Ditchling Camping: Wonderful open site with views of the South Downs in the background

General

  • Dog-friendly site in the peaceful South Downs National Park
  • A 25-minute drive from Brighton; 15 minutes to Devil’s Dyke
  • Adventure trail, swing tree and places for den making on site

Hunker down at Ditchling Camping, a dog-friendly site in the South Downs National Park. A 25-minute drive from Brighton and its busy coast, this site rests in the historic village of Ditchling, surrounded by vineyards, bumpy countryside and great views.

If the whole family is tagging along, there is much to play with around the site, including an adventure trail through the woodlands around site, a swing tree and places to fashion your own little dens.

The site is only a five-minute drive (or a 50-minute walk) from the traditional Jack and Jill windmills and its neighbouring family-run pub serving good ales and grub. There’s also a vineyard 15 minutes’ walk away from the site, good for wine-tasting tours, or you can simply pedal past country lanes on the surrounding cycling routes (hire a bike locally if you may).

On your route, stop by the characterful Ditchling, home to local craftspeople and winemakers. Here, there is a nice selection of independent shops, cosy cafés and pubs that will ladle you a good serving of Sussex food, all within a ten-minute walk.

Back on site, end the day with an intimate evening beside the firepits. Things are kept nicely straightforward on site with warm showers and a separate dishwashing area.

    - Big open field with lots of different places to pitch
    - Great location, lots of walks close by. There is a field next door that is great to walk the dog.

Nice campsite location, very near to museum, village and rolling hills. Enjoyed our stay. Fire pit and wood available. Nice little wooded area in the middle of the field for kids to play in.

    Disliked:

Facilities are a bit basic. Only one washing up sink with no hot water. Showers don’t “feel” very private. Field bit boggy in place. Quite noisy neighbours. No camp shop.

From the manager...

Thanks for your stay - we really enjoyed having you. Im sorry that we don't have a camp shop, but we dint advertise a cam shop. There are loads of shops on the doorstep to include two fantastic pubs, a flower shop and a great Post Office - Only 10 mins walk away we have Budgens and Sainsbury's to help with your stay as advertised... Hopefully see you next year.

Large open space with plenty of options to pitch your tent, far away from other campers. Loved that we could put all our tents together without restriction. Dogs welcome, enclosed field so they could run and so could our toddler. We were delivered firewood on our arrival and then left to it!

The site was very well kept and the manager was friendly and not over bearing like I've experienced in other campsites. Had a great time in the area and all for a reasonable price!

    Disliked:

Only slight downside was a few cars racing down the road towards the evening. But with being out walking during the day and getting back late afternoon I can say that I only had 2-3 cars disturb me during my 2 night stay.

Ditchling is lovely and this is a small campsite with pretty views. It is a rustic site and would work for a night or two but not for a longer holiday.
It is a lovely open field and you can camp anywhere and take as much space as you like.
It's within walking distance of at least two pubs and we enjoyed dinner at one of them.

    Disliked:

It felt like this campsite will be nice in the future but that it was still being made around us!
There was no signage at all to even tell you the name of the campsite - we just trusted we were in the right place.
Although there was a washing up area there was no drainage.
The showers were completely open which would have been lovely if it was very secluded but unfortunately it wasn't. On the Saturday the owners put up some screens which shielded you from the road but they still weren't sufficient as you could be seen by a lot of the campsite, anyone doing their washing up and maybe even someone playing rugby in the adjacent pitch! Our friends decided not to bother with showers which obviously isn't ideal if you are staying for more than a couple of nights.
There were no logs available on the first night and they arrived later on the the second day. Also, you need to bring your own fire pit!
It was a shame that nobody was around to say hello or check people in or out.

From the manager...

Thanks for your comment - I totally agree in respect of the shower screen, although the showers are hidden in the trees, so I'm not quite sure how Rugby (which is played in the winter) players could see in. The rugby field is also totally the other side.
Due to Covid the fences only arrived on site last week and were erected as soon as possible. It was thought that the fence would screen the showers, although this is evidentlyy not the case. Shower curtains have now been installed.
I am sorry that you did not order logs before arrival - Everyone that ordered logs received them.
The site clearly states - BRING YOUR OWN FIRE PIT....
