General

  • Family site with ten fishing lakes
  • Also with heated pool, kids' club, bar and bistro
  • Less than five minutes from the centre of Chichester

Ten terrific fishing lakes, 150 acres of succulent West Sussex scenery, and less than five minutes from the historic centre of Chichester: pretty impressive vital statistics for Chichester Lakeside Holiday Park, which is also just a few miles from the beaches of the south coast.

The site offers mucho family fun with its heated outdoor pool and paddling pool, lovely lakeside nature trails, and Loopy kids’ club sessions that run from morning until early evening.

Later in the day, you can watch the sun go down over the sparkling lake from the decked terrace of the bar; inside you’ll find a bistro and entertainment venue for a lively night of bingo, karaoke, competitions and live acts. There’s also a brand-spanking new shower block, a small shop, a launderette and a children’s playground.

The pool was actually steaming on our last morning which was dull and almost on the point of rain. It was beautifully warm and pretty, 120cm deep. The lifeguard was great, fun and friendly so big thanks to him from me and my two children. We had a pitch with electricity and had a choice of well numbered pitches 9m by 9m. The approach was beautiful and reception staff were friendly and gave a good map of the site. There were two shower blocks, one new, both with toilets and shower curtains and the water was always hot when I went. The outside washing up area had two sinks with hot water and there was an outside 3 pin plug where you can charge your phone! The new shower blocks also had plugs for hairdryers etc. or phones. The were meal deals available for various numbers of days for breakfast and dinner e.g. £33 for adult and £14 for child for 2 days breakfast and evening meal. I wished that I had done that as they were very good value. We only ate chips actually, which were great. Other meals we cooked on our camping stove. When we stayed there was one of those four unit high trampolines with elastic for £3 for 4 minutes and paddle boats for £3 for 10 minutes which my children enjoyed. There was also a bouncy slide which was charged I think £3 for 5 goes and two bouncy castles. Note that these are closed when rainy and so is the pool. There is a laundrette and a shop. The shop only had bacon and happy shopper quality sausages which could be cooked on a BBQ. Other fridge food were things like sausage rolls and microwave burgers in buns. There was a good selection of 2 for £1 sweet bags and lots of crisps etc. The usual essentials like washing up liquid etc. and lots of tins of things like stew. There was evidence of fresh bakery but none left when I went in. The shop clearly made an effort to stock affordable items.

    Disliked:

I think we were actually very lucky that we came at a time when there were few campers. On our first day there was about 20 people in the pool and on the last day there was only us and one other person. The middle day it rained and was closed. We could stay in the pool as long as we liked. If the camp site and mobile homes were full there is no way a small pool like that would be big enough to give everyone a go. Also there were only two sinks that I could see right next to the place people emptied and cleaned their mobile loo's with only a small divider between the two. Not a nice place to queue if lots of people wanted to wash up at the same time. The children's entertainment for age 5-10 consisted of what seemed to be colouring in and musical bumps/statues and my two children didn't want to go anywhere near it. The arcade was very small and very tatty with empty and broken machines. lots of the toilets did not lock and a lot of the soap dispensers were missing in the shower blocks. The electric sites only had an outside ROUND three pin plug so we could not use them so do bring an adapter if you want to use a normal three pin plug in item on those. The children's play area is one unit probably fun for a child age 6-8 years. On a rainy day there is really nothing to do. Having said that we went to Chichester to go swimming in the indoor pool there for about £3.50 a go and there is also the Chichester cinema within a few minutes drive for those wet days. The noise from the A27 vehicles was constant throughout the night. It did not spoil our stay but is noted as it could be important to some quests. If you are likely to be bothered by this request a pitch as far away from the road as possible. I would also point out that for the non electric camping places there did not seem to be any allocated spots for people's tents so maybe it was up to guests to find a place which could be a problem if it was busy. It this is likely to bother you then go for an allocated electric space which we did for our 6 man tent.

Ammenities very old and frankly filthy. Rubbish piled up uncollected, soap dispensers never filled, toilets and showers very smelly and dirty, washing up sinks decrepit, drained right over the road and more cob webs and spiders than an old shed. Site directly ajoins very busy A road. Staff were friendly but it was the worst camp site we have ever stayed on. Even the kids wanted to leave!

The drive in to the site is lovely and it fills you with hope, but that's where the good feelings end!

    Disliked:

The camping field is basically a flat open space with no trees or hedges to give privacy, so campers are in full view of each other. The smell of the ground where we had to pitch was awful. My husband said it smelt like a swamp. We pitched and forgot about it and didn't think about the smell again, until we were packing the tent away when the smell hit us again. Our tent will be washed thoroughly before our next trip.

The grass was long, there were several abandoned tents and caravans on the site and you just got the feeling that the place was dirty. It's right beside a busy road so the noise is constant. The toilets and showers were awful, with very few provided for the amount of people there and, for us, were a long walk from our tent. The toilets either didn't flush, the doors didn't lock or there was no toilet paper. At one point, one of the toilet blocks was closed altogether due to blockage. We went out for the day and were relieved to find it had re-opened when we got back. In one of the shower blocks, you could only get a cold shower, and I mean cold. The other shower block was luke warm.

I've been reading other reviews about the place and the caravans don't sound much better. Couldn't wait to leave.

3 families went each with young children and camped in tents. 11 of us in total from 1yr to 41yrs.

We weren't expecting much after reading the reviews.

The site was very busy, there was a lot of road noise (we expected these and it didn't have a negative impact on our experience).

The staff were all friendly and very helpful, there just weren't enough of them to cope with demand!

The toilets got closed due getting blocked and there were people on site within hours and they worked through the night to sort it. Fantastic response and it can't be helped... However when they were working they were always filthy. Yes they were cleaned VERY regularly, but it wasn't enough. When you have that many paying guests and that few facilities management needs to help their staff out more.

The clubhouse.. The bar and tables were filthy, not often cleaned. More beer on the bar than in the glasses, stop trays overflowing... Again the poor staff were friendly and helpful but overwhelmed!

The playground was all but unusable for anyone I'd say under the age of 8. To get to the slide you have to use monkeybars... Our 1, 3, 3, 4 and 5 year old couldn't use it. Real shame as it would have been fantastic otherwise.

Pool was hot, crowded but well managed with time slots and bands to reserve your time. Not sure about the water quality though... Should be able to see your feet in the pool shouldn't you?

Overall great site, facilities and staff, poorly let down by managements lack of planning for the number of people they had booked for a bank holiday weekend (that's what makes it worse in my book.. We'd all booked, they knew how many were coming!)... I'm also very glad we weren't in the tents that had been placed where all the sewage flooded!

Will I come back? Probably not, definitely not at a busy period.
