General

  • Campsite with adjacent equestrian centre offering lessons and hacks
  • Lake on site with valley views
  • Peaceful family farm site with plenty of room for play

Why the long face? Because you didn't canter to Camelford for a Cornwall holiday surrounded by all things horse? Neigh problem: race to Lakefield Caravan Park to remedy.

A quiet farm park on the north Cornwall coast. Lakefield has its own British Horse School and Riding for the Disabled Association approved equestrian centre attached, with classes and rides for all ages and abilities from beginner to experienced. Your horse-mad little person can even trot along to a Saturday pony club or have a pony-owning experience day…

Other whinny-ing features on site are the stargazing – when it's dark here, it's really dark, points out the Lakeside team; the quiet secluded setting (no bars or clubs here) and the handy location: although it's secludedly set, Lakefield's on a B road so is an excellent base for galloping all over Cornwall.

Kids – and dogs – can roam with impunity around the big field for off-lead exercise (for dogs, not kids) and the big grassy area set aside for ball games, handily within eyeballing sight of most pitches. The whole site covers five acres, with lake and valley views on a 54-acre smallholding.

All pitches at Lakefield are grass and well-spaced, some with optional electric hook-up. The well-maintained and recently modernised amenities block has free hot showers, free hot water, a washing machine and a tumble dryer. Wifi is available on site and bread, eggs and milk are for sale at reception.

The medieval market town of Camelford is a mile away and has shops and a leisure centre with indoor pool.

Please note

Facilities/activities including equestrian lessons and hacks are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The staff was delightful, so friendly and helpful, even chopped some wood for us to use in our fire pit at night. The campsite is small but really well laid out and we were allowed to select our own pitch. The facilities were spotless and really nice to use. And the location is outstanding as well. Such a quite area, great for a good nights sleep.

Quiet, convenient location for Boscastle, etc.

    Disliked:

This is NOT suitable for large motorhomes (unless it's been very dry for a very long time).
No heating in toilet/shower block and freezing tiles. Horrible.
No shop, even though there is a tack shop.
    Signage for campers awful.

Despite booking 2 months in advance and giving all the dimensions of the motorhome, we had really not been catered for. I know that the weather can't be helped. The weeks of rain had turned the site into a mudbath and there are no backup hardstanding pitches. We got stuck in mud on the only tiny path/road through the site, with no way to turn round. The people were nice enough and a friendly chap towed us out, but the tiny bit of hardstanding next to the toilet block was totally insufficient. We ended up having to use the gateway to a field, which meant parking on a slope, not good for sleeping/cooking.
    Suggestions:
    - If you don't want to create some hardstanding pitches, at least use the plastic matting that is designed to stabilise grass (take a look at the Cobweb carpark in Boscastle)
    - Create a turning circle, so larger vehicles stand a chance and won't get bogged down, trying to turn round on the tiny road.
    - The shower/toilet block is horrible in wet/cold weather - no mats to stand on, no heating, we could see our breath in there. At least install some form of heating for colder weather (we did pay £85 for 5 nights after all)
    - You have a tack shop and a reception, so why not have a small stock of essentials (milk, butter, bread, beans, etc)?
    - Some signage would have stopped us passing reception, thinking it was just the equestrian bit.

    - If you do not wish to cater for larger motorhomes, then please don't encourage them.
(but thanks to the nice chap who towed us out of the quagmire)

From the manager...

Many thanks for your review . We have had unprecedented weather in the last 6 weeks with 2 periods of snow and very heavy rain and have made every effort to prepare the site for the beginning of the season . Easter has been very early and temperatures have been cooler than the average for this time of the year.
Reception does have a large sign on the door and if I was driving a large vehicle and going somewhere new if I was unsure I would have stopped and asked where I should go instead of sailing down onto the site without thinking about the weather . We helped you to get out and provided you with the best provision we could to which you seemed happy. If you had been unhappy and wanted to find an alternative if you had said we would have given you a full refund.
With reference to heating in the toilet block very few sites provide this especially for the cost per night here . We are one of the cheapest sites in this area and are usually praised of the cleanliness of our facilities and have never had anyone expect central heating in the toilet block before.
I am to be honest surprised that with a large motor home you chose to book a grass electric pitch in early April with the weather as it has been. At no point do we say we have hardstandings . We are sorry you didn’t enjoy your stay.

Directions

Lakefield Caravan Park is 1 mile north of Camelford on the B3266.

From Exeter, follow the A30 towards Launceston. Travel for a short distance past Launceston and exit at the Kennards House Junction for the A395 (towards Camelford). Continue on the A395 for about 10 miles until you come to a T-junction joining the A39. Turn left at the T-junction towards Camelford. Travel for approximately 2 miles and turn right (before Camelford) on to the B3314 via Slaughterbridge. At the next set of crossroads turn left onto the B3266. Lakefield is situated after 200 yards on your right.

To find Lakefield from the south-west, take the A30 towards Wadebridge, and at Wadebridge take the A39 towards Camelford. Follow this road for about 10 miles until you reach the outskirts of Camelford and a BP garage on your right. Take the first left after the petrol station towards Boscastle, the B3266. Follow this road for 1.5 miles, and Lakefield is situated on your left-hand side.

Local attractions

Ramble over moors or surf over waves from Lakefield Caravan Park: both Bodmin Moor and the sandy beaches of north Cornwall are close by.

At Bodmin, take a walk around the tors Rough Tor and Brown Willy, Cornwall's two highest points among its best known landmarks; at the coast, the strong waves of nearby Trebarwith Strand are eminently suitable for surfing – and the 800 metre-long sands a top pick for sunbathing.

On land, the Camel Trail 11 miles away is a good ride for families and has cycle hire in several spots. Popular Cornish day trips are within driving distance at Boscastle (five miles), Port Isaac (ten miles) and Padstow (19 miles).

This is legendary country too, with the castle and village of King Arthur's Tintagel six miles along the coast now one of the most visited attractions in the land.

It gets quite madly busy at Tintagel in summer, so for a less crowded experience, visit the Arthurian Centre at Slaughterbridge a mile and a half from the campsite and just outside the medieval market town of Camelford.

For those who fancy fishing, Crowdy Reservoir a couple of miles from Lakefield has free coarse fishing for Environment Agency rod licence holders from March to October.

Must see

  • Tintagel Castle (3.9 miles)
  • Rock Beach (12.1 miles)
  • Cornwall's Crealy Great Adventure Park (14.7 miles)

National Trust

  • Tintagel Old Post Office (3.3 miles)
  • Lawrence House (14.2 miles)
