D’oh! If that’s your usual reaction to city hotel prices, give Springfield Park a go instead: it’s just outside London but is within the M25, so you can escape the city quickly or head in to see the sights. The thought of London making you shudder? The historic city of St Albans is just a few miles away.

Springfield Park was designed by its owner to reflect exactly what he’d want from a campsite: proper loos and showers in a well-maintained building, campfires allowed, a scenic non-commercial setting surrounded by woodland and – our favourite – a resident gourmet chef for those who don’t fancy slaving over the stove, with cooked breakfasts and evening barbecues available for a reasonable extra charge (king prawns and pork chops, anyone?).

Although Springfield Park is only five minutes’ drive from the M25, it’s peaceful and secluded (something you won’t find in the Simpson household), set on eight acres of landscaped grounds with 450 acres of woodland and streams to explore. Still feeling active? The instructor-led Archery Adventure on site is pretty much on target too.
