General

  • Family park a mile from Widemouth Bay
  • A 10--minute drive from Bude
  • Facilities/entertainment of two sister parks included in price

Families, kids, beach buffs and even the family dog might whoop about the location and facilities of Widemouth Fields in Cornwall…. it's a firmly family- and dog-friendly park, surrounded by Cornish countryside views, and a mere mile from the surf at Widemouth Bay.

Dogs stay for free here – a capacious eight-acre field is next door to the site for canine exercising – while the kids can get nicely tuckered out in the adventure playground and adjacent field for football or other ball game antics.

The amenities are free and up to date: showers, toliets and a family bathroom are all here, along with – a nice touch – chemical disposal and washing-up area both set indoors.

The park also has a cute wooden bar at reception, along with armfuls of tourist information, a coin-operated launderette, and a shop selling camping supplies, gas, groceries, games, confectionery and ice-cream.

Off site, guests are welcome to use the club and entertainment facilities of Widemouth Fields's two sister parks at no extra charge: Bude Holiday Resort a 15-minute drive away and Newquay View Resort about an hour away for a day out further afield.

Widemouth Fields has wifi throughout the site for a small additional fee.

  • Camping pod (no pets, superior)
  • Recommend to friends   Visit again
  • Liked:

The superior camping pod was great. You had your own facilities including kitchen and bathroom and outside was a great decking and BBQ area. The pods were not too close together which also mean that you were able to have privacy.

    Disliked:

The location was close to Widemouth Bay and a short drive to Bude but you weren't able to walk anywhere due to the road.

    Getting off the site

    Disliked:

On arrival pack saying where plot was and told where toilet block. No idea where dog walking area was. Still not sure when I left either. Site was a mud bath. Not just muddy but a sinking in the ground mud coming though awning ground sheet. Men's facilities area not cleaned everyday. Sand around one basin area for two days and still there when we left. Toothpaste residue in one sunk one morning and still there the next day. I know it was heavyily raining for the week but some warning of bad drainage on the grass area would have been good. I and my father who is in his 70s were covered in mud. I have had to throw an £80 pair of asic trainers away which were ruined on the first day putting up the awning. My feet were brown from the mud.
For what was a luxury pitch i was expecting a level pitch.
The hose fell out of the hair dryer. I had to screw it back in.
The shower and toilet block was cold.
Worst was the smell coming up out of the drain where the stand pipe is. Couldn't open caravan windows due to the stench.
Finally due to storms we notice the caravan awning on the next plot to us was open and no one there and the awning sagging. We informed the camp site. On Our final evening the caravan owners arrived who told us they pitched their caravan their permanently. But although we told the site, they didn't phone these owners to come and check their property.

Overall, this site is ok. 26/08/2017

  • Electric hardstanding touring pitch
  • Recommend to friends   Visit again
  • Liked:

Gravel pitch, but could have done with a weeding - too much grass in it gave an untidy look. There were a lot of weeds on some gravel pitches which gave the appearance of lack of use, or lack of maintenance. Showers worked fine, as did the hook up. The barrier always worked and was available 24/7.

    Disliked:

The shower floors were often dirty in the morning. This was not surprising due to a wet field, but the floors should be cleaned more frequently. Also there was no sign requesting users to mop the floor after use, as is the case at other sites. A mop and bucket were provided, and I used it.

Directions

Via north Devon:
Exit the M5 at Junction 27 and follow the A361 to the A39, signposted Bideford/Bude. Stay on the A39 until approximately 4 miles past Stratton, and look for our sign on the left.

Shortest route:
Exit the M5 at Junction 31 and join the A30, exiting at the A386, signposted Bude. Turn left onto the A3079 to Holsworthy, then turn right on the A3072 to Bude. Turn right on the A39 and go along for 4 miles; look for our sign on the left.

Slightly longer but with wider roads:
Exit the M5 at Junction 31 on to the A30, and travel for approximately 5 miles past Launceston, ignoring all previous signs for Bude. Turn on to the A395 for north Cornwall. Follow the road to Hallworthy and take the second turn on the right, signposted Bude. Reach the A39 and turn right, and travel 12 miles towards Bude. Go past the Widemouth Bay sign on your left; look for our sign directing you on the right.

Local attractions

Take your pick and off you go: Cornwall has something for all flavours including world-class beaches, spectacular surf, gorgeous golf courses, wildlife-crammed nature reserves, theme parks, gardens, and old old legends to delve into.

Pick a seaside town per day to investigate its beaches, coves, restaurants and its section of the South West Coast Path: Bude, Boscastle (Witchcraft Museum), Tintagel (King Arthur and castle) and Clovelly in Devon (famous and cameraworthy) are all easily accessible from Widemouth Fields, or you could drive a little further to Port Isaac and Padstow, both on the way to Newquay.

At Bude, four days might be needed, one for each of its beaches – Summerleaze, Sandymouth, Crackington Haven and Crooklets; all smashing – and there's a bude, sorry, good, bit to do here for kids too, including an indoor pool with flume, bowling, a six-storey indoor play centre, and an outdoor activities centre for them to try kayaking or boogie boarding.

Away from the seaside towns, the Crealy Great Adventure Park at Tredinnick between Newquay and Wadebridge is one of Cornwall's best-known family attractions, as is the mighty Eden Project to the south-east just outside St Austell.

In Devon, Exmoor Zoo should prove a hit with any menagerie, and RHS Rosemoor Gardens at Great Torrington is blooming with things to see and do.

Must see

  • Tintagel Castle (12.6 miles)
  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (20.6 miles)
  • Rock Beach (23.5 miles)

National Trust

  • Lawrence House (12.5 miles)
  • Tintagel Old Post Office (12.6 miles)
