General

  • Rural camping in a spectacular setting a few miles from Chichester
  • On-site toilet facilities and pub nearby
  • Dogs welcome, fires allowed and firepits available for hire

Do you like hols where you can ditch the car and wander merrily into the countryside and possibly also along a scenic canal? Have a stay at West Sussex's Donnington Wild Camping if so, for closeness to waterside hikes, city days, cracking local pubs and long lengths of local cycle and bike paths.

Set on a rural farm in spectacular surroundings, the farm is a short stroll of 100 metres or so to the Chichester Canal, which you can wander or pedal along to get into Chichester a few miles hence or onto the beach at West Wittering four miles away. About 50 minutes' walk in the other direction takes you to Chichester Marina in the city's handsome harbour, for bites to eat in the restaurant or taking a bike along the 18-kilometre Salterns Way.

Donnington is a wild camping site, with well-spaced pitches marked out in circles among fields of long grass. It allows campfires (in hired firepits only, please) and has toilets and washing-up facilities.

Tasty food is dished up at the local pub about 15 minutes' walk away (have their roast if you're around on a Sunday); if you'd rather cook up a storm on the campfire, the local village with supermarket is within easy walking distance, and if you do want to take the car, more supermarkets along with shops and pubs are within five minutes.

Please note

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Rob was very helpful and contacted me before I arrived and checked everything was OK after I arrived. Good size pitches with plenty of room to park next to tent. Set amidst meadowy grassland with pitches grass nice and trimmed. Chemical loos x 3 clean and one washing up sink within a minutes walk. Set to the rear of farmland with stone gravel drive leading to a track with pitches randomly set quite far apart so very nice and private. 10 minutes drive from Chichester and 20 minutes from beaches and great for everything this lovely area has to offer.

We were greeted by Rob who was very friendly and helpful. The pitches were lovely and spread out so everyone had their own space and it is a beautiful setting. There were lots of lovely walks to do from the site - we were only there for a day so just went to the harbour and later to the local pub, but if we had been there longer would have walked along the canals either into Chichester or down to the marina. Dinner in the Blacksmiths arms was delicious .

    Disliked:

Unfortunately where the site is located you can hear noise from a busy nearby road, which is a shame because apart from that the site is very peaceful.

Location was really convenient yet the site is very rural and peaceful. Great layout with secluded pitches and a good fire bucket supplied.
Greeted with a smile and given good tips on where to walk, where to have a drink or food and perfect swimming spot down at Selsey.
Wild camping so portaloos only facility and these were well supplied with toilet roll and hand wash available.
No facilities as wild camping so that was fine.

setting was really special, so different to most campsites where there's lots of lighting and you are close to the next pitch. Having a firepit as well was really great. Big thumbs up.

    Disliked:

You rare never really going to like portaloos so they are the downside, a bit more attention to cleaning them and the option of a shower, even a rustic one, would be great but then you are aware oft these two points when you book.

Local pub, The Blacksmiths, is 15 min walk away, excellent food and ambiance. Great walks along the Chichester canal.
