General

We are the third generation to farm at Locks farm. Grandfather originally took it on as a tenant in 1939 but the land and the herd of Aberdeen Angus are ours now. The Angells have been in nearby Porchfield since 1795 and our farmhouse is like a miniature time capsule of the island; there are Roman remains beneath, it rests on Norman foundation stones, the interior is Tudor whilst the front is Georgian. There is also evidence that our home was burnt down by the French when they sacked nearby Newtown, the old capital, in 1377.

Your tent will be in one of two adjoining fields behind our farmhouse, facing east and west. North and south you are looking towards rolling countryside, a long way from the hustle and bustle of urban life. Less than 100 metres from the tents is a tidal saltwater creek, part of a protected nature reserve where you can see huge bass and mullet lazily swim by when the tide is up. From the farm you can walk along road and path to the sea at Thorness Bay and the sand and shingle Gurnard beach, the perfect spot for admiring boats and watching the world sail by.

Whatever you choose to do, we “caulkheads” (our dialect word for island natives) look forward to welcoming you “oveners” (which is what we call mainland folk) to stay on our farm.

Local attractions

It is fitting that the first Feather Down farm on the Isle of Wight is on the more tranquil western side. Locks Farm could not be better placed to enjoy the best of the island whilst still benefiting from that “land that time forgot” feeling as soon as you step off the ferry. You have a choice of three arrival ports, none of which are more than half an hour’s drive away from the farm but the quickest and prettiest brings you from Lymington in the New Forest to Yarmouth, a stone’s throw away. Cowes and its world-famous August regatta is just five miles away. Bestival is not much further afield. The place may have old world charm but its numerous music festivals also make it very popular with the younger generation.

Alternatively, try the 18th century New Inn at Shalfleet, a cosy pub with an inglenook fireplace and flagstone floors renowned for its locally caught seafood. Alternatively we would be more than happy if you chose just to chill out at our farm. After all, it’s not every day that you get the chance to take your glass of wine in hand of an evening and listen to cuckoos, nightingales and barn owls or see the island’s ubiquitous red squirrels at play.

The spectacular world-famous chalk-stacks of the Needles are also at our end of the island. Osbourne House, Queen Victoria’s permanent home after the death of her beloved Albert, is not far away, neither is Carisbrooke, one of England’s greatest castles. The walk from the farm to Newtown, the island’s capital for 150 years, is also an eerie experience, not to be missed. All that remains is a Jacobean town hall, its busy harbour now stranded on the edge of an estuary.

Ferries to the Isle of Wight leave from Portsmouth, Southampton and Lymington. For more details see www.wightlink.co.uk and www.redfunnel.co.uk.
