General

  • Riverside camping near Bude
  • Woodland and wildlife walks, hammocks and free wifi and firepit use
  • Newly refurbished and heated shower block; disabled shower and loo

‘Campfires are allowed by the riverside,’ say the owners of Woodview Campsite near Bude in Cornwall, which is symbolic of such splendid pitching we’ll have to say it again. Campfires allowed. By a riverside. In Cornwall. Oh, and the firepits are free to use, and by the river there are also hammocks. And swings. Yes we certainly wood.

Woodview Campsite is in north Cornwall on the Cornwall/Devon border (nifty for both Dartmoor and Exmoor National Park; we also wood) and six or seven miles from Sandymouth, Crooklets and the other beaches at Bude.

We’ll get to all the many many activities and things to see in the Local attractions section, but if you’re all of a flutter trying to decide what to do, just have a word with the Woodview team, a local family who knows the ins and outs and the upside downs of all to see and do in Cornwall. And there’s free wifi on site if you want to have a look at the Local attractions again or nearby walking routes, likely bike rides or pubs.

On site, all is topping: Woodview is an elevated position and sheltered by trees (clue in the name there), with pitches coming in hardstanding or grass with a choice of electric hook-up. Wander south for the stream on the edge of the campsite that flows into the River Tamar, or branch out into the beech woodland a short stroll away for wildlife walks among the wildflowers.

Facilities – all free – include a games room with table tennis, air hockey, Freeview TV, indoor football and snooker, and a newly refurbished shower and loo block with underfloor heating, baby changing and a disabled shower and loo. Laundry facilities are also available.

If you’re not using one of the seven riverside firepits, barbecues can be used (sensibly please) in the main pitching area, with a side helping of views towards Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor. We wood.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

The cleanliness of the site. Very well looked after. My children both loved the indoor playroom and the fact that the site was so small and private meant they had freedom which was great for all of us! The hammocks and the firepits were also a great bonus. The owner was very welcoming and gave us a handy map with local amenities and attractions. The campsite is well located and there are lots of lovely places to visit within an hour's drive.

    Disliked:

We were in the only static on the site and it had everything we needed in it but it could have done with a bit of a deep clean. I realise it was a pet friendly van but there was quite a bit of mould on the curtains and around the seals. I had to 'febreze' it a couple of times! This is a really small complaint though and it didn't detract from the mostly good points. Wifi was non existent but we were on holiday so didn't miss it much.

We had to pitch up our awning on a slope we asked if we could move opposite sides like some1 had already done as there wasn't a slope there and got told no it was by special request so we said ok and pitched up. 2 days into the stay people beside us moved to the opposite side we asked them how they were aloud to as we were told we wasn't they said they had complained along with the other people that we were told was moved as special request so the owner told us. There was my caravan with me and my partner and 3 children and my elderly nan and Grandad in there caravan after a day or two with the rain when you entered there awning it was very muddy and my children fell over numours of times and to top it of my elderly nan did to. I didn't go and complain as I had spoken to many of people on the site who said the owners were very rude and had no compassion they just said it's Cornwall there are hills and rain what do you expect which is correct but we on a slope so all the water was running down into our awnings. But if could have pitched up our caravan where we asked to do so in the first place then there wouldn't have been a problem. There shouldn't be 1 rule for 1 and for the other. We have been camping for many years now and have never come across rude owners. I would deffentily not recommend this site and a lot of people I spoke to on site said they would not stay again. Overall our holiday was great just a shame this site let us down.

Wood view campsite is in a perfect location for Bude and the surrounding area and very suitable for families and young children . Great facilities and clean as well as play room to keep kid occupied and fire pits which were a great idea although we we unable to access on this trip due to the weather.
Owners were very helpful and were able to give good local knowledge about local convenience, attractions and most importantly public houses. Owners also sell some local produce and Logs (for the fire pits) from the campsite which was a lovely touch.
The camping pitch was available at the stated time and had concrete standings between pitches which allowed easy access for vehicles and foot traffic especially in wet weather conditions.
There was access to WiFi good if you like or need to keep connected.
This was are first family camping trip and the experience has left us open to return.

Pitches to close together. children's play park needs upgrading and more facilities need to be added like extra tumble dryer more showers and toilets are needed. it was a bit to off the beaten track for us

From the manager...

Thanks for your feed back.
We are a small family run campsite, and already have twice as many showers and toilets as recommended by camping and caravan organisations.
There are 2 double family showers, a disabled /family room and 4 other individual showers.
The pitches have a space with a fire break and a separate hard standing space for vehicles.
BY Play park I'm assuming you mean the large indoor games room where children are meant to be supervised by a responsible adult .
All the equipment is provided free of charge for guests to enjoy.
The sturdy John Deere ride on tractor (for toddlers) was new this year, after only 4 weeks it is already broken.
There are 3 pool tables - 1 was new last year -already damaged.
We regularly have to replace racquets and cues which are broken due to misuse.
Pool balls, connect 4 discs, and air hockey components are picked up off the floor several times a day.
We expect to replace the ping pong balls and shuttle cocks and do so almost daily.
Only this morning a brand new Wilson badminton racquet was picked up with the head completely broken off- this does not happen in normal play.
In normal weather conditions the laundry facilities have proved adequate this year has been exceptionally wet!
In spite of your negative comments you still asked to stay an extra day .
We will strive to continue to provide these good quality indoor facilities free of charge

From the manager...

Hi glad you enjoyed your stay, thought you might of come back to stay in our new wood cabins, so to continue your coastal walk. Sorry to hear you experienced a noisy camper . For the 50 pitches we have 9 showers 8 toilets which is more than double recommended for this size camp site. The family showers room have been a big hit this summer.

Directions

Coming from Bude:
We are just off the A39 between Bude and Bideford. Follow the A39 to Bideford and after going through Kikhampton for a mile on the Bideford side, turn right for Bradworthy then left at the T-junction. You should see Woodview Campsite signs. Follow these until you come to a crossway in the woods. There is another sign here for Woodview Campsite - turn left and we are after 100m on the right.

Coming from Bideford:
Follow the A39 to Bude for 10 miles. Just after the Cornwall/Devon border sign, take the first left turning by a bungalow on the road edge. Keep straight on, following Woodview Campsite signs for 2.5 miles. If you miss this turning take the next left off the A39.

Local attractions

Within 20 minutes of Woodview Campsite, holidaymakers of all flavours will find beaut beaches, old seaside villages, family days out, coastal walks, sporty days and King Arthur legends at nearby Tintagel.

On days when not cooking over a campsite firepit or barbecue – because even with riverside firepits available one should sample quite a bit of Cornwall and Devon produce – pubs serving food and many tiptop restaurants are close by in the area of Bude, Hartland and Bideford (hang around in summer for carnivals and family events).

Bude’s three beaches, Sandymouth, Summerleaze and Crooklets, are popular with families and those dipping into watersports; surf schools and surf gear hire shops are aplenty on this part of coast.

Tamar Lake is also nearby to try sailing, fishing and canoeing, and the Bude Tourist Information & Canal Visitor Centre has info on navigating Bude Canal by kayak or rowing boat.

On land, Bude is on the National Cycle Network NCN3 linking to the Camel Trail; both have gentle rides suitable for families. The South West Coast Path can be picked up at Bude tourist information centre and covers superbly scenic walks from Bude to Boscastle, Marsland Mouth and Crackington Haven.

Also within 20 minutes, land fans have tenpin bowling and six levels of play at Harlequinns Leisure, and to rock climbing, tennis, squash, horse riding and golf: ask the Woodview team for their recommendations.

To the south, Tintagel and its castle are among the most visited places in Britain: stop at Boscastle on the way for one of our fave UK museums the Museum of Witchcraft, and carry on down the coast to Newquay for Newquay Zoo or a day at the Crealy Great Adventure Park in Wadebridge.

Cobbled Clovelly is to the north: clop around here for the day to see the town’s renowned steep street and have an astronomical day out at The Milky Way Adventure Park.

Bodmin Moor, Exmoor and Dartmoor are all within an hour’s drive, and an abundance of other family days out are easy to get to from Woodview, such as the Eden Project at St Austell, Launceston’s Tamar Otter Sanctuary and Trethorne Leisure Park, and famed The Big Sheep at Abbotsham.
