General

  • Farm site with spectacular views of the Surrey countryside
  • Wildlife haven: spot species from the site
  • Barbecues allowed

'Red sky at night, campers’ delight?' That might not be exactly how the saying goes, but you won’t give a hoot when goggling at the gorgeous scarlet sunset at Osney Lodge Farm.

Plonk yourself down on a camping chair on this peaceful spacious site and gape about you at the pitch-perfect views… remembering to stay very still so you won’t frighten off any of the rabbits, foxes and occasional deer that wander around the site, not to mention the resident buzzards cawing above…

Once you can make yourself move and the kids are clamouring to be fed, fire up the barbie for supper: self-contained barbecues and raised fires are A-OK here, and the farm sells self-contained burners if you haven’t brought your own kit.

Pitches at Osney Lodge are grass and have modern amenities: chemical waste disposal, fresh drinking water and separate toilets for ladies and gents.

If you’ve forgotten anything else or run out of essential gear, Osney is a mile down the lane from one of the biggest camping centres in the south-east for easy stocking up. And don't miss the ever popular campsite buggy which makes its way around the site two or three times a day to sell ice lollies, soft drinks, kindling and logs – and a tasty selection of cider and real ales personally tested and selected by the owner: how highly considerate.

The park is only eight minutes away from the Jolly Farmer pub for traditional beer and cider and a five-minute drive to the seventeenth century Fox and Hound for some of the best pub grub around. Once you get off your camping chair, that is...

Long un-cut grass, size of toilets and if you would like to hire their fire pits it's about £15

From the manager...

I am sorry if the grass was too long.
The gents takes two sitting and three standing, the ladies three sitting (I dont encourage ladies standing) Not sure that is too small.
The firepits are not about £15, they are £5 with free delivery and collection, free newspaper and ,if needed ,free instruction. If you prefer, you can bring your own. That is also free ,provided its construction prevents the grass being burned. Your car will smell like a bonfire Thats also free.

Large open field with good views, plenty of room to spread out and for children to play. Love the fire pit hire & log delivery. Noisy music not allowed so did not have to suffer other people's bad taste in music Nice pub within walking distance.

    Disliked:

There were issues with the water supply while we were there which led to periods when you had to wait to refill. Site appears to be directly under the flight path for Gatwick and the aircraft noise was obtrusive at times .

The view was good and the site staff came around at various times to see if you were okay and needed anything (fire wood, beer etc). As this site is near Gatwick Airport then expect plane noise or move to another site. At £12 a night I thought this was well priced and would return again. A thumbs up from us both.

    Disliked:

Not exactly a dislike. The addition of showers would be good even if they were basic but the lack of these didn't bother us. We had our own car powered shower and tent so no problem.

A rustic, remote-feel campsite, in the middle of the Surrey Hills. 28/08/2017

Exceptionally relaxing. They do not "book tents to the hilt" we had about 300 feet of space to the nearest tent next to us. The views are awesome. There is a pub within walking distance, if you need to eat out. Great for children. The owners Graham and Sally are very respectful everyone should have a peaceful nights sleep - so they leave printed messages around the site for you to text / call them if inconsiderate campers break the "tranquillity rule".

Sally visits the campers in the evening offering a fire pit and wood to rent. At £10 for the lot its a great snip, adding a real wow feel to the experience.

Remember to pack biodegradable soap for washing. As you wash dishes and all, where you pitch. You could not get a more rustic, remote feel campsite anywhere in the middle of the Surrey Hills.

    Disliked:

You can hear the aircraft overhead so I went with ear plugs. But my partner slept beautifully throughout our stay. I would say it's a very small price to pay, when you consider the sheer space, views and calmness of the site. It's everything we could have hoped for. Very few rules, camps where you like and choose from the acres of space.

Also, as there are no showers, the campsite attracts a certain camper who values space, views and tranquillity above all else. We did not see the "bucket and spade brigade" from Friday to Monday of the this very hot August bank holiday. However, a good towel wash is again a small price to pay for this genuinely 'remote' camping experience.

Local attractions

Make Lingfield village your first stop when you leave the farm, to amble around the sixteenth and eighteenth century buildings as part of a Surrey history tour that can also take in the Old Mill windmill an hour’s walk from Osney, and Leeds Castle, Penshurst Place and Hever Castle reachable from a quick trip in the car.

Also recommended is saying ‘Oh yes’ to Chartwell, Winston Churchill’s family home, where the kids can muck around in the Marycot playhouse built for the youngest Churchill daughter.

The kids will also go gaga for Godstone Farm & Playbarn in the Surrey hills, where littlies can help to feed the pigs and ducks, pet the rabbits and learn how to properly groom a pony before clambering on the tractors and trains, tackling the zip slides and getting lost in the mazes.

The British Wildlife Centre is recommended for bigger litties into their animals, as it has over 40 different native species to spot and events including keeper talks and photography workshops.

Other attractions in the area include Lingfield Park Racecourse, chuffing along in the countryside on the Bluebell Railway or getting active with countryside walks, sailing, kayaking, golf and fishing all nearby.
