Ruthern Valley Holidays: Camping pod in spring

General

  • Friendly site in a tree-filled valley near Bodmin Moor
  • Well-maintained and peaceful park in a wildlife haven
  • Easy drive to both coasts and five minutes' ride to the Camel Trail

Escape with a break to Ruthern Valley Holidays… At this friendly site in a tree-filled valley near Bodmin Moor, the emphasis is on making the most of the natural surroundings – think birds and rabbits rather than bingo nights, and a gently meandering stream instead of the boom of a disco bar.

The site is carefully laid out to offer visitors the maximum space and seclusion possible. Kids will have a blast roaming around the woods building dens and wildlife spotting, chatting to the resident chickens and pigs, and bouncing around the leafy playground area.

Ruthern Valley Holidays also has a licensed shop selling bangers, other local goodies and some essential camping gear. Other amenities include solar-heated showers, toilets, a laundry and washing-up facilities.

Fantastic location, well run site with a lovely relaxing feel and well kept facilities. You really feel like you are part of your surroundings. The hosts were very welcoming and we had a great recommendation of a Romanian merlot stocked in the site shop which went well with the very tasty wood fired pizza that was available onsite.

    Disliked:

*Beautiful quite place surrounded by trees, it was perfect for the hot days as it's always in a shade.
    *Friendly staff.

    Disliked:

*Damp and smell in the pod. There was permanent smell of damp inside the pod, I guess because the place is in the shade of the trees the sun can't get to dry everything out. Would do with at least fresh coat of wood stain.
*Dated shower facilities. Never had a chance to come to a clean shower in the morning, all the mess would be still there from the night before, at 8 o'clock in the morning, I wouldn't say that this is very early. The walls, doors, radiators need a good clean, not pleasant to use the facilities. One night had to finish my daughters shower with cold water.

Beautifully kept site in a woodland setting, pitches for 25 tents and plenty of places for kids to run and play. Toilet and wash facilities are well kept and cared for with new showers recently added. Owners Andrew and Nicola really have put pride into this quiet site, with a whole area set aside for kids to play, climbing frame, swings etc. This is a premium site for a really low budget in an area remote and yet only 10minutes drive from the shops. This site needs to be considered for a great base to explore Cornwalls both north and south coasts. Even if you don’t like camping there are a host of lodges onsite to hire

Nice setting, generous size pitched. Handy well stocked shop. Shop and pitch not over priced. Lady owner was lovely.

    Disliked:

A bit grass precious, unable to take car to the pitch even to unload. Was slightly awkward as air tent uses pump attached to car. Fortunately we had hand pump but that was hard work for achy back. Parking was close by but still had to carry everything to pitch. A little bit slopey so felt like was gonna roll out of bed but that wasn't the end of the world. The man seemed nice at first but he grumpily informed us of the "no radio policy" which we were unaware of. We were having a normal level conversation over the radio so it wasn't loud. We had spoken to our neighbours and they were fine with it and said they couldn't hear it.
Very narrow lanes. Had to reverse up if car came in other direction.

A quiet, secluded site best for exploring local walks and Camel trail.11/07/2021

Very quiet and peaceful site in woodland full of wildlife. Well stocked shop and friendly staff. Facilities were limited in number (some toilets closed for social distancing) but very clean. Unisex showers which were spotless, roomy and lots of hot water. Luckily it was quiet so no queues for amenities but imagine it will be different in the school holidays. Perfect for a relaxing break close to the Camel trail and lots of walking/ cycling routes nearby. Kids would love playing in the woodland. Good recycling options.

    Disliked:

No grey waste drop just a drain by the shower block so difficult to empty our tank - not everyone carries a bucket in a small camper! We were pitched on gravel in a shady corner which turned out to be very dark under the trees, not helped by the cloudy weather, not sure how much sun you'd get onto the pitch when it did come out.
Not the best choice if yr looking to spend a lot of time at the beach. At least a 30 min drive down narrow lanes to get to Polzeath via Wadebridge. (The nearest beach).
