General

  • Well-kept, friendly and secluded site minutes from the M25
  • Campfires allowed; firepits on site; discounted 3D archery available
  • On eight acres with 450 acres of woodland and streams to explore

D’oh! If that’s your usual reaction to city hotel prices, give Springfield Park a go instead. It’s just outside London but is within the M25 and has a train link to King's Cross five minutes' drive away: escape the city quickly, head in to see the sights, or stay here cheaply if you're visiting London for business.

Springfield Park is a quiet, tents-only and friendly site and has been designed by its owner to reflect exactly what he’d want from a campsite: he rather handily happens to be a keen and experienced camper, so knows of what he speaks...

Guests here will find a scenic non-commercial setting surrounded by woodland, proper toilets in a well-maintained building (cleaned every hour on the weekends and regularly during the week), campfires allowed, firepits with seating, and archery right on site. There's also a coffee shop which sells coffee, ice cream, soft drinks and essential camping gear.

Springfield is in a secluded setting on eight acres of landscaped grounds with 450 acres of woodland and streams to explore, and is surrounded by trees with a scenic and shallow stream running around the back (look out for the ducklings, geese and swans which often turn up in spring).

The campsite parts of the site are on flat and level grounds, with grass cut twice a week by the two park gardeners to keep everything looking shipshape. There are four separate camping areas to suit different types of guests and keep everyone feeling peaceful: one for parents with young children, one for parents with teenagers, another for adults who want to sleep at a regular time, and the fourth – far, far away – for those who want to sit up a bit later with a cocktail.

Whichever area you pick, you can pick your own pitch, and will be met on arrival to be shown where the facilities and other essentials are, before your tent and kit is loaded into a golf buggy to be taken to your chosen pitch – another nice little touch...

If you're feeling active, the instructor-led archery activities on site are pretty much on target for both adults and kids too: Springfield Park is one of the few sites in the country where guests can try 3D archery, available in the private wooded area and discounted for guests by up to 60% on the normal price.

We really enjoyed our stay at Springfield Park, although only one night. The campsite had good facilities including toilets and a new shower block. The site was beautiful with plenty of secluded areas if you wished one.
This was a hidden gem and as a campsite was very quiet.

    Disliked:

It is very close to the M25 and although during the day the noise isn't an issue, it does spoil the feeling of tranquillity in the evening/night.

Had a great time last weekend camping. So nice to be met promptly by the owner and his handy buggy to move all our stuff to our pitch. We were running late so in a mission to get our tent up before it got dark and that wouldn't have been possible if he hadn't helped us so we are very grateful for that.

The firepits are fantastic, and that was a real highlight for me. The owner was very informative about the area and a nice person to have a chat with. The pitches are nicely spread out and was lovely being out of London and able to see the stars and get back to nature. Thank you for a lovely weekend.

Directions

The park is ten minutes’ drive from the M25, M1 and A1, with train links close by into the capital from the town of Radlett five minutes' drive, where the train station has a direct link to King's Cross.

Springfield Park is located off Ventura Park Industrial Estate. Once you turn into the industrial estate, drive straight for about 150 yards and as the road bends 90 degrees to the left, stop your car: you will see a bridleway right in front of you with a 'Private road. No access' signpost.

Drive onto this private road, over the railway bridge and keep to the left. Follow this road to the very end where you will see a large manor house. Please park up in the car park to the right and call us. A member of staff will come and show you around.

Local attractions

Whether you’re planning a day trip to London or not, Hertfordshire’s only city St Albans, should also be on your sightseeing list: visitors have been coming here for over 2000 years and it has one of the biggest city centre markets in the south-east.

Start off at the cathedral – you’ll see it over the skyline from most places in the city – for the longest cathedral nave in England, medieval wall paintings and the shrine of St Alban, the country’s first known Christian martyr. Verulamium Park just beyond the cathedral stands on the old Roman town of Verulamium and has 100 acres of parkland, an ornamental lake, leisure centre and a nine-hole golf course.

The Verulamium Museum covering Roman life in the city is on the edge of the park, as is Ye Olde Fighting Cocks pub, listed by the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest in England. That claim to fame is disputed by a couple of other pubs in the country; you should probably have a pint while you mull the matter over.

Another of St Alban’s main attractions, the Roman Theatre of Verulamium on Bluehouse Hill dates back to 210AD, and so is just the place to recite the ‘Friends, Romans, countrymen’ speech from Julius Caesar (ignore funny looks). For shows to spectate rather than star in, there are theatres in town putting on local and touring shows, with occasional plays in the grounds of the cathedral.

Shoppers will find the main high street names at The Maltings and Christopher Place as well as several specialty shops and a variety of markets throughout the town: the huge twice-weekly St Albans Market on St Peters Street with over 170 stalls; a monthly farmers’ market and an indoor flea market open daily among others.

Got Bart, Lisa and Maggie along with you? Take them to Butterfly World, ‘London’s own Eden Project’, with 20 acres of wildflower meadows, loads of activities and over 600 flutterers in the tropical butterfly house. Willows Farm Village has tractor rides, falconry displays and the summer A-maize-ing Maze; another maze is at Ferny Hill Farm in nearby Barnet.

You can also fly over to the de Havilland Aircraft Heritage museum 10 minutes away (by car, it should be pointed out) from the site with your little aviator enthusiast in tow. As its bursting with restored Havilland aircraft and artefacts a trip here is just plane exciting - and educational - where visitors young and not-so-young can take part in plenty of fun, hands-on learning opps.
