If somewhere has been around long enough to have a mention in the Domesday Book, then that’s a good enough reason as any to pay it a visit. And that’s before we’ve even had a chance to entice you with all our shire talk and praise for the attractions and activities nearby. The town of Fordingbridge in the heart of the New Forest, Hampshire, has come a long way since its Domesday appearance in 1086, known back then simply as Forde, but the market town on the banks of the River Avon still has a traditional English charm that will make historian lovers flock to its streets. You really can’t aForde to miss it. (We couldn’t resist.)

Make Chapelfield, just on the outskirts of Fordingbridge, your base as you venture into the New Forest. This accommodating and friendly little campsite is perfect for families and couples, especially those with a well-behaved pup that wants to explore the wilds of the National Park (just remember to clean up any ‘calling cards’!) - as there’s a forest opening to start your walks, hikes and cycles from just five minutes from the site. No tripping over guy ropes or feeling as though your neighbour may have literally pitched on your porch here either: the roomy plots (min 8m x 8m) are amply spaced so you can enjoy your privacy and sleep like a starfish every night if you please. Spacious enough to roam but still small enough to feel safe - Chapelfield is perfect for campers with kids, who’ll also love the free-roaming ponies, donkeys and cattle just five minutes away.

The excellently maintained portable loos, shower block and washing-up facilities here have plenty of hot water and they’re lit at night time too to make that midnight dash all the easier. Extra amenities to add to the comfort of this well looked after site include a handy freezer for guests to house their ice packs for picnics in the park or ice cubes for Pimms on their pitch.

The supervised reception, right amongst the tents, has staff offering help, info or advice at any time - use their local knowledge to get the most out of your trip. Forgetting something essential? Never fear. The site’s pop-up shop is available on the weekend and bank holidays and there’s a convenience store with an off-licence a 10-minute walk away. Good Pub Guide followers - The Fighting Cocks is just down the road, along with two other pubs, all of which will satisfy whatever your tipple.

With larger holiday parks in the area (some of which you can visit for activities, cycle hire etc), this smaller and simpler little camping delight offers all you need for a quieter getaway with the New Forest.
