General

  • Friendly site easily accessible via the M20 and M2
  • A 10-minute drive to the seaside resort of Leysdown
  • On the outskirts of Minster village

An island base in southeast England ten minutes' drive from sands and seaside resort: all is prepared for you and the crew at Plough Leisure Caravan Park on Kent's Isle of Sheppey – and it's all easily accessible via the M20 and M2.

The park is on the outskirts of the large village of Minster, home of a Saxon Abbey and its Gatehouse Museum, and a short drive from Sheppey's main seaside resort of Leysdown with its sandy beaches and six family amusement arcades. The Shellness section of the Swale National Nature Reserve is around here too, along with skinny dipping for the stout hearted at Swale naturist beach.

On-site facilities at Plough include a playground and a field for ball games; for the essentials, there's a toilet and shower block, an outdoor washing-up area, a launderette and a chemical toilet disposal point.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Good campsite with friendly staff 25/09/2017

The park was easy to find (I had my concerns as some reviews said the sat nav doesn't take you there).
The owner Andy was really pleasant and helpful, giving us directions to the nearby Morrison's.
We had an electric tent pitch, it was close to the toilet and shower block so we didn't have too far to walk in the night.
We did have some trouble getting the tent pegs in as some patches if the ground were very hard so we broke/bent a few pegs. I wouldn't recommend plastic pegs.
Some reviews have said you need to take your own soap and toilet roll, whilst there was no soap in the dispensers, there is a notice up saying toilet rolls are available free of charge.
The toilets and showers probably do need updating, but they were clean enough and what you would expect, after all this is a campsite and not a five star hotel.
There is a field and children's park close to the pitches so you can keep an eye on the kids.
The campsite visitors do not have access to the swimming pool but this is stated on the website that it is only for the static caravan owners.
We probably will return next time we are in Kent.

Pitch site was clean - no rubbish
Owner was pleasant & friendly to talk to

    Disliked:

Visited bank holiday - really disappointing stay.
Next to busy road and building site. Attached to caravan site - children from caravans very unpleasant and torment campers - our kids learnt nasty vile swear words from them, rode their bikes through our camp & stole & broke kids toys.
Loud & noisy campers - no noise after 10pm rule does not apply to all apparently!! Toilet & showers very cramped and very dirty. Would be nice if cleaner went in at least twice a day - once in morning & evening to wash out showers and clean floor & toilet bowels.
1 single tap for washing up for whole campsite (over 100 campers when we visited)
Advertised with swimming pool but campers not allowed to use! Only residents from campsite can use it!
Tents pitched around football pitch so kids had to be careful with ball etc - not campers fault, this is where the owner told them to pitch.
    Whole site very overcrowded
We will definitely not be revisiting.

At this park, they had a large area for the children to play at, and had a large green area for the dogs. Mostly, i enjoyed the nice beach near by.

    Disliked:

However, a playing area for kids, had tents around so the children had to be careful when playing with balls etc. The large area for the dogs was very far away from the tents and caravan and the shop had very over prised ice-cream. In addition, there website is very miss-leading. As it said on the website that we had access to all facility's. However little dd we know that we were not eligible to go into the swimming pool (and this was one of the main attraction), as we were tourists. This was a massive disappoint as it did not say anything about not being able to swim on there website. Furthermore, the pitches were very tight. You are meant to have at least 3 meters around the caravan and awning. However, we had very little space around us, and so this is very unsafe. There was also only one washing up area and this obviously made it very irritating as there was always a massive queue always. As well as all this, the showers were very cramped and dirty.

Lovely welcome from Angela and Andy. We were first time campers so not sure what to expect at first. It is a great site with lots of trees and you can hear the chirping of birds. For city dwellers this was a lovely escape.
There are two showers in the women's loos and two in the men's. I enjoyed my showers as they were lovely and hot.
There is access to water taps with separate taps for drinking water and washing up station.
There is also a waste water disposal point.
There is a playground for kids and a big football pitch to have a kick around etc and we found time to play with our rounders set which we had brought with us.
Rules are in place so people can sleep with a request that loud music and noise needs to be turned down at 10pm.
We had a electric pitch which made use of for our portable fridge and kettle and were able to charge our phones.
Some pitches are in direct sunlight and some in the shade. Over the bank holiday weekend there was an equal balance between campers with tents and those with caravàns.
The site office is usually manned by Angela during the day who is very friendly and helpful.
You can buy ice creams from here if you need to cool down.
Needless to say if we ever go to the Isle of Sheppey again we would return!

Really Friendly staff. Answered any questions and gave recommendations as to where to visit. Easy check in. Clean touring site, no litter on ground and not the usual tent pegs left around to puncture tyres.

    Disliked:

Although there is a quite after 10pm rule, there was unfortunately one loud mouth Family (pink tee pee tent over by fence) with a foul mouthed male who wanted to make as much noise as possible. It wasn't so much the noise as the swearing. If he chooses to use that language (cunt/fuck) for every other word in front of his own kids that's fine. But other Families are not going to want that. I think a foul mouthed rule would be nice.

A suggestion that if you don't want football being played by your tent to not pitch near the pitch.

More showers would be good, as two showers was not enough. Didn't bother showering on my second morning.

Club house would be really nice.

Directions

Plough Leisure caravan park Plough Road Minster on Sheppey, which is conveniently placed on the isle of Sheppey in north east Kent. With the completion of the new fixed crossing makes the island very accessible from the M20 and M2 motorways.

There is a train station in the nearby town of Sheerness, which is conveniently situated next to the bus station. The bus stop is approximately a 5-minute walk from Plough Leisure.

Local attractions

Start off in popular seaside town Leysdown-on-Sea for beachy days punctuated by sugary doughnuts and a fish supper or two, then make it your mission to see the nature and landscapes of Sheppey before driving off-isle into the county of Kent.

The meadows and waterways of nearby Elmley National Nature Reserve are tiptop for watching birds, insects, mammals, lizards and amphibians – and the sunrises and sunsets are pretty spectacular here too. (Give the reserve a call before setting off to check seasonal opening times.)

Between Minster and Sheerness, Barton's Point Coastal Park covers 40 acres of wide open space popular for canalside walks, cycling and kite flying, and fishing, sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and canoeing on its lake. Themed open days and funfairs are held in summer and a play area, café and picnic area are also around.

Around Kent, travel along to Canterbury Cathedral, guided River Stour tours and the Canterbury Tales attraction at the county capital, 40 minutes from Plough Leisure Caravan Park, and to the gorillas, lions, elephants and more of nearby Howletts Wild Animal Park and the Port Lympne Wild Animal Experience. Howletts Wild Animal Park also has a treetop challenge for your own little critters to tackle.

Kent's rural heritage is nicely covered at Kent Life in Maidstone, a family attraction with hands-on activities, play areas, tractor rides and animals to hold and feed.
