General

  • Spacious site between farm and woodland on the Lizard Peninsula
  • A couple of minutes' drive from Mullion and five miles from Helston
  • Two shower and toilet blocks with free hot water,

Mulling over a trip to Cornwall but want to avoid the hordes? Pitch up at peaceful Franchis Holiday Park just outside the village of Mullion on the lovely Lizard Peninsula, where generously-sized accommodation areas across four acres mean you’ll never know the peril of having a stranger snoring two feet away from your precious precious face. We make no promises about your other half...

Franchis Holiday Park is set between farm and woodland, with well-kept amenities including two shower and toilet blocks with free hot water, a free freezer for ice packs, a launderette usable for a small extra charge, and numerous taps all around to save a long walk in the morning to fill up the kettle (always a bonus).

For shops or eating out, Mullion is within a couple of minutes’ drive and the town of Helston is five miles away; tourist info is on site too if you want to head further afield.

Books are around to borrow too if you’ve forgotten your bedtime reading, but you’ll have to read by torchlight as lighting on the campsite is kept to a minimum for full appreciation of the night sky and the local wildlife. Reading by torchlight while bats and owls fly and hoot overhead? Now that’s also a bonus…

Superb location for exploring the Lizard Peninsula 21/07/2016

  • Non-electric grass tent pitch

  • Liked:

Spacious, clearly defined tent pitches within their own designated field, away from the caravans.
Most non-electric pitches were very reasonably flat and level and I found it to be a peaceful location, barely able to hear the sound of passing cars from the road.
Set in a great 'hub' location for exploring parts of the Lizard Peninsula (Mullion, Goonhilly Downs, Lizard Point, etc.).
Owner was very friendly and informative upon arrival and on hand for assistance throughout the days.
Site is just off the main road leading down to the Lizard from Helston (easy to find).
Showers were warm and there was no restriction on time or usage. Each cubicle also contains sufficient space to store and hang your clothes, which is rare, in my experience.
A blackboard outside the shop is updated daily with the weather forecast and local tide times.
Several water points available around the field.
Large chest freezer for ice packs (and washing machines) available in room filled with leaflets for local attractions and books that you can borrow and read during your stay.
I would happily stay here again and do intend to revisit this part of Cornwall, next year.

    Disliked:

During my visit the shop wasn't open and may only be available at peak times - however, Mullion is less than a ten-minute drive away and has many amenities with free parking.
There were two large bins for general rubbish but only a glass bin for recyclables.
A track leading to the holiday homes runs right alongside the tent field and non-electric pitches - but traffic is very infrequent.
From a walker's point of view, you'd be better off driving to a start point as there are no footpaths leading from the site or within a short distance along the busy road.

Local attractions

It’s Cornwall, so the area around Franchis Holiday Park is laden with beaches, coves, sightseeing, surfing and walking: just south of Mullion village lie the Predannack Downs with cliffs along to the picture-perfect Kynance Cove, and the South West Coast Path runs a couple of miles from the campsite.

The River Helford and its valleys are a few miles to the east; look out for Frenchman’s Creek, used as the setting for Daphne Du Maurier’s historical novel of the same name.

Comely villages are dotted all around this part of the west Cornwall coastline, including the old fishing village of Cadgwith and its 300 year old Cadgwith Cove Inn, dishing up lobster and seafood landed that day.

Mullion, closest to Franchis Holidays, is the biggest village in the Lizard and the town of Helston should be on the visit list for a taste trip to sample Spingo, the local brew.

A drive of 13 miles brings sightseers to the bigger settlements of Falmouth and Penzance, with countless coves, Cornish attractions and activities for land and sea: gardens, galleries, castles, theatres and museums are all here, with Land’s End and the legendary St Michael’s Mount close to hand.

Poldark, the only complete underground tin mine in Cornwall, is at Penzance for delvers into Cornish history, while the China Clay Country Park is along the coast at St Austell.
