  • Family-friendly site in private woodland in South Downs National Park
  • Chichester 35 minutes’ drive; West Wittering beach 50 minutes
  • Firepit and outdoor shower; well-equipped kitchenette; stargazing
Planning to do a little stargazing on your next holiday in West Sussex? Bluebell Shepherd’s Hut has exclusive use of one acre of fenced woodland in South Downs National Park, an International Dark Skies Reserve. A nearby Woodland Trust meadow and an ancient forest on the other side of your private fence make this a top spot for daytime activities, too (think hikes and picnics). Down a narrow lane and over a stream is a wildlife haven where you can expect birdsong, oak trees, wildflowers and creatures like deer and buzzards. There’s also a little-known swimming hole on the River Arun (20 minutes’ walk). The handcrafted family-friendly hut has been kitted out with a capsule kitchen with a two-ring electric hob, toaster, kettle, fridge and a Moroccan sink (with a hot-water tap). Walk for miles in all directions, then freshen up in the gas-powered outdoor shower, which has log walls and a timber roof. Robes, towels, toiletries and a hairdryer are provided. Eat alfresco on the table under the tall oak. There are two firepits (one with a barbecue), and wood is provided. Other facilities include a four-foot bed with a memory-foam mattress and high-quality bed linen, a cosy woodburner and a composting loo with its own library. Some snacks will be waiting for you on arrival; for more supplies, head to Fittleworth’s community shop (10 minutes’ drive). Wisborough Green (five minutes) has two pubs and a tearoom. The owners’ house is a short walk away if you need them, and they have a cocker spaniel who’s happy to make friends.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: It was an amazing experience in the middle of the forest. Private, pretty and well organized hut with all that you need, including hammocks if you want to chill or plenty beautiful and full of blackberries walks around. Shepherd's hut

Liked: We absolutely loved staying at Bluebell! I'll be honest, I was unsure at first as my husband had booked it so we could recharge our batteries and escape for a few days !! It was brilliant, we loved Bluebell and all the extra touches and goodies when we got there. The bed was super comfortable and so cozy ! The shower area was amazing, we loved showering outside and the addes bonus of bathrobes supplied. Even the compost loo was brilliant! Maddy the spaniel was a huge hit with us and we loved her visits throughout the day and evening, she especially liked the fire we lit in the evenings!! All the extra touches that Jane had thought of were amazing. We will definitely be returning for a 2nd visit.

From the manager: Oh thank you for this lovely review and above all, I'm so delighted that Bluebell won you over and you were able to recharge in the woodland. We'd love to host you again. Thank you for your care and kindness. With kind regards, Jane (and Maddy!)

Shepherd's hut

Liked: This was the most RELAXING weekend we have ever had. No one around apart from the beautiful dog Maddy. Everything that you needed , no frills needed. We sat and relaxed and chatted. We enjoyed the space and nature.
The hut was everything you could want. Again no need for anything extra. The bed was comfy. It was clean and inviting. It packed so much in but still had enough room.
The fire pit area was decked out. Tables and chair blending into nature. The pit was perfect to cook on , that was my husbands favourite part. You can sit and chat and watch the birds and stars with no interruptions.
The shower and loo were a short walk away. Hot water and a lovely space to wake up in. The loo was perfect and it all just blended in.
Jane and her family were welcoming and they would have done anything to make sure our stay was perfect. Little card and treats were a lovely touch. Maddy the spaniel is the secret weapon I think. With little visits that make you smile.
We will be back. It was a space to stop and be in. No wifi (but some signal) , no people and just beautiful surroundings was perfection

Shepherd's hut

Liked: From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome by the host, we were left some treats in the hut which was a nice touch. Such a beautiful shepards hut perfectly decorated, every little detail had been thought of. Bluebell shepards hut was very comfortable and cosy, we enjoyed the evenings sitting next to the firepit listening to the owls and taking in the surroundings. The outside shower was amazing and a lovely experience, the area was very private, clean, and well equipped for cooking and relaxation. Plenty of nice walks nearby, we also met some beautiful horses, Maddy the dog was an added bonus, she popped over to see us throughout the day which we loved. I would definitely recommend staying here to anyone who loves nature, relaxation, and natural beauty, we hope to be back very soon.
