  • Exclusive and luxury single yurt on a Cornish farm
  • Private cabin next door with shower and flushing toilet
  • A 15-minute walk from famed 13th-century Pandora Inn

Might you like being on your lovely ownsome and knowing no-one else is around? So you and/or partner can snore with impunity, be as noisy as you like (ahem), walk around as nature intended and with not a stitch more, or let the kids shriek as loudly as they want without incurring glares from other guests? Welcome to the lone, luxury and exclusive dwelling at Albion Farm Yurt, on a Cornish farm on the edge of Mylor near Falmouth.

The owners of this superbly solitary yurt have perched it as an environmentally-friendly alternative to a holiday cottage, in a field facing south west and with easy access to the local village (although fret not, the yurt is secluded enough that no-one will see you prancing around in your birthday suit). And it’s all surrounded by trees among a large grassy area and local wildlife, which means staying here is back to nature but with stacked with home comforts.

It’s all rather clever really too – the yurt is handmade on Bodmin Moor using a traditional Mongolian yurt design and coppiced wood, with woodburning stove and gas cooker inside. The sides can be peeled back to let the air in, and there’s a roof light too for yurt-based stargazing.

Unlike many yurt sites, campfires are allowed and positively encouraged here, and cooking and eating equipment is even provided for you (a fridge and freezer is in a building close to hand). You’ll also have your own cabin right next to the yurt, with a proper flushing toilet, a shower, basin, electric lighting and a towel rail. If you're part of a large group or a couple of families, the owners will happily allow a few extra tents alongside the yurt.

Albion Farm is 10 minutes’ walk from Mylor village, with the Lemon Arms pub, shops, butcher and fishmonger; the waterside 13th-century and rather superb Pandora Inn is a 15-minute walk from your pitch along a creekside path, and the harbour to gaze enviously at yachts is nicely handy too.

This holiday was exactly what we had hoped for - to get away from it all. Albion Farm Yurt offers a real back to nature experience with a hint of modern day life. The space is yours. The owners whilst available, totally honoured your privacy. The dog had an absolute ball living the outdoors life, and so did we. There are several beaches that cater for dogs but you do have to search them out a little as the main beaches excluded dogs at the time of year we stayed. Grebe Beach being by far the best (although they were all amazing), just through Bosveal. Such a beautiful walk down the road to the beach too!!! Nestled between National Trust Gardens.

Take earplugs for the morning dawn birdsong LOL. There is an amazing abundance of wildlife here :-)

Mostly disliked having to come home :-(

From London we find the M4 and M5 to be the fastest route. Come off the M5 at Junction 31 at Exeter and take the A30 via Okehampton, Bodmin, and then take the road to Truro. Bypass Truro and follow the A39 towards Falmouth.

At Perran-ar-Worthal, turn left (signed to Carclew). The turning is almost opposite the Norway Inn seen on your right. Take a left turn at the first T-Junction, and turn left again at the next crossroads approximately 200m further on.

After approximately 1 mile, continue straight ahead past a fork off to the left, towards Mylor Bridge for approximately 200m (now Bells Hill). We are the first visible property on the right-hand side. You will see the pink cottage called Little Albion and then Albion House, a slate-hung house with narrow vehicle entrance and round lawn.

Local attractions

Mylor is a very pretty spot with spectacular views (so don't forget the camera) – not too surprising for Cornwall really – and gorgeous coastline, beaches, walks along creeks, the South West Coast Path, acres of green gardens and piles of history are all close to hand. Both Falmouth and Truro are five miles away.

Surfers can head to the north coast for Newquay, Bude and the like, with the beaches on Cornwall’s south coast generally a bit quieter; Albion Farm Yurt is well placed for both.

From Mylor, catch a passenger ferry to Falmouth; you can get to the fishing village of St Mawes by ferry from here too. The King Harry Ferry has all-day discount tickets where you can park the car for free in Falmouth and hop off anywhere you like on the journey around Truro, Falmouth and the Roseland Peninsula (possibly not into the river).

If you’d rather hire your own sails, boat hire and a yacht sailing school are at Mylor Yacht Harbour, with crewing aboard racers and cruisers at Falmouth’s Royal Cornwall Yacht Club.

Cornwall is crammed with historic, National Trust and notable gardens: the three valleys of Glendurgan and the sub-tropical Trebah are both at Falmouth; Trelissick is near Truro on a peninsula of the River Fal, and Lamorran is at St Mawes. The Lost Gardens of Heligan, probably the most famous gardens in Cornwall and one of its most visited attractions, is at St Austell about 20 miles from Mylor.

Culture peeps will easily find museums, art and theatre hereabouts: St Ives and the Tate St Ives and the waterside Minack Theatre at Penzance are both within 40–50 minutes’ drive, and the Hall for Cornwall theatre is close by at Truro.

Or pootle around Falmouth’s Pendennis Castle, one of Henry Eight’s many calling cards around the south and south-west coast. There are regular events all year round including medieval jousts and family sleepovers, and it’s good for the budget-conscious too.

The National Maritime Museum Cornwall, nearby on Falmouth’s harbour, has around 140 craft of all types, covering over 150 years of local maritime history.

Must see
