Bikes relaxing after a hard day out

General

  • Family-run park with spacious pitching areas
  • A couple of miles from Sandown Bay and Shanklin
  • Big family bathroom and tiled amenities block with spacious showers

Old Barn Touring Park is named after its Grade II-listed thatched barn at the park entrance, now used as a games room for rainy days or lazy hours. It’s a family-run park with pitches all set in a number of small areas secluded by hedges and with only a handful of pitches per spot. A communal patio has free wifi.

Once heading off site, there’s a bus running from Newport to Ryde within five minutes’ walk of the park, and the sandy beaches of Sandown Bay and Shanklin are within a couple of miles.

Elsewhere on site there’s a tiled amenities block with spacious showers, an outdoor play area for the under-eights, a big family bathroom and a reception area with info on things to do on the Isle of Wight. There’s no food shop, but the site sells camping and Calor gas and has ice pack freezing, and two supermarkets are just down the road.

The Old Barn team can arrange ferries for guests: let them know using the 'special requests' when you book.

The site was very clean, well kept pitches, plenty of room for the dog walks. There was a charge of 20p for showers, but plenty of hot water for washing up in an enclosed area. The site is well planned out, each area had a few pitches which were divided up by hedges. We had an electric hook up.
This site is ideal for touring the island.
There is a new Morrisons food store three minuets from the site. Plenty of choice for food shopping, and an added bonus there is a cafe serving nice meals.
    Enjoyed our stay.

    Disliked:

Had not been to this site before, but it was next to the Isle of Wight light aircraft airport, we had small aircraft flying overhead.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review. Sorry about the airport but on a good note, they do wonderful tours over the Island.
Hope you'll stay with us again.

Loved the exclusive pitch which was very private and surrounded by hedges. The facilities were really good and the owner was really pleasant and helpful. Great location and not overcrowded. I would definitely recommend this campsite.

    Disliked:

What I should have mentioned to the owner but didn't (so my bad) at the time is that they have a neighbour near our pitch (51) who plays loud bass music in the evening. They played it till about 11:30 or midnight. I don't know if its just me as I am very sensitive to noises but it did get a bit irritating. Glad that someone enjoys their music but not everyone has the same taste. I just like a bit of piece and quiet when I'm camping. I'm not sure that you'd hear it on the other side of the campsite. We also kept getting woken up by lorries reversing at 5am again on the land on the otherside of the hedge by our pitch. Obviously nothing anyone can do about that but just flagging for very light sleepers like me. My husband slept through everything.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review. Unfortunatley we can not change the delivery times for the yard next to us but we appreciate you bringing it to our attention.

Noisy, busy road late into the night and from early morning. Difficult to sleep or even have a conversation on our roadside pitch.

From the manager...

We're sorry you didn't enjoy your stay with us. We are looking into sound proofing fencing along the road side to try to cut some of the noise out so that you for bringing that to our attention. We hope you reconsider and stay with us again in the future.

The large pitch, the big and clean shower / washrooms / washup areas, the open area right next door to let the dogs have a run, the friendly and helpful couple running the place.... everything really!!
Perfectly placed near (10 minute drive) from Shanklin and Sandown beaches and 3 or more supermarkets within a few mins drive.
Very close to Sandown airport - so lots of light aircraft taking off over us.... but never early morning or late evening though..... we liked seeing the planes and in fact went to visit the airport.... but if you’re particularly noise sensitive you might not appreciate them!

Local attractions

The Isle of Wight has history, nature, dinosaurs, museums, thirteen award-winning beaches, theme parks and more to explore: start off at nearby Sandown Bay for amusements on the pier and to begin a lope around the 67-mile long Isle of Wight Coast Path to Shanklin and from there to Ventnor.

The route takes you past Shanklin Chine, a coastal ravine that’s the oldest tourist attraction on the Isle of Wight; find out its history at the heritage centre, watch the red squirrels from the chine hide or wander through the woodland at dusk during summer when it’s lit up.

Blackgang Chine, six miles from Ventnor, is now an eccentric amusement park with rides, lifesized plastic dinosaurs and rollercoasters in its Victorian garden setting – and is the favourite Isle of Wight attraction of Harry Potter actor Rupert Grint.

Blackgang Chine’s sister site, Robin Hill theme park just outside Newport, has more rides, a wooden maze, toboggan run and an adventure playground; less excitable types can go to the park’s Combley Roman villa, flutter around the butterfly garden or spot squirrels on the Red Squirrel Safari. The Needles Park on the west of the island at Alum Bay has shopping, beach chairlift and a 4D cinema.

Animal enthusiasts have loads to pick from: tigers and other big cats at the Isle of Wight Zoo, over 200 rare and exotic species at Amazon World Zoo Park and the biggest wildlife park on the island, Seaview Wildlife Encounter. (And even though it deals with the extinct, special mention should also be given to the animated dinos at Dinosaur Isle, partly because it’s only two miles from The Old Barn and partly just because.)

For history, the seaside palace of Osborne House was the island hideaway of Queen Victoria and has her own private beach – and bathing machine – now open to the public.

There’s also Carisbrooke Castle, where Charles I fled to after escaping captivity at Hampton Court and where he was banged up again by Colonel Hammond: dress up in Civil War clothes here, have a look at the Charles I museum or have a game of bowls on the same green used by the unpopular king.

Must see
