General

  • Family-run farm site
  • A mile from the beaches and town centre of Bude
  • Animals to feed and a shell craft studio on site

If you're staying close to Cornish beaches, you might want to do something with your seashells. Such is the state of affairs at Atlantic Camping near Bude, a site so family-friendly it's set up its own shell craft studio for small (and big) sorts to craft their foraged shells into ornaments or use them to decorate bits and pieces like pots, mirrors and picture frames.

And the kids might like the menagerie in the adjacent field too. Greeting – and feeding – the chickens, turkeys, geese, sheep, three alpacas and a donkey all living right next to the site are usually a big hit with small guests: just ask a member of staff for feed if you want to dispense dinner.

Atlantic Camping is a family-run farm campsite, set within 26 acres of farmland, a mile from the surfing beaches of north Cornwall's Bude. The farm entrance is set directly on the Atlantic Highway (the A39, the main road past Bude) so is easily accessible to all vehicle types, but the campsite part is set well back from the road on the other side of the farm: no traffic noise here.

The planted-out pitches are set among two and a half acres of well-mown grass, with a climbing frame and ball game area for the kids. Amenities include a washing-up area with four sinks, and a toilet and shower block with six showers and seven toilets, including a disabled toilet and one with baby-changing facilities.

The pubs, restaurants and attractions of Bude town centre are a 20-minute walk from the farm: bring a torch if you're coming or going at night.

Overall a lovely site and nice location 18/08/2017

Lovely location, near to beaches and amenities, staff were friendly and helpful when asked. The children's park was lovely moly children spent a while there and the shell craft area was great the lady who worked in there was very friendly and helpful.

    Disliked:

We booked a large pitch as we have a big tent and paid extra for it. But our pitch was the same size as everyone else's so didn't leave us a lot of room. The noise after 10 should be quiet but there wasn't anyone policing this so noisy tents were allowed to stay noisy until they wanted which was frustrating.
The toilets and showers were clean and well stocked however they were just wooded sheds really my children were afraid of the spiders in them and there wasn't really an alternative but this was fine really overall. The wifi was available but very hit and miss.

The shell-making shop, although quite expensive.

    Disliked:

Rules rules rules rules and more rules. Very off putting before you even get there! And when the toilet on site went wrong and covered my husband in other peoples excrement - what did they do to help? They said they would put an out of order sign up and offered us the use of the washing machines which would be switched on at 10am the following day. Very poor service.

From the manager...

This is not a fair comment. Unfortunately, the toilet being used at that time has a mechanical Saniflo unit, it is solely for toilet use. If the user puts down other items the unit will be damaged, and the pressure will force water back. The system clears itself each normal use. There would be no excrement from others.

Great location and easy to reach,Environment is very pleasant: very warm welcome: quiet enough to suit early nighters!Suited our needs perfectly for one night in a camper van. We would use it for the same purpose again .

    Disliked:

That there were two very different standards of toilet and shower. it is quite difficult to cope with clothes, towel etc with only one peg in the shower room! One of the taps had so much pressure in the toilet that it cover the whole cubicle with water! These are little things but they make all the difference when camping - and its raining! Bit frustrating we didn't have any information about the wi-fi!

The campsite was very clean with an on site shop for your necessities. The pitches were large enough to easily fit our 6 man tent and car on with room for an outside table and chairs. It was far enough from the main highway that there was minimal sound from passing vehicles. Getting into bude was a 5 minute drive with 3 possible routes and a 35 minute walk which is helped by a path through the campsite to save from having to walk along the main road. The campsite had a family feel with a place for kids to play on outside equipment but also seemed very safe with clearly marked speed signs and places to stand out of the way if people were driving past. The pitches all had some plants growing between them giving you a clearly marked space. We did not have to queue once for the showers or toilet and every morning these were thoroughly cleaned and if needed also in the evenings. Electric hook up was very simple with each hook up point being directly on your pitch. I would definitely stay again as it was a lovely place to be.

    Disliked:

There were only 2 staff on site when we were there and only one of these was ever avalible to talk to if needed. She could always be found in the shop at the end of the site if needed. The pitch that we had no.14 was on a slight slant which wasn't a great problem but was noticeable.

Price, location, play area, genuinely friendly and helpful Filipino lady warden

    Disliked:

Cleanliness of washing up area, toilets and showers (not good), random dirty and dangerous (to children) old animal pens and sheds, lack of hooks to hang clothes etc in small shower cubicles, very close proximity of camping pitches (just a few metres to neighbouring tents), noisy neighbours into late hours (OK not the fault of the site but close proximity makes noise more of an issue)

From the manager...

Booked two nights basic pitch non electric.
Unfortunately the review does not make sense, there are NO old animal pens or sheds AT ALL!. Showers, toilets, etc cleaned three times daily. Pitch 32 is 12 metres by 10metres. There is plenty of room not to pitch next to the neighbour. Noise was not reported except when he left, we checked after with several other tents in that area and they said they had no complaint about noise. Had we been advised it would have been looked into.

Local attractions

The beaut beaches of Bude are rightly famed for their golden sands, clean water and surfing breaks: get along to Summerleaze and Crooklets within Bude for surf, and to the National Trust-managed Sandymouth for a quieter vibe via its steep ravine.

The long sands and popular surfing waves of Widemouth Bay are a few miles from Bude, Crackington Haven is within eight miles, and the family-friendly beach of Northcott Mouth is a top spot nearby for rockpooling.

In Bude town, spend a morning wandering around the harbour and Bude's buildings including the oldest in town, Quay Cottage, and the heritage centre now housed in Bude Castle. Then, perhaps, a pint, lunch or pasty before tackling the local stretch of the also-famed South West Coast Path, from Bude Canal to Crackington Haven, and then further south to Boscastle and Tintagel…?

Horse riding, cycling, ten-pin bowling, fishing, tennis and golf are all available in the region too: ask the Atlantic Camping team for its top tips.
