General

  • Rural camping in a spectacular setting a few miles from Chichester
  • On-site toilet facilities and pub nearby
  • Dogs welcome, fires allowed and firepits available for hire

Do you like hols where you can ditch the car and wander merrily into the countryside and possibly also along a scenic canal? Have a stay at West Sussex's Donnington Wild Camping if so, for closeness to waterside hikes, city days, cracking local pubs and long lengths of local cycle and bike paths.

Set on a rural farm in spectacular surroundings, the site is a short stroll of 100 metres or so from the Chichester Canal, which you can wander or pedal along to get into Chichester a few miles hence or onto the beach at West Wittering, four miles away. About 50 minutes' walk in the other direction takes you to Chichester Marina in the city's handsome harbour, for bites to eat in the restaurant or taking a bike along the 18-kilometre Salterns Way.

Donnington is a wild camping site, with well-spaced pitches marked out in circles among fields of long grass. It allows campfires (in hired firepits only, please) and has toilets and washing-up facilities.

Tasty food is dished up at the local pub about 15 minutes' walk away (have their roast if you're around on a Sunday); if you'd rather cook up a storm on the campfire, the local village with supermarket is within easy walking distance, and if you do want to take the car, more supermarkets (along with shops and pubs) are within five minutes.

Please note

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Please note that the facilities are a standpipe and a portable chemical toilet.

Location - good, easy access to pretty walks. Private pitches, well spaced apart with how they are mowed into long grass. Clear instructions prior to arrival and in booklet available by toilets.

    Disliked:

Portaloos are portaloos. Could hear cars from the nearby roads but not too intrusive.

We had an amazing time and will definitely be back. You absolutely get the feel of wild camping but with campsite facilities.

    Main pros:

Big pitch which is surrounded by tall grasses and lots of space between pitches so you feel in your own world.

The fire pit was great for keeping warm in the evening/cooking on.

Toilets were always very clean (although they are portaloos so in the hot weather they got a bit smelly).

Great washing up area and again more tall grasses so if you wanted a bottle shower you could do so without making things muddy.

The location is perfect for exploring the area and there is so much to see and do: cycle along the canal to the beach or to Chichester (you can hire bikes via an app from Cider House Kitchen or the marina for £2.50 per hour but it caps out at £15 per 24 hours), beautiful walks, loads of great kayaking spots. Rob was super responsive and helpful with recommendations, which were always spot on.

Beautiful well positioned campsite within easy reach of everything

    Disliked:

Toilets. Not cleaned the whole time we were there - to use and allow my kids to I cleaned and disinfected one when we could not avoid using). We spent the whole time choosing where we went for toilet use to avoid the campsite. They were emptied Thursday as we left and as we left we used and boy the difference in smell.
Before leaving all the reviews were bad re the toilets and they’re correct. My son cleans toilets at a local campsite and they’re doing it three times a day - once a day in these times would have seemed appropriate. Campers are using the fields and grassy areas - seen.
I think own toilets or a solution would make a far more desirable site, unfortunately when asked the first thing that comes to mind are the toilets yet it really is a beautiful and well positioned site.
