Old Barn Touring Park

Not that we’re overly competitive, but we reckon one of the best things about the Isle of Wight’s Old Barn Touring Park is its giant chess and draughts on the patio, for publicly checkmating your family members on a sunny day. (There’s wifi on the patio too, so if you’re stumped for moves you can speedily look online for the sneakiest strategies, all under the guise of ‘looking up a nice restaurant for later’.)

Old Barn Touring Park is named after its Grade II-listed thatched barn at the park entrance, now used as a games room and TV room for rainy days or for solitary hours when the family ostracises you for cheating at draughts. It’s a family-run park and has pitches for tents, tourers, motorhomes and trailer tents, all set in a number of small areas secluded by hedges and with only a handful of pitches per spot. Once heading off site, there’s a bus running from Newport to Ryde within five minutes’ walk of the park, and the sandy beaches of Sandown Bay and Shanklin are within a couple of miles.

Elsewhere on site there’s a tiled loo block with spacious showers, an outdoor play area for the under eights, a big family bathroom and a reception area with info on things to do on the Isle of Wight. There’s no food shop, but the site sells camping and Calor gas and offers ice pack freezing, and there’s a large Morrisons with petrol pumps about half a mile down the road.
