General

  • Woodland site high on Kent's Downs
  • Next to Kent County Showground and 10 minutes from Maidstone
  • Modern toilet and shower block, shop and fresh bread baked daily

Oftentimes, when the kids are running you ragged, a holiday sounds very much Oak-ay. So it's splendid that all sorts of stuff is soothing about Scragged Oak Caravan Park high on Kent's chalkland North Downs, run by very hospitable Jan and Harry and managed by the Kent County Agricultural Society.

Scragged Oak is right next to the events and shows of the Kent County Showground, in a woodland setting in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It's a 10-minute drive to Maidstone; about 13 miles to the sea, and a quick drive to some of Kent's most oaky-dokey attractions like the castles of Leeds and Rochester.

The toilet and shower block is newly built and has free hot water; the site also has a launderette, waste disposal points and a shop selling essentials. And yet another soothing Scragged Oak fact? The newly-installed bread oven will have you welcomed with fresh baked goods every morning of your stay.

Excellent site with clean facilities, very friendly staff and good pitches. We were lucky enough to arrive just after a bank holiday, so it was lovely and quiet. The road noise (which we expected so close to the main road) was minimal. Very dog friendly location and staff. Great walks. Excellent first stop on our way from the continent further into the UK.

    Disliked:

Wifi from (close to) our pitch could be better, but that is the case with virtually all camp sites in my experience.

Friendly staff. Clean well maintained facilities. Fresh baked croissants and pain au chocolat from reception every morning. Convenient for ferries. secure at night. No problem coming back late (use overnight carpark outside barrier). Lovely scenery. Flat well drained pitches.

    Disliked:

Leaving site, busy a249 road to cross if turning towards m20 motorway, poor visibility as near crest of hill. safer and easier in daytime to turn left and turn round at roundabout further up. Ok at night as you can see if headlights approaching.

Directions

We are just off the A249, within 2 miles of the M20 (Junction 7) and 5 miles off the M2 (Junction 5).

The best postcode to follow using a satnav is ME14 3HB as using our postcode takes you on a longer route.

Heading from the M20 Junction 7, drive along the A249 to the top of Detling Hill. As you approach the top you will pass a layby and a sign for Bredhurst. Turn left along the road to Bredhurst; this is Scragged Oak Road. The campsite is 500 yards along the road on the left marked with a large green sign.

Please do not turn up Pilgrims Way.

Local attractions

Scragged Oak Caravan Park is in prime position to traverse the best of Kent's countryside, coast, castles and well-known gardens – with Essex and its coast easily accessible too to the north.

If you're here for a very soothing hol indeed and don't fancy travelling too far/at all, the Kent County Showground showcases the best of the county all year round, especially in the farming and agriculture displays each June in the Kent County Show. (You might see the BBC Countryfile team there at some point too.)

Plenty of pedalling and perambulating opps are around the North Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, such as the 153-mile route of the North Downs National Trail through from Farnham to Canterbury, passing the White Cliffs of Dover. This takes in the 119-mile Pilgrims' Way, the supposed route of Thomas Becket from Winchester to Canterbury Cathedral.

Elsewhere in Kent, loads is on all year round in the 500 acres of parkland and formal gardens at lovely Leeds Castle, like free falconry displays, play areas, special events and making one's way intrepidly out of the castle maze.

Also see Rochester Castle, on the east bank of the Medway, for its twelfth century keep and stacks of historical info: the castle was sacked during the Peasants' Revolt, held for Henry III against the barons, and besieged (also because of barons) by bad King John.

Must see

  • Leeds Castle (4.3 miles)
  • The Historic Dockyard Chatham (6.7 miles)
  • Rochester Cathedral (6.8 miles)

National Trust

  • Stoneacre (3.5 miles)
  • Cobham Wood and Mausoleum (9.4 miles)
