  • Secluded and spacious site in a spectacular countryside setting
  • Four miles from Widemouth Bay and 20 minutes’ drive from Bude beach
  • Bodyboards and kids' toys available to borrow
Tucked away in the Cornish countryside four miles from Widemouth Bay, Bakesdown Farm is a peaceful place for stays of the old-school sort. There’s no noisy bar or evening entertainment here – it’s just the crackle of the firepit and sizzle of the barbecue right outside your temporary home. That’s not to say this spacious and secluded site has no handy amenities, though: it has books and toys for the kids to borrow, and there's a charging point to keep your phone juiced up – you'll likely need that GPS when you’re out wandering in the splendid surrounds. A fridge-freezer is in the farmyard area as well, so food sourced from the supermarket in Bude (just over 15 minutes’ drive) will stay fresh for longer. Once your mobile’s charged up, get your map app on the go and start saving some of the top things to do in the local area: there’s a beach at Bude for surfing lessons (with hire available if you’re already an expert at riding the waves) and strolls along the South West Coast Path are within 20 minutes’ drive.

Brimstone non-electric grass and gravel tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch (private bathroom amenities, secluded)

Liked: My children loved running around the exclusive campsite and the composite toilet was easy to get used to. They like the robbins entering the site each day and the bats flying around at night. We could also hear a tawny owl each night, which was great. I liked the level pitches and during a heavy down pore, the site was not water-logged and drained well. We had some initial issues with the shower settings but the owner quickly resolved them in ten minutes. Which was really great and my kids continued to get showered for the day. Location-wise it's a quick drive to the beaches at Bude and Widemouth Bay.

Liked: Independent local family farm with personal touches and friendly hosts. Quiet and beautiful countryside location, only about 10/15 mins to Widemouth Bay and Bude, 40 to Tintagel. Lovely shower facilities, firepit in every pitch etc. Beautiful swallow nest in toilet/communal area, amazing to see them flying in and out

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Large pitches, well spaced apart from each other. Basic loo and shower completely sparkling and a washing up station in the simply camping field. We loved the fire pit and buying a bucket of wood was a great price. Our host was lovely very helpful and very friendly. Campsite is secluded but a quick drive from Bude. Perfect place to stay for a warm weekend in August.

Disliked: Nothing

Local attractions

Once you’ve maxed out all the coastal walks within a 20-minute drive of Bakesdown Farm, have a gentler lope along some of the local canals instead – Marhamchurch’s towpath is a 10-minute drive away, while the one at Bude (with cafés and bike hire nearby as well) is 15 minutes away. If traipsing about the latter’s town centre whets your appetite for more urban experiences in Cornwall, head to the county’s former capital of Launceston, 25 minutes’ drive inland in the Tamar Valley. Wander up to the hilltop castle or make tracks towards the narrow-gauge steam railway; independent shops are also here if you fancy rifling the racks. Alternatively, head back to Bude beach for walks along the golden sweep of sand or pull out your paddleboard and glide along the water at the lido-like sea pool scenically set among the rocks.
