General

  • Family-run site on a 2000-acre working farm in the South Downs
  • On the site of Bignor Roman Villa; 25 minutes' drive from Chichester
  • Located in a dark sky reserve; 12-acre maize maze during August

Friends, Romans, country fans – take a look at this neat little farm site deep in the South Downs. Bignor Farms Camping at Bignor Roman Villa marries ancient history with rural views and ultra-low levels of light pollution for hols full of learning, roaming and stargazing.

The surrounding area is stonkingly scenic (these are the Downs, after all) and mightily easy to access, too – the long-distance South Downs Way is about 1.5 miles from site. Those looking to refuel while out and about will find barrowloads of welcoming country pubs on their explores; the nearest is a 25-minute stroll away.

Barbecues are welcome at Bignor Farms Camping at Bignor Roman Villa, so self-prepped grub is another option here. Fresh produce is sold on site when in season; head to Pulborough (15 minutes' drive) to pick up other bits and pieces at a well-stocked supermarket.

Amenities like portaloos and showers mean you won't have to live totally ancient-style while you're here, but don't expect luxuries like underfloor heating or a spa… unless, that is, you're planning on checking out the Roman-built versions at the museum next door. Bignor Roman Villa also has a tearoom, gift shop and picnic area that you're free to use during opening hours.

Heading to this site during August? The farm's 12-acre maize maze has pride of place here at the height of summer; kids and adults alike are encouraged to give it a go and be thoroughly bamboozled by its twists and turns…

We had such a wonderful stay at Bignor campsite! The site has beautiful views and is really peaceful - just the cries of spectacular red kites flying over - and owls at night! All that and next to a fantastic Roman Villa too!
The pitches were very large and the facilities were kept very clean and Covid safe by Lisa the owner of the site. Lisa could not have been more friendly and helpful, checking if everything was ok With us campers every day.
Lovely walks from the site and a 20 min stroll to nice pub in Sutton where we had a fabulous lunch - dog friendly too.
We will definitely be back for another stay and have recommended the site to family too!

Our camping trip began with a warm and friendly welcome from Lisa which gave it a family feel. When we arrived there was already 3 other lovely families pitched on site. There was plenty of space between pitches. The site has two portaloos and one static toilet on the museum site which were spotless and contained plenty of toilet rolls. There were plenty of hand sanitisers dotted around the site.

We then pitched our tent before taking a walk up Bignor Hill and back through the village taking in the stunning rural scenery by which time it was getting on for dinner time. This was my first camping experience and is why I only booked for one night but it was my camping buddies umpteenth. We popped into the local village to buy a chinese take away and ate it in camp. Just as dusk drew in we set off on a night walk along a bridal path, through a few fields which was really nice in the dark, listening to the rustling noises of wildlife in the grass and an owl in the distance. By the time we returned a few more people had arrived and a couple of more tents that had been put up. The bigger tents had beautiful fairy type lights that lit the entrance to their tents and they had proper camping fires lit which made the ambience feel a bit more like a camp. At the same time I was quite suprised at how quiet everyone was. We settled down in our tent to sleep at about 10pm and then woke up in the early hours to look up at a perfect night sky lit up with stars and the moon. We were lucky to observe two shooting stars flash across the sky. We settled back to sleep for a couple of more hours and the woke to an amazing sunrise. By this time it was time to try the showers before breakfast and we weren't disappointed. The showers were as good and as clean as you'd expect from a five star hotel.

My friend who has alot of experience of camping and camping at alot of different campsites rates Bignor as the best.

I can honestly say that I am already looking forward to my next camping trip and that is thanks to the positive experience that I've had at Bignor.

We've both been raving about our experiences of Bignor to friends and family.

We both would definitely return to Bignor.

Cycled Shipwrites Way from Bentley then Southdows Way an I was so glad when I got to Bignor Campsite. The extra 10Kg on the bike and the tougher than anticipated terrain was challenging.

Not long after I arrived Lisa come round to check everyone was OK and had what they needed. Thanks Lisa.

What a fantastic little place. We loved it there. Lisa is fantastic, so friendly and happy. Nothing is too much trouble. The facilities are the cleanest I've ever seen. We have no concerns with the portaloos with a 3 and 5 year old. They were tip top and gleaming. Very covid safe. We are definitely going back. Highly recommended, although want to keep this place to ourselves.

Thanks Lisa. You are fab xx
