General

  • Riverside camping near Bude
  • Woodland and wildlife walks, hammocks and free wifi and firepit use
  • Newly refurbished and heated shower block; disabled shower and loo

‘Campfires are allowed by the riverside,’ say the owners of Woodview Campsite near Bude in Cornwall, which is symbolic of such splendid pitching we’ll have to say it again. Campfires allowed. By a riverside. In Cornwall. Oh, and the firepits are free to use, and by the river there are also hammocks. And swings. Yes we certainly wood.

Woodview Campsite is in north Cornwall on the Cornwall/Devon border (nifty for both Dartmoor and Exmoor National Park; we also wood) and six or seven miles from Sandymouth, Crooklets and the other beaches at Bude.

We’ll get to all the many many activities and things to see in the Local attractions section, but if you’re all of a flutter trying to decide what to do, just have a word with the Woodview team, a local family who knows the ins and outs and the upside downs of all to see and do in Cornwall. And there’s free wifi on site if you want to have a look at the Local attractions again or nearby walking routes, likely bike rides or pubs.

On site, all is topping: Woodview is an elevated position and sheltered by trees (clue in the name there), with pitches coming in hardstanding or grass with a choice of electric hook-up. Wander south for the stream on the edge of the campsite that flows into the River Tamar, or branch out into the beech woodland a short stroll away for wildlife walks among the wildflowers.

Facilities – all free – include a games room with table tennis, air hockey, Freeview TV, indoor football and snooker, and a newly refurbished shower and loo block with underfloor heating, baby changing and a disabled shower and loo. Laundry facilities are also available.

If you’re not using one of the seven riverside firepits, barbecues can be used (sensibly please) in the main pitching area, with a side helping of views towards Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor. We wood.

Excellent facilities, spacious pitches, lovely people and a peaceful stay! Would highly recommend this site as it is the best i have stayed at and will certainly be going back for another stay! Although we didn't take our dogs with us this time it is a great location for scenic dog walks too.

Loved the little area to have a fire down by the stream. Shower facilities were clean and just what we needed. Owners/staff were very kind and helpful. Although we didn't need it was good to see a campsite providing blocks to put your BBQ on.

Some of the games, (hockey sticks in particular) need replacing as they are very used! Drainage is quite poor in places

From the manager...

Hi glad you enjoyed your stay, just to let you know we have already ordered a new set of hockey sticks to replace the old,all equipment in the games room is supplied free of charge, they were well used and gave a lot of fun. We are looking at a few wet spots that showed up after such a wet summer for improvement, which will be carried out now its end of season.
Thanks for your comments.

This site is well designed, the pitches are laid out for both caravan and tents and are relatively flat. Its a failey small site and the shower and toilets are very clean. There is also facilities for washing wetsuits. There is a wooded area at the bottom end of the site where you can have a small fire. There is a games room for the kids which has pool, badminton, table tennis, basket ball and football. The site is located in the Devon countryside about two and a half miles from the A39 north of Bude, which can be challenging for people who are not used to driving on single track roads. Do not rely on google maps as you can be sent on a magical mystery tour, which if you are towing anything will be very challenging indeed.
We stayed in the last week of August and we found the site peacefull, but the site does get very busy and seems popular with surfers. Its about half an hour to forty five minutes from Bude depending on traffic and Bidford is about an hour from the site.

    Disliked:

There is a shop on site but is very limited and expensive. The wifi is limited.

The family showers are a great addition to the site, plenty of space for wife and kids to share.
We visited the play barn a few times, my girls loved it. Plenty to do and keep them occupied during the bad weather.
Cosy fire pits and seating by the stream was lovely. Nice BBQ had there, with toasted marshmallows for afters.

    Disliked:

The site was cramped, certainly up the top end. Basic camping H&S not followed as there was not enough space between tents.

Nowhere to park car. I was asked to move mine to reception area, and once it was there I struggled to get it back near my pitch for packing up day.

They'd had really bad weather, and it showed. Poor drainage led to really soft pitches and even after a couple of days sunshine, it was still like walking on a mattress.

Wifi was intermittent but we expected that to be the case. It wasn't the wifi signal, but a lack of internet once we connected. Not a big deal really.

Having just been to another campsite immediately after, I must say the difference is amazing in the owners. Sorry to say that we didn't feel welcomed here, personalities were next to extinct, even a happy "good morning" seemed too much. We asked if our dog was allowed in the play barn and was met with rudeness and wording which was directed at us as if we had already been in prior to asking. That isn't the case at all. I will say that the younger staff members were fine though tbh.

It was quite a drive to get to from the roads, and due to weather my truck now contains quite a bit of Cornwall 😂

From the manager...

Thank you for your feedback, I'm glad you enjoyed the play barn and fire pits.
I'm sorry you thought it was cramped . H&S rules are observed there are 2 m gaps between tents and 3 m passage ways.
We have found problems this year with people booking a standard pitch and putting an XL tent on it, we have large and XL pitches available to book.
We ask that dogs do not go into the games room as there are small children playing on the floor.
There was an extended period of wet weather and despite the miles of land drains under the site the pitches did become soft.
They dried out quickly after a few sunny days.
We are small campsite and provide parking in several different places within the site. There is pressure on parking when people bring 2 or 3 cars.
We try and speak to as many campers as possible to wish them "good morning " and commiserate about the weather!
You will see many reviews saying how friendly and helpful we are

We are about 5 minutes from the A39, the roads were muddy after all the rain .

I'm glad the younger family members met with your approval.

    Disliked:

Really uneven pitch, not enough toilets for the amount of people, non existent wifi and had to drive miles through narrow lanes and a farm to get to anything.

From the manager...

Glad you enjoyed your stay, after 3 weeks rain the pitches can get a bit uneven, these will be reseeded and evened out after such bad weather There are 8 toilets 9 showers. The advantage with being a mile off the main road is that the site is very peaceful and safe for children.Wifi is checked its working each morning.

Great facilities, lots of little extras I was not expecting, like the free use of a freezer and fridge for coolers and fresh food. Clean and friendly staff, excellent location, perfect for families old and young

    Disliked:

There was a prevailing smell of drainage but that was really only noticeable when windy. It did not upset our stay though. Although wifi was available we could not log on at anytime for the duration of our stay.

From the manager...

Hi glad you enjoyed your stay, sorry about the farm smells sometime the dairy farms have to spread their slurry when the fields dry up after silage making. Normal country practice. I check Wi-Fi every morning to make sure its working.

Directions

Coming from Bude:
We are just off the A39 between Bude and Bideford. Follow the A39 to Bideford and after going through Kikhampton for a mile on the Bideford side, turn right for Bradworthy then left at the T-junction. You should see Woodview Campsite signs. Follow these until you come to a crossway in the woods. There is another sign here for Woodview Campsite - turn left and we are after 100m on the right.

Coming from Bideford:
Follow the A39 to Bude for 10 miles. Just after the Cornwall/Devon border sign, take the first left turning by a bungalow on the road edge. Keep straight on, following Woodview Campsite signs for 2.5 miles. If you miss this turning take the next left off the A39.

Local attractions

Within 20 minutes of Woodview Campsite, holidaymakers of all flavours will find beaut beaches, old seaside villages, family days out, coastal walks, sporty days and King Arthur legends at nearby Tintagel.

On days when not cooking over a campsite firepit or barbecue – because even with riverside firepits available one should sample quite a bit of Cornwall and Devon produce – pubs serving food and many tiptop restaurants are close by in the area of Bude, Hartland and Bideford (hang around in summer for carnivals and family events).

Bude’s three beaches, Sandymouth, Summerleaze and Crooklets, are popular with families and those dipping into watersports; surf schools and surf gear hire shops are aplenty on this part of coast.

Tamar Lake is also nearby to try sailing, fishing and canoeing, and the Bude Tourist Information & Canal Visitor Centre has info on navigating Bude Canal by kayak or rowing boat.

On land, Bude is on the National Cycle Network NCN3 linking to the Camel Trail; both have gentle rides suitable for families. The South West Coast Path can be picked up at Bude tourist information centre and covers superbly scenic walks from Bude to Boscastle, Marsland Mouth and Crackington Haven.

Also within 20 minutes, land fans have tenpin bowling and six levels of play at Harlequinns Leisure, and to rock climbing, tennis, squash, horse riding and golf: ask the Woodview team for their recommendations.

To the south, Tintagel and its castle are among the most visited places in Britain: stop at Boscastle on the way for one of our fave UK museums the Museum of Witchcraft, and carry on down the coast to Newquay for Newquay Zoo or a day at the Crealy Great Adventure Park in Wadebridge.

Cobbled Clovelly is to the north: clop around here for the day to see the town’s renowned steep street and have an astronomical day out at The Milky Way Adventure Park.

Bodmin Moor, Exmoor and Dartmoor are all within an hour’s drive, and an abundance of other family days out are easy to get to from Woodview, such as the Eden Project at St Austell, Launceston’s Tamar Otter Sanctuary and Trethorne Leisure Park, and famed The Big Sheep at Abbotsham.
