General

  • Family park near Bude with first-rate facilities and beach views
  • Less than a mile from Sandymouth
  • Indoor pool, crazy golf, sports, kids' club, café and bar

Everybody say, ‘Aaaaaaarrrrrrrr!”. There are five decks of fun aboard the enormous Black Pearl play ship at Sandymouth Holiday Park near Bude, and regular pirate fancy dress parties to boot...

Your little treasures won’t need to hunt for fun things to do at this five-star park - the swashbuckling facilities include a great indoor family pool, a hearty helping of sporting activities, crazy golf, kids’ clubs starring Charlie Bear, and more.

The level hardstanding pitches for tourers look out over the stunning sands of Bude and Sandymouth, and there are grassy pitches for tents with electric hook-ups in the spacious camping meadow. Everything’s shipshape, with free showers, a launderette and mini supermarket on site.

The calm and welcoming atmosphere will ensure that grizzled old sea dogs can unwind too, perhaps with a spot of fishing. Grub and grog are sorted via the comfy café and smart Ocean Bar, and we’ll wager that the comedians, musicians and DJs that take over the Clubroom of an evening will have you shaking your pirate booty and yo ho ho-ing the night away...

Had a great 4 nights camping at Sandymouth Bay over the August bank holiday. We were told that we could pitch up anywhere in the field, as long its wasn't a prebooked electrical outlet spot, and that we could take up as much room as we wanted and there was loads of space to pick where we wanted to pitch.

the facilities were good, that we saw of them - we were out with our son nearly all of the time, but the club house, restaurant were fine when we used it, we didn't use the gym or pool but they looked very good.

the kiddies play area was great and kept our young one very entertained and I was very happy that there wasn't a huge area full of arcade machines as my son is drawn to this like a moth to a flame.

I would very much like to return next year, but im led to believe that the camping field is going to be used for more static caravans, which is a shame. I would definitely recommend Sandymouth.

We didn't use the WiFi so cant comment on it

    Disliked:

The toilet block could benefit from a sprucing up, some shower curtains and a bit of paint wouldn't have gone amiss but as they wont be taking tents next year I can fully understand why they have been left to let go a little.

If they do decide to keep tents some additional washing up sinks wouldn't go amiss either, as there is only 3.

I was also a little concerned about the exit road from the tents / caravans which ran between the club house and the kiddies play area. there were stop signs and a pedestrian crossing but kids are kids and when they get over excited and run about they don't tend to be on the look out for cars.

The swimming pool was brilliant as was the kids park and having amusements on site.
The view over the sea was magical and the large pitch space made it feel like you were on holiday alone.

    Disliked:

The toilets were often unclean in the mornings but that was not the fault of the site, they cleaned it very often, it was the others customers who thought it was ok to cause mess. The ground on the tent pitches was very uneven so we could not pitch up perfectly but thats just a minor issue.

Toilet and shower block needs cleaning more often. Something more specifically for toddlers would benefit. WiFi not accessible even with the password.

Great stay, have been here before in a tent and decided to return with a group in touring caravans. Great pool, club house with entertainment, close to beautiful Sandymouth Beach owned by the National Trust. Lovely site and not bothered by staff checking pitches each day as in some sites. Unfortunately, they are closing for refurbishment and will not be accepting touring vans next year when they re-open, will be a full static site. Shame as it's a perfect site for our group with young and older children. Will have to look elsewhere.

Directions

From the west
Find the A39 (Atlantic Highway) and travel north towards Bude. Do not take the turning to Bude, but continue along the A39 for approximately three to four miles. As Kilkhampton is approached turn left to Sandymouth. Continue along this road until you have passed through the village of Stibb. Sandymouth Holiday Park is situated on the left-hand side of the road and is signposted.

From the east
Via the M5, exit at Junction 27 and travel on the A361/A39 (Atlantic Highway) towards Bideford and Bude. Eight miles before Bude you will pass through the village of Kilkhampton. When you have exited the village take the next right turn signposted Stibb. Follow this road to the village of Stibb. After passing through Stibb take the next left, continue for a short while and you will find Sandymouth Holiday Park on your left.

From the east via Exeter/Okehampton
From Exeter follow the A30 towards Bodmin. After passing the Okehampton exit take the next exit signposted to Bude and follow through to Holsworthy. Approximately 5.2 miles from Holsworthy you will reach Red Post Cross (a staggered crossroads). Turn right here and follow the signs to Kilkhampton. At Kilkhampton you will reach a T-junction; turn left. Follow through the village of Kilkhampton and shortly after take the right turn at Penstowe Holiday Park, signposted Stibb. Follow this road through the village of Stibb and take the next left; continue for a short while and you will find Sandymouth Holiday Park on your left.

Local attractions

The Devon and Cornwall beaches around Sandymouth Holiday Park will blow you away. Under a mile away, down a twisty-turny country lane, is Sandymouth itself, a great swathe of golden sand that stretches for three miles at low tide, with plenty of rockpools to keep the little ones amused and a National Trust café - easy to see why this one has won plaudits from the press as one of the region’s top beaches.

Then there’s beautiful Bude, where you’ll find the beach huts, fishing boats and unique open air seawater pool of Summerleaze Beach, great for inflatables fun (the tides here mean it’s not safe to use them in the open sea). You can walk across the sand to Summerleaze from Sandymouth Bay, but do be careful to check the times of the tides first, so you don’t get stranded by the rising water.

Next door to Summerleaze is Crooklets Beach, which is a favourite with families and surfers alike for its perfect sand and surf. For added peace of mind, all of the above beaches have lifeguards on duty from May to September.

If you need some towntime, Bude itself is charming and friendly, offering interesting local shops, superb restaurants and traditional treats. Barnstaple and Bideford are good for shopping, or you can head to the bigger cities of Plymouth and Exeter, for museums, aquariums, cathedrals and plenty of other fodder for culture vultures.

The area is stuffed with tourist attractions, too: animal parks starring everything from owls to otters, fun family leisure parks with rides and rollers galore, glorious gardens, cutely cobbled fishing villages, castles, dinosaurs - no chance of getting bored around these parts...
