General

  • Family-run park with spacious pitching areas
  • A couple of miles from Sandown Bay and Shanklin
  • Big family bathroom and tiled amenities block with spacious showers

Old Barn Touring Park is named after its Grade II-listed thatched barn at the park entrance, now used as a games room and TV room for rainy days or lazy hours. It’s a family-run park with pitches all set in a number of small areas secluded by hedges and with only a handful of pitches per spot. A communal patio has free wifi.

Once heading off site, there’s a bus running from Newport to Ryde within five minutes’ walk of the park, and the sandy beaches of Sandown Bay and Shanklin are within a couple of miles.

Elsewhere on site there’s a tiled amenities block with spacious showers, an outdoor play area for the under-eights, a big family bathroom and a reception area with info on things to do on the Isle of Wight. There’s no food shop, but the site sells camping and Calor gas and has ice pack freezing, and two supermarkets are just down the road.

The Old Barn team can arrange ferries for guests: let them know using the 'special requests' when you book.

Friendly, clean site and reasonably priced. 05/09/2017

Very friendly and hassle free check in, with the Wardens. Overall a nice quiet site with a pub called the Merrie Garden that serves food and local ales about 1/2 mile away - take a torch and turn left out the site - use the footpath (divided from the road by a hedge). There is also a large supermarket in the same direction, just before the pub. Slight road noise from the main road but this didn't bother me - it was also nice to see the small planes taking off from the nearby airport. Good electric hookup (13amp), good TV signal where I was and clean, hot showers (20p lasted I think about 3 minutes - I actually prefer that to constantly pushing the button down when you have shampoo in your eyes). Good to see recycling facilities etc as well, located next to the clean elsan point for chemical toilets (which is under cover for rainy days). Wardens very helpful and I am sure if you needed any information on the Isle of Wight they would be more than happy to help. I just needed a place to recharge mine and the van's batteries for a couple of nights so was happy enjoying the campsite and local pub. There is a barn with pool tables etc as well which I didn't use. Overall a good, reasonably priced site and around a 1/3rd of the price of some of the larger sites with big entertainment complexes on the Isle - being a single traveller I couldn't justify paying nearly £150 for 3 nights at some of the other sites!

    Disliked:

Not a dislike just useful information as most grass pitched sites are the same - some pitches are on a slight hill so if travelling in a motorhome would recommend taking levelling ramps and a long(ish) hose to refill the water if you need to do so without moving the van (as with most sites unless you go to a site with serviced pitches). No drive over drain to empty grey waste but this is common with most sites in the UK, again not a dislike for this site but it would be worth taking a container to empty your grey waste - I've just spent a month in France so was spoilt with the facilities for motorhomes there!

Site subdivided into smaller pitches by hedges, so a sheltered pitch and not overlooked. Plenty of very hot water for washing up.

    Disliked:

Showers. If you were the only person using them then the shower was passable, more than one user and the pressure dropped. The water temperature was not adjustable and set cooler than I would have liked.

Directions

From Newport, take the A3056. The park is half a mile on the left after the Apse Heath mini roundabout. Look out for the thatched barn as you come down the road.

Local attractions

The Isle of Wight has history, nature, dinosaurs, museums, thirteen award-winning beaches, theme parks and more to explore: start off at nearby Sandown Bay for amusements on the pier and to begin a lope around the 67-mile long Isle of Wight Coast Path to Shanklin and from there to Ventnor.

The route takes you past Shanklin Chine, a coastal ravine that’s the oldest tourist attraction on the Isle of Wight; find out its history at the heritage centre, watch the red squirrels from the chine hide or wander through the woodland at dusk during summer when it’s lit up.

Blackgang Chine, six miles from Ventnor, is now an eccentric amusement park with rides, lifesized plastic dinosaurs and rollercoasters in its Victorian garden setting – and is the favourite Isle of Wight attraction of Harry Potter actor Rupert Grint.

Blackgang Chine’s sister site, Robin Hill theme park just outside Newport, has more rides, a wooden maze, toboggan run and an adventure playground; less excitable types can go to the park’s Combley Roman villa, flutter around the butterfly garden or spot squirrels on the Red Squirrel Safari. The Needles Park on the west of the island at Alum Bay has shopping, beach chairlift and a 4D cinema.

Animal enthusiasts have loads to pick from: tigers and other big cats at the Isle of Wight Zoo, over 200 rare and exotic species at Amazon World Zoo Park and the biggest wildlife park on the island, Seaview Wildlife Encounter. (And even though it deals with the extinct, special mention should also be given to the animated dinos at Dinosaur Isle, partly because it’s only two miles from The Old Barn and partly just because.)

For history, the seaside palace of Osborne House was the island hideaway of Queen Victoria and has her own private beach – and bathing machine – now open to the public.

There’s also Carisbrooke Castle, where Charles I fled to after escaping captivity at Hampton Court and where he was banged up again by Colonel Hammond: dress up in Civil War clothes here, have a look at the Charles I museum or have a game of bowls on the same green used by the unpopular king.
