General

  • Rural camping in a spectacular setting a few miles from Chichester
  • On-site toilet facilities and pub nearby
  • Dogs welcome, fires allowed and firepits available for hire

Do you like hols where you can ditch the car and wander merrily into the countryside and possibly also along a scenic canal? Have a stay at West Sussex's Donnington Wild Camping if so, for closeness to waterside hikes, city days, cracking local pubs and long lengths of local cycle and bike paths.

Set on a rural farm in spectacular surroundings, the farm is a short stroll of 100 metres or so to the Chichester Canal, which you can wander or pedal along to get into Chichester a few miles hence or onto the beach at West Wittering four miles away. About 50 minutes' walk in the other direction takes you to Chichester Marina in the city's handsome harbour, for bites to eat in the restaurant or taking a bike along the 18-kilometre Salterns Way.

Donnington is a wild camping site, with well-spaced pitches marked out in circles among fields of long grass. It allows campfires (in hired firepits only, please) and has toilets and washing-up facilities.

Tasty food is dished up at the local pub about 15 minutes' walk away (have their roast if you're around on a Sunday); if you'd rather cook up a storm on the campfire, the local village with supermarket is within easy walking distance, and if you do want to take the car, more supermarkets along with shops and pubs are within five minutes.

Please note

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Please note that the facilities are a standpipe and a portable chemical toilet.

Lovely place - particularly liked how quiet and spread out the pitches are. Walked in with hike tent later in the evening. Thanks for the extra directions Rob. Really fantastic site; great for an overnight stop for hiking too. We'll be back soon!

Last minute booking arranged easily on PitchUp.com. My 14 yr old son and I were the first guests of the season - arriving Monday April 1; the very pleasant and helpful campsite owner, Rob, met as arranged and gave us the low down of the locality, site facilities and fire wood etc. We have visited the area on a number of occasions and were familiar with the excellent pub choices and places to visit within easy access of the campsite. Donnington Wild Camping IS intentionally "pared down" to maintain the natural surroundings offered; as we arrived we saw a large herd of Roe Deer in the adjacent field less than 50m away. From our tent we watched a kestrel scouting the hedgerow right above our tent. Loos are v clean and discreet with washing and water facilities. Very close to Chichester Marina and Salterns Way ( 13 mile circular path / cycle ride - subject to Itchenor ferry seasonal availability.....) Also worth booking up with Kelleys' Hero charters for super sea fishing trips (talk to skipper - Bex) out of Hayling Island which is close by. Sadly the weather turned pretty nasty and after a minus 3 degrees night and with the threat of rain for the rest of the week - we packed up in a hailstorm and headed home!
This is a really small and pleasant campsite - superb for dogs, with privacy and v safe for young children - and we would definitely look forward to returning. Thanks to Rob for being flexible, helpful and understanding during our stay this week!
Adam, Spencer and the dog, Cody!
