General

  • Spacious family campsite in the New Forest, set on a 500-acre farm
  • Next to a holiday village with pools, bike hire, restaurants and bars
  • Local pub within two minutes' walk

Friendly Folds Farm Camping in Fordingbridge is fairly fab... for it has miles of cantering, cycling and trekking trails direct from its turf in the heart of the New Forest, and you can bring your own geegee if you have one.

Other fab facts: it's dog-friendly and family-friendly down on the farm, as the team welcomes families with teeny tots, small sorts and canine campers to roam around its safely spacious site, all set in a secluded field away from busy roads and surrounded by woodland and open fields.

Folds Farm's amenities include free hot showers with a changing area, sink and mirror, flushing and well-maintained portaloo style toilets, three water standpipes, dishwashing sinks and free use of a freezer for ice packs – all facilities are lit at night. A breakfast and snack service is available at weekends and on bank holidays.

And another fab fact the fifth (perhaps this should have come first), the local pub is a footling two minutes' walk from the farm and you'll find many more trad New Forest inns within a ten-minute drive. Cheers.

And! The farm is next to Sandy Balls Holiday Village and farm guests are welcome to wander in and use the facilities there, like the heated indoor and outdoor pools, (although there is a charge for these) several play parks, bar and restaurant and bike hire point. A peaceful farm park with a pool and more play in easy proximity? How fab.

Nice site, friendly helpful owners. But needs more toilets. 30/08/2018

In a great location, owners are friendly and helpful. Toilets and showers despite being portaloo’s we’re clean and checked regularly, although after a busy weekend (we stayed Friday-Monday) they were pretty ripe. Nice to have a fire, logs for sale we’re good quality if a little expensive at £7 a smallish bag.
Wood fired Pizza a nice touch on Friday night as well.

    Disliked:

Limited level pitches on this site, one side has level pitches along the hedge line, the rest of the perimeter has sloping pitches, some quite steeply. Middle of field is flat, and as a result people will pitch really close to your tent, like festival close! We were out for a day, came back and our tent was surrounded, couldn’t even park next to it.
Site also seems to attract a lot of “1 nighters” or first time campers, who will have their fire pits scarily close to neighbouring tents, this is due to their being no marked out pitches and everybody wanting to get on the flat part of the field. Those with expensive tents beware!
Also a note on the toilets, there were 9 portaloos around the site, we were there on a quite busy weekend and although they were kept clean they were stomach churningly ripe by the Monday morning, I appreciate they are unlikely to be able to get them emptied at the weekend, but in my view they need double the amount for the number of campers. They were emptied on Monday morning though.
For these reasons we wouldn’t return to this site, still had a lovely weekend though!
Campsite is fairly low cost, we camp a lot, 5+ times a year and just feel there are nicer sites out there.

    A friendly welcome.
Well located for exploring New Forest by bike (road bike in our case) and within 30min drive to the beach at Bournemouth.
Toilet and shower facilities well maintained and kept clean.
Pop up pizza tent on Friday was great idea.

    Disliked:

Pricing given online and over phone was inconsistent.

An enjoyable stay, a "little" pricey for the limited facilities 28/08/2018

Peaceful, friendly owners, fairly quiet into the late evening, facilities were kept clean, "reasonable" pub within 5 minutes walk (Fighting Cocks). Also close (<10 minutes drive) to Fordingbridge which has a small Coop supermarket and where the river is shallow enough for wading (there is also a good playground and an outside splash pool).

The little "on site" tent shop (bacon, eggs, milks, cheese) and ice pack service were useful and the fire pit rental was very nice in the evening (£10 with some wood, you'll likely need more!).

Although there is nothing specific on the site (apart from a rope swing) there is very easy access to the Sandy Balls holiday park if you want more facilities. It's 10 minutes walk, it has a small supermarket, several playgrounds for the kids and a bunch of shops, all of which you are free to use, swimming pool is extra.

On the Friday night a little wood fired pizza "shop" appeared, it seemed to do brisk business all evening so I'm guessing they were good!

    Disliked:

In reality it's a "pop up" campsite so is just a field, don't go expecting any luxuries. The toilets and showers are portable (but to be fair they were kept clean and there was hot water). There was frequently a queue for washing up, there are only 3 sinks (we did go on the August Bank Holiday weekend though so I'm guessing it was busier than normal).

It was pretty expensive given the limited facilities and much of the field isn't flat so I'd suggest getting there early to get the best pitches.

It's a bit of a "free for all" in terms of getting a pitch, there is nothing marked out but generally people were sensible about where they pitched and parked.

Large field in the middle of the forest, lovely walks ... 28/08/2018

Large field in the middle of the forest, lovely walks and wildlife. Lots of space for children to run around and play. The toilets are portaloo's however they were always extremely clean and consistently being topped up with toilet paper (there are no lights in them tho, so take a torch/lantern). They had Friday night Pizza van which was very welcome after arriving and setting up. Really nice touches like sweets on arrival and an ice lolly for the journey home. There are no pitch sizes which worked well for us as we traveled as a group and managed to get ourselves together and have a communal space to sit in. Sandy balls is 5 minutes away (ask for directions - we got lost for about an hour...we saw lots of wildlife tho!)

A good basic site. Clean and spacious. 28/08/2018

A great space for groups, dogs, families. Facilities (toilets, showers and wash areas) were all kept clean throughout our stay. The pub is a very short walk and Sandy Balls isn't too far either. Lots of wild ponies & Donkeys around and various footpaths with great blackberry picking.

    Disliked:

The bath footpath isn't well signposted to Sandy Balls (not the sites fault) so we did spend an hour on what should have been a 5 minute walk (we did see sheep, horses, deer and pheasant so not all bad!)
The lights in the toilets/showers dulled very quickly into our stay so would highly recommend a good torch or lantern for trips.

Facilities were poor, whole site is undulating so most areas not flat, quite expensive

From the manager...

Sorry our site wasn’t for you.

As you will see from numerous other reviews we are a pop up campsite with temparory facilities

We are praised about the cleanliness of our showers and loos.

I suggest in future you try to book at a more permanent site like Sandyballs at £90 per night for a four man tent.

Nice and quiet, dog friendly campsite in a good location within the New Forest for cycling and walking. Rents out fire pits and sells wood and kindling which is always great to sit around with marshmallows! No light pollution.

    Disliked:

A couple of the areas had slopes around the site (we didn’t sleep in those) so would recommend arriving early during the day to get a good spot during busy season as a couple of tents were pitched on an incline when the flat pitches had all been taken.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review.

We do have a pitch where you want policy and obviously on Bank holiday we are busier than normal weekends

Local attractions

Fordingbridge is in a mighty handy Hampshire location, right in the New Forest but not too far a drive to day trips at the Jurassic Coast, Stonehenge and the beaches of Bournemouth and the rest of Dorset. Paultons Family Theme Park – yes, home to a certain pig named Peppa – is about nine miles' trot away.

In the New Forest, many folk like a look at Beaulieu, a very full (and fab) day out around Beaulieu village that includes the National Motor Museum, Palace House and Gardens, Beaulieu Abbey and the World of Top Gear.

Bucklers Hard, part of the Beaulieu estate, was once where many of Nelson's ships were constructed and these days has a small maritime museum and a yachting marina.

East of Beaulieu across the river from Bucklers Hard, famed Exbury Gardens will probably be another full day out, to properly see the rock garden, sundial garden, riverside camellia walk and the blooming big collections of rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias. Plant fans could also check out the collections at Sir Harold Hillier Gardens in Romsey, which have over 42,000 specimens from regions all over the world.

Going towards Dorset and the coast, a drive of less than 15 miles west from Folds Farm will see sand hunters at the beaches of Christchurch; from there, drive further west to Swanage and the start of the fossily fab Jurassic Coast.
