  • Family-run farm site
  • A mile and a half from the beaches and town centre of Bude
  • Animals to feed and a shell craft studio on site
If you're staying close to Cornish beaches, you might want to do something with your seashells. Such is the state of affairs at Atlantic Camping near Bude, a site so family-friendly it's set up its own shell craft studio for small (and big) sorts to craft their foraged shells into ornaments or use them to decorate bits and pieces like pots, mirrors and picture frames. Atlantic Camping is a family-run farm site set within 26 acres of farmland, a mile and a half from the surfing beaches of north Cornwall's Bude. The farm entrance is set directly on the Atlantic Highway (the A39, the main road past Bude) so is easily accessible to all vehicle types, but the site part is set well back from the road on the other side of the farm: no traffic noise here. The planted-out pitches are set among two and a half acres of well-mown grass, with a climbing frame and ball game area for the kids. Atlantic Camping is home to chickens, turkeys, geese, sheep and alpacas; families are welcome to walk around the farm, or to take one of the walks straight out of the farm to local farm tracks and onwards. Amenities include a washing-up area with four sinks, and a toilet and shower block with six showers and seven toilets, including a disabled toilet and one with baby-changing facilities. The pubs, restaurants and attractions of Bude town centre are a 20-minute walk from the farm: bring a torch if you're coming or going at night.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: It was close to Bude.

Disliked: There was no toilet paper in toilets. The paint was flaking off the wall in the toilet, so you got covered in it. The door was very warped and didn’t close properly, and there was a dirty soaking wet bath mat folded on the floor. Very poor indeed. Also, there is only one toilet, so if someone is showering you will have a wait. The only facility to wash dishes was a good walk away, not under cover and no hot water.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Wi-Fi quite good but that’s about it. In fairness we did visit in February, however if they take bookings they should at least clean toilets and have hard stand available when as was when we stayed all grass pitches water logged.

Disliked: Very dirty toilet bocks, couldn’t get to fresh water tap as grass around it water logged, Road noise from the Bude boy racers club. Only saw 1 member of staff only on arrival just said don’t park on grass and have we paid!!

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Friendly welcome from staff. Lovely view. Rainy February weekend so we were put on the carpark with 4 other vans which was fine by us - happy not to get stuck in the mud!

Disliked: Facilities were dirty. We’re not that fussy but everything needed a really good clean.

Liked: Good location for Bude, will be nice in summer

Disliked: Very muddy in February, not really suitable for a campervan on the grass. Toilets were not the best, they are fairly basic

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The friendly staff and animals. Nothing else.

Disliked: This site is not geared up to be open all year round!!. When we arrived we were greeted by a very friendly gardner who took us to where we were going to be. This ended up being just a road that lead to the pitches and not an actual pitch!!. No information was given about the site or the facilities. This made it very difficult to level our caravan due to the sloping of the field. We were just lucky that our electrical lead was long enough to reach our van and we didn't have to use any of their facilities as they were not the nicest. As for the chemical waste disposal that is a health and safety hazard and considering it was mid winter the smell was horrendous!!. The owner lacked any kind of people skills and was more worried about us tearing up his grass. Considering he knew we had booked a grass pitch why did he except the booking Knowing how wet his ground was. It just felt like he wanted the money and nothing else. We would not return or recommend this site to anyone.

Local attractions

The beaut beaches of Bude are rightly famed for their golden sands, clean water and surfing breaks: get along to Summerleaze and Crooklets within Bude for surf, and to the National Trust-managed Sandymouth for a quieter vibe via its steep ravine. The long sands and popular surfing waves of Widemouth Bay are a few miles from Bude, Crackington Haven is within eight miles, and the family-friendly beach of Northcott Mouth is a top spot nearby for rockpooling. In Bude town, spend a morning wandering around the harbour and Bude's buildings – including the oldest in town, Quay Cottage, and the heritage centre now housed in Bude Castle. Then, perhaps, a pint, lunch or pasty before tackling the local stretch of the also-famed South West Coast Path, from Bude Canal to Crackington Haven, and then further south to Boscastle and Tintagel…? Horse riding, cycling, ten-pin bowling, fishing, tennis and golf are all available in the region too: ask the Atlantic Camping team for its top tips.
