kitchen is like.
The campsite would be nice but the grass is about 4ft long with a circle around the edge cut to camp on... such as waste of space.
The showers are reasonable, not the cleanest but don't except that camping anyway.

From the manager...

Thankyou for leaving your review, I am however quite sad it is quite so negative! Namparra is a family run campsite , there will always be children around as we have to run the business and also raise our family, although for the most part they are happily mixing in with children from the campsite!! The young man in the bar who checked you in is actually 15 , this is the first year he has been old enough to begin to help us out along with his niece . These 2 are learning the ropes as quickly as they can but confidence is something that takes a little time but we know they will get there. (we did feel extra sorry for the young guy in question however as he relayed the check in process he had with you and apart from for getting to check the name in the book , he did pretty well in his mind, he said he did his best to answer your questions!!)
At this time of year it is just not practical to fully load the bar , there is not enough turn over to warrant it and wasting alcohol is just not "cowshed" style ! We do however in the main season have a fully loaded bar including many guest ales sourced from local breweries .
The animals here are one of our favourite assets and many people book here time and time again to see them, "Doris" is our house pig after being rescued and saved by ourselves. We have now realised that maybe her visiting all the children in the beer garden is not practical so the hole in the fence she made to get in there ,will now be fixed (quite sad for some :( ) Our free range chicken "dixie" does however lack a little toilet training however !! but we do all we can to make sure her mess is cleaned up as soon as spotted.
The cowshed however has the highest hygiene rating due our hard work and determination and our customers who eat here will tell you , you missed out not trying it !
All of us are friendly here and try to make everyone feel welcome including some who you may not have even realised are staff and you encountered them every day , We are laid back and you are quite likely to find us with our happy campers sharing a drink or two with them. For most this is something people love this is not just our jobs, we are here all day everyday through the main season, this is our life !
The campsite itself is actually advertised as a farm campsite , it is a working farm and the grass in the centre of the field is baled and is due to be done in the next week as long as the weather holds. it is not ever there in the man season.
i hope you do decide to come back and give us a chance and see how reviews help us too improve and we do take negative reviews very seriously. I assure you , you will be made to feel most welcome. :)

Excellent Standard Campsite with Good Simple Necessary Facilities 05/07/2017

Reviewer's country: United Kingdom David S. Mobile phone icon Confirmed

  • Liked:

    - Campsite location is brill - on the map it seems far away from everything but you're really not. The Lizard is close to it all.
    - Campsite is wonderfully quiet (at least when we went)
    - Toilet, shower, washing up facilities are all excellent for a campsite so non-commercialised
    - One of the cheapest campsites available in Cornwall.
    - Great friendly pub down the road called the Potters Inn or something like that
    - Walking distance to Kennack Sands beach which is beautiful
    - Trampolines entertained us on our walk to and from the toilets (even though we're adults)

    Disliked:

    - Lack of hospitality: upon arrival, upon raised questions about the area and where to get fire logs, upon leaving (nobody was aware we were there for the week). This is a real shame because it put us off visiting the campsite's pub The Cow Shed which looked as dead as the owners. (This isn't to say they weren't friendly - just shy and not helpful or welcoming at all)
    - Weren't aware that we'd paid and weren't about to check (so we felt a bit like we could've turned up and camped for free)
HOWEVER - for the price we paid and the down to earth camping experience we received (with the addition of some simple and nice facilities) ... we cannot complain about the hospitality. It's not a hotel after all. Just maybe they could care more about the money that we'd paid them to stay on their land. We could've found any old field otherwise.
    - In the rain the drive out of the field almost became a rescue mission... but unless they put ugly gravel drives in this is to be expected.

WOULD STAY AGAIN JUST WOULDN'T HAVE SAME EXPECTATIONS - as our first holiday together as a couple no welcoming greeting spooked is a little.

Local attractions

About 20 minutes’ walk from Namparra Campsite you’ll find Kennack Sands, a fantastic family beach with a great café; a similar walk in the other direction takes you through a picturesque valley to Poltesco, a hidden cove with a pebbly beach and the photogenic ruins of an old serpentine works, and the Lizard Point with its iconic lighthouse.

This part of Cornwall is peppered with enchanting fishing villages, including nearby Cadgwith: if you’re lucky enough to be here on a Friday night (known in these parts as Saint Inebriatus’ Eve!), you can join the renowned Cadgwith Singers for a singalong of sea shanties in the local pub.

There are loads of good days out for the family, too: the seal sanctuary at Gweek; Cornish Camels for tractor rides, a giant sandpit and lots of animals, including, of course, camels; the Flambards Experience theme park; and the Poldark Mine, for a glimpse into the life of a tin miner and a wide range of fun activities including gold panning, candle dipping and pottery throwing.
