General

  • Quiet and rural site a mile and a half from Cowes
  • Fully-equipped holiday homes with outdoor decking
  • Gurnard and Thurness beaches within walking distance

Feeling under the weather? Beneath a cloud of gloom? It's simple to feel sunny-natured on the Isle of Wight, home to plenty of sandy stretches of beach and so nicely compact so that wherever you bunk down on, all the many (many) island attractions will be no more than half an hour away from your pitch.

Many campers come to Cowes when going Wightwards, the island’s main port and where the famous regatta Cowes Week is held each August. This is also where canny islandgoers will find Sunnycott Caravan Park, a quiet and rural family-run site with self-catering caravans, all set out with plenty of space between for maximum privacy.

The park's about a mile and a half from Cowes, with Gurnard and Thurness beaches within walking distance and sailing, mountain bike hire and horse riding all easy to hand nearby.

Sunny cots are in fully-equipped holiday homes with outdoor decking and flatscreen TV. The park has wifi, 24 hour laundry facilities and a shop.

Dogs are welcome; for walkies, a public footpath leads to the beach just yards from Sunnycott, and Parkhurst Forest is within walking distance.

Wifi not clearly advertised. Whilst it didn't say free, we were surprised to pay £10 for 3 days (not owned by caravan park) and only one device could be connected at a time. Just something to bear in mind if you're expecting wifi. This wouldn't put us off staying again tho.

This is a beautiful site in a rural location but near to all facilities easy walk to the beach and local pub.bus stop just outside the site and short car ride to Cowes and Newport. We had a warm friendly welcome from Jenny who gave us a guided tour of the site and caravan. The site has a small shop open 24 hours a day were you leave a list of items you have taken and pay on departure, along with laundry facilities. We were in caravan no 14 and the photos did not due the van justice. It was lovely and spotless nice reassuring smell of bleach. It was full of anything we needed for our stay plenty of good quality cutlery, China and cooking equipment. We enjoyed the views sitting on our balcony. I highly recommend Sunnycott caravan park. We were celebrating our silver wedding and wished we had found the site when our children were small it would have made a perfect base for a family holiday. We will be back again soon.

    Couldn't find shop on site

From the manager...

Hi Mr Redford
We do have a small shop on site, as you checked in at 8.30pm and check in closes at 6pm, we left your keys in reception which is open 24 hrs. In reception was the shop with a fridge stocked with milk, bacon, drinks etc, and shelves stocking cereals, tinned products, and pastas etc. I did not see you the next day as you were out, but i thought you would have seen the shop when you picked up the keys. Also there was a welcome pack in the Caravan, which also explained about the shop, as it is an honesty shop where you help yourself and pay at the end of your stay. Sorry you did not know about this. Hope you enjoyed your stay apart from this.
Kind Regards
Jenny

Drive from the terminal to the traffic lights at the T-junction and turn right and head for Newport. Pass the two filling stations on the outskirts of Newport, then branch right at the lights to join the dual carriageway at the T-junction signposted Cowes.
Go past the hospital on the right and prisons on the left and start to climb the hill. On passing through the pelican crossing take the next left at the post office to Noke Common Road. Carry on until you reach a T-junction, then turn right to a mini-roundabout and take the first left at the sign for Gurnard. This is the start of Rew Street. Go up the hill and the road narrows - past the bungalows on left. Sunnycott is the last property before the field.

Drive from the terminal past the entrance to Osborne House, through Whippingham to the roundabout to join the A3054. Turn right towards Newport and follow the directions above.

From Yarmouth (Wightlink, car ferry):
Drive from the ferry terminal to the roundabout and follow the road to the left out of Yarmouth towards Newport on the A3054. (note 40mph speed limit along this road).
At Shalfleet pass through the single lane traffic lights up the hill, and take the next left-hand turn before the filling station. Go along the winding road through Porchfield village passing the post office and the Sportsman's Rest pub.
Continue along this road for about two miles until a mini-roundabout, then follow the directions above.

Local attractions

Windsurfing, sailing, paragliding, festivals, theme parks…pretty much everything under the sun is handy on the Isle of Wight, and there’s an extensive bus service laid on for visitors who don’t want to take their car around the isle.

One should of course start off at the yachting centre of Cowes, Wight’s main port and where yachting has been famous since the Royal Yacht Squadron moved into Cowes Castle in 1858.

Yachters from all over the world descend on at the start of August each year for famous Cowes Week; if you’re at Cowes at any other time of the year, there are yachty events all year round including regattas, club racing and rallies. Take the chain ferry or floating bridge over the River Medina to East Cowes too – it’s free for foot passengers and cyclists.

If none of this floats your boat, this staggers us, but for time away from the water we suggest shopping in Cowes and East Cowes high streets, looking out for other events like the artisan market and food shows or taking your feet from the chain ferry along the Medina estuary to finish up at the Bargeman’s Rest in Newport.

The Isle of Wight Coastal Path covers 67 miles around the island; there are marked walks from East Cowes to Ryde, Yarmouth, Wooton and Gurnard.

Queen Vicky’s old pad and seaside palace Osborne House is less than three miles from Sunnycott – she and the brood loved the Isle of Wight and Osborne House is where she died in 1901.

There’s a heritage centre at East Cowes, the Classic Boat Museum Gallery and a maritime museum in Cowes library for those who like to see how the ordinary folk lived, and the historical can also dress up in Civil War garb at Carisbrooke Castle less than four miles from Sunnycott – this is where Charles One was nabbed after he fled the mainland. Or meander around the island’s many museums: we’re quite chuffed with the randomness that has a bus museum and a Roman villa both at Newport.

Natch the beach will be hit if the sun’s shining – Shanklin and Sandown should hit the spot as well as nearby Thorness and Gurnard – and there are two theme parks nearby, Blackgang Chine and the Robin Hill theme park.

The ‘Garden Isle’ also has plants and wildlife aplenty, as well as several animal-themed family days out: take the nippers along to the Isle of Wight Zoo, the Amazon World Zoo Park or the Owl and Monkey Haven.
