We are the third generation to farm at Locks farm. Grandfather originally took it on as a tenant in 1939 but the land and the herd of Aberdeen Angus are ours now. The Angells have been in nearby Porchfield since 1795 and our farmhouse is like a miniature time capsule of the island; there are Roman remains beneath, it rests on Norman foundation stones, the interior is Tudor whilst the front is Georgian. There is also evidence that our home was burnt down by the French when they sacked nearby Newtown, the old capital, in 1377.

Your tent will be in one of two adjoining fields behind our farmhouse, facing east and west. North and south you are looking towards rolling countryside, a long way from the hustle and bustle of urban life. Less than 100 metres from the tents is a tidal saltwater creek, part of a protected nature reserve where you can see huge bass and mullet lazily swim by when the tide is up. From the farm you can walk along road and path to the sea at Thorness Bay and the sand and shingle Gurnard beach, the perfect spot for admiring boats and watching the world sail by.

Whatever you choose to do, we “caulkheads” (our dialect word for island natives) look forward to welcoming you “oveners” (which is what we call mainland folk) to stay on our farm.
