  • Secluded site an hour from London
  • Busy programme of family activities and entertainment in high season
  • Fishing spots, pool, playground, amusement arcade, café and bar
You might find it a tad hard to believe that Steeple Bay Holiday Park is just an hour from London; this tucked away corner of the Essex coast feels fably remote, with its far-reaching watery vistas and backwaters teeming with birds. Guests here can congratulate themselves on having impeccable taste: the seclusion of this spot makes it a firm favourite with the rich and famous, who can sometimes be spotted touching down in their helicopters for a stay on Osea Island, just across the estuary of the River Blackwater. Take a boat out from Steeple Bay’s slipway and who knows who you might bump into as you navigate the peaceful creeks surrounding the site... Steeple Bay Holiday Park has a good-sized, heated outdoor pool with a separate splash pool for those still sporting armbands - and the pretty grounds contain some great spots for fishing, a playground and a sports field (ideal for working off any excesses in the café and Riverside Bar). As it’s a Park Holidays site, Steeple Bay guests also benefit from a fun selection of activities for kids in the Loopy Club; the kids’ shows and competitions run into the early evening, and thereafter you’ll find bingo, live music and more in the clubhouse during the holiday season. There’s also an amusements arcade for rainy days. As for the basics, these are well covered too: you’ll find good showers and loos, a sheltered washing-up area, a launderette, small shop and free wifi in the clubhouse.

Local attractions

Nearby Maldon is an attractive medieval market town where one of the highlights is Promenade Park, with its splash park, sandpits and pirate galleon, perfect for keeping the kids entertained for a few hours. Alternatively, there are days out around and about to suit all tastes: cruise along the River Blackwater aboard a traditional Thames barge; sample the plonk at the local vineyards; uncover the area’s rich and diverse history via the many local heritage centres and museums; wander around the winsome Witham gardens or the show-stopping Royal Horticultural Society Garden at Hyde Hall; or hit the zoo in Colchester, also home to a contemporary art gallery, a castle and a museum. Other attractions nearby include Marsh Farm Country Park, a working farm where kids can get close to farm animals and run around in the adventure play areas, and where all ages can stroll through the country park, with its coastal walks and scenic views of the River Crouch. There's also Colchester Castle and its museums, exploring 2,000 years' worth of some of the most important events in British history.
