General

  • Lakeside site with sandy beach
  • Kayaking, canoeing, fishing, sailing, cycling and more all available
  • Short drive to the surfing beaches of Bude and Widemouth

There’s nothing to mar your enjoyment of the panoramic vista at this site near the pleasant seaside resort of Bude...the pitches face out on the larger of the two lakes on site, Upper Tamar, and its sandy beach. And anglers will no doubt have some fishy tales to tell after a day out netting some of the bream, roach, rudd and huge carp stashed in the two lakes for a small daily rate...

Make the most of the views using foot, cycle, wind or paddle power, or wander around the large pathway circling Upper Tamar Lake, designed for wheelchair and pushchair use and suitable for walking and cycling. The trails continue into the woods and countryside beyond for those who are feeling energetic, or there are easier walks and good picnic spots to be found around Lower Tamar, which is a haven for wild birds (both lakes have a hide).

Or one could get stuck into watery sports right on site: pedalos, Canadian canoes and dinghies are available for hire at a small charge, as well as windsurfers and surf skis - although you can also bring your own boats and equipment too. Taster sessions, lessons and activity programmes for adults and kids run in the holiday season and most weekends from April to September at the watersports centre.

Tamar Lakes Campsite has communal style showers, a washing-up area, a chemical disposal point and recycling facilities. More leisurely, you'll also find a new playground, a tearoom selling souvenirs, and a café serving up light meals, cream teas and some rather moreish Cornish ice cream.

Please note

Facilities/activities including fishing, launching your own watersports/sailing equipment, watersports taster sessions are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Some activities on site are only available during some weekends and peak dates and at additional charge, please see the Terms and Conditions under the 'Policies' tab for more information.

Please note that guests should bring their own leads for electric hook-up on pitches.

The stay was amazing and the views were exceptional. The facilities were well kept & fit our purposes. The location was good and fit our demands perfectly, Kilkhampton being just a walk away meant that it was easy to access the town of Bude. The value for money was amazing & the owners of the site were extremely friendly whilst arranging the trip.

The scenery around the campsite was absolutely beautiful. The pod that we stayed in was clean and had more than we expected. The beds were comfortable and the added bonus of a washing up area with table and chairs was greatly appreciated. The staff member that we met - a lady working in the cafe, was more than happy to help us.

    Disliked:

The communal showers were very ‘communal’ with only one shower curtain. There were no staff around on arrival, despite the fact we arrived within opening hours. The kind lady in the cafe helped us around.

Watersports, lake, location, play park, cafe onsite.

    Disliked:

Unclear signage for the camping reception. FYI it's the watersports building. Most of the site is unlevel. Only two electric hook ups. Not family friendly shower blocks. Most of the men's showers are communal. Needs a camp site dedicated shower block.

Very friendly and competent staff nothing was to much trouble. Exceeding well maintained and clean site, toilet and showers were very functional and clean . Very good water sports facilities. Views are excellent also lots of wildlife to see. Will recommend to all my friend. Thank you

    Disliked:

Pitch was not level. Needs some more hardstanding for vehicle parking . Maybe rough gravel
"road " way to pitches as rain makes the pitches hard to reach.

    Sports facilities (but didn't use)

    Disliked:

Most of the pitches were on a slope, which wasn't clear to us when we booked. We requested a level pitch due to having young kids at the time of booking, but that request wasn't acknowledged or replied to by the site managers before we arrived.

The first night, both kids were consistently awoken by sliding down the tent.

In the morning we had showers - the pressure switch for each shower (I tested them all in the gents') lasted around 3 seconds, making it impossible to have a reasonable shower, especially with the kids. We didn't expect Ritz-type facilities, but I've never experienced showers like that at any site I've stayed.

We complained about the pitch slope but the manager said we should have been aware of it from reviews at pitchup.com. I would have preferred the site description to state the pitch was sloping, rather than having to go through all the reviews. In fairness, the manager suggested she may have a level pitch available at a sister site, but spending a few hours taking down the gear and setting it back up after almost no sleep didn't appeal.

It made us wonder why that wasn't offered after we'd booked, due to our request for a level pitch.

As a result, we packed up and left our days early. For us, a complete waste of time and money.

    Nice view

    Disliked:

Pitches were very unlevel. We booked 10 days but left after 6 due to having an accident in the tent with the ground being so dangerous. Showers were constantly dirty and mouldy.

Local attractions

Attractive Bude has lots to offer and is surrounded by ancient villages such as Poughill and Kilkhampton. North of this area is the wild and beautiful Hartland Peninsula, where you can find the precariously perched, carfree cobbled streets of Clovelly.

To the south, a tour of Tintagel Castle followed by a visit to the pretty fishing village of Boscastle would make a good day out. A short trip inland brings you to Launceston, where you can take a nostalgic journey on the steam railway.

Must see
