General

  • Family-run and friendly site within a mile of Lydd
  • Fishing lakes and nature trails on site; watersports next door
  • Well maintained showers and toilets, washing-up hut and shop

What do you reckon about pitching up at an amiable and family-friendly place with fishing on site – and a watersports centre right next door? Land a stay at Romney Marsh's Herons Park, a family-run and friendly site welcoming guests (and dogs) for Kent-based stays.

Juniors are most welcome too – and if your small sort isn't enamoured with fishing or watersports, you'll likely catch their interest with a mention of the go-karting circuit also next door; the beach at Camber Sands within five miles or the critters of Port Lympne Wild Animal Park within ten or so miles… The Herons Park team can supply info on bike hire and local hikes too.

The park has fairly level, marked out grass pitches, a toilet and shower block updated in 2016, a chemical waste point and waste disposal bins within the camping field, and a small shop stocking camping staples such as firewood, disposable barbecues, some boozy drinks and the essential marshmallows. Firepits are on site for guests' use, but please note these are allocated on a first come, first serve basis. Barbecues are allowed on all pitches.

If you're here for the angling, you can add a fishing pass to your stay as an extra. (You'll need a current fishing licence if you want to fish two rods; pick one up at the post office.)

The town of Lydd and the nearest offsite shop are within a mile.

Good basic site, could be cleaner. Perfect for a short stay. 20/08/2017

Good sized pitches, many with fences between them to separate you from other tents/camper vans, quiet location, toilets and washing up hut near to all tents, flat ground. Good sized fridge freezer to use.

    Disliked:

Toilet floors were always wet due to the showers, during our stay there was a hot water problem so could only use the disabled shower which caused queues and this shower would only adjust to boiling hot or freezing cold, so many spiders (over 20) in cobwebs in washing up hut - only needs a dust! Website said charging facilities - there is one plug socket for all campers to share if you don't pay for electrical hook up. Campsite didn't have jump leads for when car battery goes flat - during our stay two cars had flat batteries in one day!

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. The problem with the hot water was an isolated incident that was out of our control as the boiler had a problem, which was remedied by the same afternoon. I do apologise for this but we were unable to get anything done any sooner as we did all we could. The power point in the washing up hut is an additional benefit for our customers that we obviously do not charge for so we feel one power point is adequate as we do have 14 pitches with hook-up if it's required. We do indeed have jump leads, so I apologise that you weren't offered to use them- i'll investigate what happened there, however- we do not have to provide them so seems a bit unfair to mention? I apologise again for the spiders, I will get the hoover out. Once again, I am disappointed yet another person has not raised the issues during their stay so that we have the opportunity to put things right. Your comments will be taken on board. Kind regards Hannah & Liam

Friendly nice people. Clean showers and toilets and a well stocked shop. Very quiet most of the time.

    Disliked:

We did have a fly past of a helicopter quite late at night. Some fellow campers had visitors who had their car engines running for a few hours while we tried to sleep.

If you do return to us please call us on the duty mobile if you have any disturbance from fellow campers at night as we will come out to address the problem. Once again, thank you for staying! The very peaceful site has staff that are both friendly and helpful. The toilet and shower block is cleaned many times during the day. The comments for the site by Lisa P are unwarranted. I was there the same time. I didn't witness any loud campers. Yes, there is a gocart track nearby but is no louder than your neighbour mowing their lawn. There is a great washing up area that also has a fridge that you can use. Our pitch was with an electric hook up. It was a well maintained site, run by great people. Full credit to you and thank you for a fantastic time for me and my family.

Nice large pitch. Amazing staff, did all they could to help out.
Excellent facilities - washing up hut and showers with hot water every time also kept really clean.
Fire pits available and fire wood on site, nice touch.

    Disliked:

The noise from the karting track right next door. Didn't realise how close it actually was. Track only runs during the day though and only on dry days (as far as I could tell).

From the manager...

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a review! I am also pleased that despite the kart track being next door this did not affect your overall rating of 10! We look forward to welcoming you back. Kind regards Hannah

I would not recommend this site to anyone. 01/08/2017

I liked the fact that it was flat to pitch the tent on and that each of the pitches had a small fence dividing each pitch.

    Toilets and showers were clean.

    Disliked:

The shop wasn't open and there was no one to talk too.

The showers were covered with cobwebs and rather large spiders.

Because the site was flat the wind howled across, which caused us great problems in both pitching up the tent and taking it back down again. The site could do with some more wind breakers..trees etc.

There is a Go-kart track right next door which was very noisy.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. I can see that you stayed Thursday-Sunday, the shop was open all three days- Friday from 9:30-6pm and Saturday from 9:30-7pm Thursday was more sporadic as we do have a function approaching in the venue- Thursday was a quiet day for campers so I do apologise but we cannot man the shop all day when we don't have many customers, the mobile number on the door can be rung in the event of requiring something from the shop and the washing up hut has leaflets/local information accessible 24hrs a day. The Romney Marsh is very flat so yes the wind can be unexpected, unfortunately we will not be planting additional trees, etc in between the pitches as we would have to stop allowing fire pits due to the increased safety risks. We are one of the few sites that allow fire pits so we would not look to change this. We thank you for your feedback, despite feeling that 2/10 is rather an insult to the hard work we put into our small, family run site. The kart track is next door, yes which is acknowledged on our listing. I am pleased you at least found our toilets/showers clean. Kind regards Hannah

Nice site, location rubbish 31/07/2017

Nice site, clean facilities, field nice.

    Disliked:

Be aware views not great, you can see Dungeness power station, electric pylons surround the site, travel through an industrial area to get to site. Go-Kart next door, very noisy - although this stops in the afternoon. Large group took over, playing loud music early am until late pm!

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. I am pleased that you found us a nice, clean site. In regards to our immediate surroundings I can not change this but do feel that you have perhaps only focused on the blots on the landscape and rather overlooked the many lakes teaming with wildlife, horses grazing, sheep in the neighbouring field and amazing sunsets that we have here. The rustic charm of the Romney Marsh isn't for everyone, I fully understand this- but I do feel "Location rubbish" is rather a rude comment to make given that you can visit so many places within a 10-15 minute drive and it's also the place I choose to live with my family. If only you'd highlighted the noise nuisance the large group were making I would have responded day/night to address them and put a stop to the noise (all campers are given my mobile number on their check in sheets) As a side note, I would just like to address the electric pylons that pass by the park and continue to your home to provide you power to submit this review today! (They have to go somewhere) Kind regards Hannah

Local attractions

A go-karting circuit and a watersports centre are right next door to Heron Park, each with a shop and with expert tuition and courses available for visitors.

The Port Lympne Wild Animal Park, an award-winning reserve set over 600 acres near Hythe, is also recommended if you're on hol with the offspring, as is the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway steaming along for 13 and a half miles from Hythe to the National Nature Reserve of Dungeness. Lathe Farm at New Romney and the Rare Breeds Farm at Ashford should also be popular picks.

For beaches, clamber the dunes or go kite buggying at Camber Sands, the only sand dune system in East Sussex, and tackle more fishing (for mackerel) at Dymchurch, like Camber Sands also a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its insect and plant life. Fish, chips and Kent coast views can all be had at the Dungeness headland.

Several bike routes are nearby, including the National Cycle Network 2 running through Lydd on its Romney Marsh route from Hythe to Rye; along the four or so miles of the Royal Military Canal, and circular routes around the marsh from New Romney or Snargate.

The cobbled streets and afternoon teas of ancient Rye are about ten miles from the site.
