General

  • Secluded and peaceful park in a rural setting
  • A few miles from the beach
  • Two-acre dog exercise area

Avoid the madding crowds on your summer sojourn to Cornwall and stay at this green, secluded and peaceful park instead: Lower Polladras Touring Park has had previous guests waxing lyrical about its peace, its quiet, its lovely location and its very friendly owners Carole and Graham.

The park is in a rural setting four miles from the beaches of Cornwall’s south coast and within easy reach of coastal and countryside walks. It’s in a top spot too for south-west Cornwall explores with Penzance, the Lizard Peninsula and Land’s End no more than half an hour’s drive away. Yet blissful peace will always be yours when you potter back to pitch, as Lower Polladras is set over four acres and has no noisy bar, clubhouse or evening entertainment.

Carole and Graham are very environmentally minded and are always improving the park to make it as green and sustainable as possible: low wattage bulbs are used throughout and recycling is paramount. Heaps of info is displayed about non-car ways of getting around the local area, in the form of bus timetables on display and details of walks from the park given to all guests, and the well thought-out nature trail leads to a games field with play barn, football goals and a climbing frame to wrestle the kids away from their consoles.

Dogs are welcome, and the two-acre exercise area on the edge of the park should keep Fido pretty stress-free too...

After a long drive to the location, we arrived to a warm, friendly welcome by the lady owner at reception. She explained everything we needed to know in full detail and was very helpful. The site is very clean and had everything you need for a nice pleasant break away. The site was busy but still was so quite and peaceful and the other guests were very friendly.

Great campsite, ideally located for Porthleven, Helston and journeys around the peninsula. Graham and Carole gave us a lovely welcome and were happy for us to check in to our pitch slightly early. Torrential rainfall in the preceding week meant some of the tent pitches had been waterlogged so Graham advised us where best to pitch our tent to avoid sodden ground. The tent field is a lovely quiet area with large pitches, more than sufficient for our 4m bell tent and 12 x 12 awning, without feeling like we were on top of anybody. The amenities are also excellent: clean, hot showers including a family shower room; washing up area with four sinks; games room for the kids with table football, table tennis and a pool table; a well stocked shop with a freezer available for your ice blocks (donations to local charities in lieu of any payment). Carole offered plenty of advice on what's on in the area and there was your usual supply of leaflets and pamphlets for places to visit around the area. Our son loved running around and playing with the other children on the site after our days out. Lovely quiet site in the evening, although as I mention, we were in the camping area which is slightly more secluded and away from the main site. Highly recommend Lower Polladras. Thanks for having us.

Very nice quiet site with great facilities for children.
Arrived early but Graham very happy to let us go on our pitch which was ready.

    Disliked:

While taking a shower in the disabled shower, the cleaner opened the door from outside then left it open without saying " sorry" , put me at unease when showering and hubby stood outside door in case it happened again.
The fact they didn't acknowledge what they had done bothered me.

The site is lovely, the children were able to ride their bikes around the site without fear of being ran over, the park was ample for children aged between 9-12. The reception shop was very well priced, and we thoroughly enjoyed the warm baguettes we ordered for breakfast one morning. Great site for many local beaches. The shower areas were clean along with the washing up facilities.

Local attractions

Within half an hour or less you’ll reach most of the main highlights of south-west Cornwall as well as many beyond: the Eden Project, Flambards Theme Park, St Ives, Falmouth and the gardens of Glendurgan, Trebah and Trewithian are all close by, and the town of Helston, Cornwall’s second oldest (after Marazion), is three miles from the park. It’s a slightly longer trip to The Lost Gardens of Heligan at St Austell, but very worth it as one of Cornwall’s top tourist attractions.

Beautiful beaches abound all around: Praa Sands ten minutes’ drive away; Sennen Cove and its consistent waves for surf, and Porthleven, Pollurian and Mullion for fishing, more watersporting and rockpooling (essential in Cornwall, we say).

From Porthkerris Beach, towards Falmouth, you can learn to dive and look for the shore’s shipwrecks, while Kennack Sands and Kynance towards the Lizard are the ones to take the paintbox to. Newquay and the famous surf beaches of Cornwall’s north coast are within seven miles.

Godolphin, the seventeenth century house with sixteenth century gardens all managed these days by the National Trust, is within easy strolling or cycling distance and there are heaps of historical highlights in the area exploring Cornwall’s industrial and social heritage: buildings like Pendennis Castle and Victorian Lanhydrock; the museum and cathedral at Truro forty minutes away, and the remnants of the old tin mines and engine rooms near many coastal spots and cliffs.

Dig deeper into the history of Cornish mining at Poldark, the only complete underground mine still open to visitors, or go east to St Austell to explore the china clay industry at Wheal Martyn.

For walkies, take to the countryside around Lower Polladras using the park guides, or have some gorgeously scenic strolls along the South West Coast Path to Mullion, Marazion, Mousehole or Penzance.

On the north coast, try the eight mile hike from Portreath to Godrevy, stopping off for blackberry ice-cream or apple cake and clotted cream at the famed Hells Mouth café along the way.
