  • Family-run park with spacious pitching areas
  • A couple of miles from Sandown Bay and Shanklin
  • Reduced ferry price for customers
Old Barn Touring Park is named after its Grade II-listed thatched barn at the park entrance, now used as a games room for rainy days or lazy hours. It’s a family-run park with pitches all set in a number of small areas secluded by hedges and with only a handful of pitches per spot. A communal patio has free wifi. Once heading off site, there’s a bus running from Newport to Ryde within five minutes’ walk of the park, and the sandy beaches of Sandown Bay and Shanklin are within a couple of miles. Elsewhere on site there’s a tiled amenities block with spacious showers, an outdoor play area for the under-eights, a big family bathroom and a reception area with info on things to do on the Isle of Wight. There’s no food shop, but the site sells camping and Calor gas and has ice pack freezing, and two supermarkets are just down the road. The Old Barn team (a friendly and helpful gang made up of Terry, Emma and Gary) can arrange ferries for guests at a reduced price: let them know using the 'special requests' when you book.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: We had initially booked to have an electric camping pitch but with the horrific wet weather we upgraded to a camping pod. We were allowed to pitch our gazebo in between the two pods (2 adults and 2 children in one and 2 adults and 1 child in the other) so that we could have a communal space for meals, spending time together and when the children went to bed. The campsite was basic but very clean. I loved that, even though the toilet block was dated, there was showers with doors and a space to dress- NO SHOWER CURTAINS! Also, the sinks were cubbies with lockable doors for privacy. Usual price for the showers of 20p and ran long enough for a good few rinses of long hair and get scrubbed clean. The hairdryer actually did some drying too. Pods were spotless, kettle is always welcoming. Emma made it clear where the boggy areas were so that we didn’t get stuck in the cars and advised where we could park. The campsite was quiet and accessible and a great location.

Disliked: I can see that the campsite owners are making improvements where they can from what must have been a very run down site. Areas could be tidied up such as the brook and maybe the stiffness of the taps but it is visible they have made changes and continue to do so.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Customer service was the very best. I was warned about the soggy ground due to the appalling weather, told how best to park to enable towing off if necessary. 5 minutes into the visit, got bogged down and towed out as promised. I felt like an idiot, but the owner happily towed me out onto the roadway, with smiles and banter. The site was well laid out, and the facilities were clean and in good order. The 20p showers were just right, and long enough for me to shower and rinse and dry off before it stopped. The site was like just about every site in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, in that it was very wet, but the hosts could not be more welcoming and cheerful. Good value site and reasonably priced hookup, I can't wait to return when the weather improves.

Disliked: The weather, which was nobodies fault, not even the Romans.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Central location for getting around

Disliked: We arrived at 5.30pm as stipulated when we booked, so we had to call a number. The gentleman that came to check us in welcomed us with the comment “another VW camper, exactly what I didn’t want to see” despite the fact we made the booking as such. As he continue to speak, it transpired it was due to the heavy rain and flooding, and previous customers ripping up his campground as it was so wet. We had tried to contact them earlier in the day by email and phone to check the latest situation. Had the rain been such a problem, perhaps they should have called their customers and cancelled their bookings rather than make us feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. Site is right on the road side, a lot of noise from traffic. There are 2 showers each, and they are 20p for roughly 4 mins. They are clean enough, but in need of a refurb. They had painted their tiles, and paint was flaking everywhere. We stayed two nights and by the second day only one of the four toilets had loo roll in the ladies.

From the manager: We are sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your stay. Unfortunately we can not do anything about complaints once you have left the site. If you had spoken to us while you were here we could have rectified the situation at the time. We hope this doesn't put you off visiting the Island again as it is truly a special place.

Local attractions

The Isle of Wight has history, nature, dinosaurs, museums, award-winning beaches, theme parks and more to explore: start off at nearby Sandown Bay for amusements on the pier and to begin a lope around the 67-mile long Isle of Wight Coast Path to Shanklin and from there to Ventnor. Blackgang Chine, six miles from Ventnor, is now an eccentric amusement park with rides, lifesized plastic dinosaurs and rollercoasters in its Victorian garden setting. Blackgang Chine’s sister site, Robin Hill theme park, just outside Newport, has more rides, a wooden maze, toboggan run and an adventure playground; less excitable types can go to the park’s Combley Roman villa, flutter around the butterfly garden or spot squirrels on the Red Squirrel Safari. Animal enthusiasts have loads to pick from: tigers and other big cats at the Isle of Wight Zoo, over 200 rare and exotic species at Amazon World Zoo Park and the biggest wildlife park on the island, Seaview Wildlife Encounter. For history, the seaside palace of Osborne House was the island hideaway of Queen Victoria and has her own private beach – and bathing machine – now open to the public. There’s also Carisbrooke Castle, where Charles I fled to after escaping captivity at Hampton Court and where he was banged up again by Colonel Hammond: dress up in Civil War clothes here or have a game of bowls on the same green used by the unpopular king.
