- Essex farm site with stabling for horses
- Fishing reservoir within five miles
- Next to a nature reserve: free entry included in accommodation price
It’s all things great and small at Lee Wick Cottages and Camping in the north Essex countryside – the site itself is cutely dinky, but comes with pods with plenty of space.
And we bet this is the only campsite in the country where you can get a side order of spuds when you stay – the farm focused on potato production before branching out into welcoming guests, and spuds are still grown on site.
Say hi to Robert in the farm office at the top of the lane, where he’ll often be found fulfilling his role of potato merchant. You might also find him around the horse stables – Lee Wick Farm has stabling for around 18 horses, which should keep equine enthusiasts entertained.
Or maybe you’d prefer to cast off instead at the nearby fishing reservoir, or bag a free pass to the neighbouring Essex Wildlife Trust Colne Point Nature Reserve: the road beyond the farm leads directly to the reserve.
The site welcomes well-behaved canine campers too.
Find nearby sites with availability…
Many sites set a maximum occupancy of 6/8 people per pitch, so try breaking your booking down into smaller groups to generate more results. For example, if you’re a group of 10, enter 5 people in your initial search and then book 2 pitches.
However, where the pitch or accommodation occupancy allows it, you can make a booking for up to 30 adults and 30 children in one booking.
To book multiple pitches or accommodation, use the 'Special requests' box on the booking page to ask to be sited together. Complete the booking form for the first booking (you can add a password and save your card so that we remember your details). Then click "Make another booking like this" at the top of the confirmation page to make the next booking.
Large groups: check the listing page for any group restrictions set out in the terms and section titled ‘Please note’.
Large tents/caravans: check the restrictions on unit dimensions to ensure your unit is suitable for the space you will be provided with.

Directions by road:
From the north or east: take the A14 to Ipswich and join the A12 heading towards Colchester.
From London and the west: take the A12 towards Ipswich.
Thereafter, on approaching Colchester take the A120 towards Harwich, then take the A133 exit to Clacton on Sea. At the roundabout take the A133 towards Clacton on Sea.
Take the first right turn to Great Bentley. At the next T-junction turn right, and then take the immediate left. Stay on this road out of Great Bentley and continue for a further 2.5 miles until you reach the next T-junction (B1027). Turn left here. Continue for a further 1.5 miles then take the turning right into St Osyth (Colchester Road).
At the crossroads in the centre of St Osyth, take the right turn onto "The Bury". Stay on this road passing the Priory on the right, then the recreation ground on the left and cross the causeway by the boatyard.
At the top of the hill there is a sharp right hand corner; Lee Wick Lane is 200 yards after this corner (don’t take the lane on the bend).
Turn into Lee Wick Lane and continue down the lane for about half a mile, passing the farm at the top, until you reach Lee Wick Farm yard. After you bounce over the first speed bump, you will see Stable Cottage on your right after about 40 yards. Turn in next to Stable Cottage between the two white posts (look for the camping and caravanning club sign) and drive down the gravel track where you will see the Pod and the tourer site beyond. For pod bookings please park beside the pod. The keys for the Pod are located in the small grey key safe on the post nearest the first step up onto the decking.
If you are using a sat nav, the postcode is CO16 8ES, but be aware that on some devices the lane is listed as Beach Road, which is incorrect and you may find yourself at St. Osyth beach and not Lee Wick.
Please bring a torch as the site is unlit.
Directions by rail:
Nearest railway stations are Colchester (14 miles), Clacton on Sea (5.7 miles) and Great Bentley (5.7 miles). Both can be accessed from London Liverpool Street. Bus services run from Colchester and Clacton on Sea. There is no bus service from Great Bentley. St Osyth Taxis 01255 820123 will collect from each.
Off site, there’s plenty to do in this corner of Essex, such as sailing, golfing, walking, cycling and splashing around in the nearby indoor pool. A stroll around the historic neighbouring farm village St Osyth is also recommended to see the Priory which has been looking over the village centre since the twelfth century.
Get sandy on the two beaches within two miles, walk along the seawall to seaside town Clacton-on-Sea to buy fish and chips and a Kiss Me Quick hat, or double up on the seaside by also visiting tiny and quirky Frinton-on-Sea. There are plenty of nature spotting and birdwatching opportunities in the area too, with regular local sightings of the once rare marsh harrier bird of prey.
Further afield, Colchester is a quick drive or bus ride away, and as England’s oldest recorded town there’ll be plenty of historical sights to see – have a schlep around Colchester Castle then keep the kids happy by taking them to the first-class zoo.
The famous Suffolk Heritage Coastline is also a short drive away with towns Southwold and Aldesburgh to browse around, or keep up the history theme by nosying around nearby Wivenhoe, Brightlingsea and Maldon.
