General

  • Off grid camping in 250 acres of beautiful, secluded woodlands
  • 10 minutes' drive from Bluebell Railway steam train trips
  • Honesty shop on site selling firewood, fresh eggs and local veg

Ever fancied ditching the fast-paced modern world and running off to live a simple life in the woods? Here’s a place you can indulge that fantasy for a while – Great Walstead Woodland Hideaway is a properly peaceful back-to-basics site in 250 acres of private woods in the scenic Sussex countryside.

It’s all about keeping things as nature intended here: off-grid pitches are spread across the site, so each one has its own secluded spot, and the woodland is kept car-free so the nippers can roam safely (leave your motor at the car park and enlist the help of the folks on site to transport your gear in a wheelbarrow). If you’re travelling by train, those same friendly types are happy to ferry you from nearby Haywards Heath station.

Naturally, you’ll be wanting to embrace your alfresco lifestyle by cooking outdoors, and guests are encouraged to do so by lighting up a barbecue or campfire. For eco reasons, only firewood from the site is permitted, but they’ll gladly sell you a good stack of it, along with fresh eggs and organic veg from local farms.

Life here isn’t entirely wild, however – guests have access to compost loos, a bucket shower and a drinking water tap. And civilisation in the form of a proper pint of beer is a mile and a half away in the pubs of Lindfield (a pretty little village that’s also got a small supermarket, a smart wine shop and a tempting deli).

The forest set up is amazing, lovely woodland and lovely walks to be had. Also loved the farm and produce we could buy.

We had a lovely pitch (until it rained) away from families with children :-)

Loved walking into the small town of Lindfield and checking out a few pubs.

    Disliked:

Only dislike was when our particular pitch flooded when the rain came down heavily! I think because we were on a slight slope. But it unfortunately meant we had to leave the sight a day early due to the tent filling with water which was running down the hill.

Liked the spaces between pitches. Enjoyed the peace of the woodland area, and appreciated the basic eco friendly facilities. The farmer handed out marshmallows for roasting during the evening, and checked to see that the campers were ok

Liked the farmer - so friendly and told us about the farm! Loved the farm produce and honesty box system, being brought marshmallows with our evening fire, the acres of woods to roam around in, the easy and lovely walk to Lindfield to try out some pubs, the compost toilet (much better than portaloos!).

    Disliked:

some other campers disobeyed the quiet time rules which was a bit disappointing and kept us awake, but that's no fault of the site itself.

This is as close to nature as you could possibly get, it was such a peaceful campsite with lots of adventures to be had by our young children. We were in the large pitch which was perfect and had loads of room. The staff were extremely helpful and even came around at night to see if we wanted any more wood for the fire or sweets.

    Disliked:

the walk to the car with all of our gear, wheel barrows were supplied but it was a bit of a hassle especially when we were packing up in the rain (my wife said that added to the appeal of the campsite but she wasn't doing to moving...)

I booked this to spend a weekend doing some “proper camping” with my two brothers.

Layout is well thhought out and the pitches aren’t on top of each other. Our pitch really felt like our own little clearing in the woods. Pitch was level large enough for a large bell tent and I was also able to use my hammock.

Enjoyed being able to have a fire and fire pit was large enough to have a proper camp fire and cook all of our meals on it.

Staff were really friendly and we received a very warm welcome. Nice selection of produce from the farm shop. Can recommend the honey!

Compost toilets and the bucket shower may not be to everyones taste but they are clean and well maintained and in my view preferable to most I have encountered on more run of the mill campsites.

Liked this place so much that other than popping ot to get some food we spent the whole weekend on site.

Can’t wait to come back again. Thank you!

    Disliked:

    Genuinely nothing we disliked.

The site was nice and allowed open fires in the fire pit. You can use the pitch in any configuration and you are also not far from a nice walk in the country. The facilities included a compost toilet that was very clean and pleasant, a tap for drinking water with buckets to take to your pitch for water and basins next to the tap for washing up anything you cook and eat with. I didn't use the shower but it should be noted that it isn't hot unless you boil water and put that water in the bucket for the shower. Overall the stay was relaxing and quiet as everyone respected the 10pm quiet time.

    Disliked:

There were a few things that really threw me off this site. Number 1 would be that some of the pitches were literally next to the path. Not all of them were but a fair few had a public path on them so other campers would constantly be waling past your site meaning privacy was limited. The worst I saw walking around the site was a site inbetween 2 very used paths that were next to the tap for water. So they would have people walking past regularly. Secondly, some of the pitches were very close together, so if you're someone that wants to be alone, I wouldn't recommend this site. Pitches were easily within sight of one another and also in the worst case scenario, withing earshot of each other which I didn't think was great.

Now the second and biggest issue I have was that you are not allowed to collect wood for your fire. You have to buy wood and it costs £8 pounds a stack. If you want an idea of how long it lasts, we burnt through it just to cook one meal and maybe a little after. This was a big problem for us as I was not happy spending money on something that I could just get by walking 20 feet and picking up myself. Their excuse is that it's bad for the environment but they are only open one month of the year, I think the other 11 months is enough for the bugs and the forest to regenerate it's wildlife. So if you don't like this either, do not come here. This is the one reason I will not be coming back because I am not made of money.

That concludes the issues with the site. Personally they are too big for me so I sadly means I won't be returning.
