- Private caravan with own garden and barbecue
- Constable Country: 1.5 miles from Dedham and close to Flatford Mill
- Collect complimentary eggs from the laying hens and meet the horses
Just one... that's how many caravans are available at Dedham Camping near Colchester in Essex. This is scenic land, filled with paths for strolls and cycles and about half an hour from the sea at Clacton and other beaches: bag berths at the single static here to have an artistically budget break in Constable Country all to your party's very own selves.
And it's a rather nice setup on site too. Dedham Camping is family run and on the decorative grounds of a five-acre smallholding a mile and a half from the village of Dedham and close to Flatford Mill – yes, the pic with the horse that was painted by Mr Constable.
There are views of the half-acre garden and a playground for the kids, but the caravan is set in its own fenced garden area for privacy (and free use of the on-site barbecue). Off-street parking is provided for three cars and the site also has secure storage for bicycles.
Rather appropriately for a site near Flaftford Mill, there be horses here too: pony rides may sometimes be available depending on rider age, size and ability (please ask on arrival), but equine enthusiasts of all sizes are welcome to come and meet the horses under the Dedham Camping team's supervision.
That all sounds simply super to us – but there's yet more: guests can collect complimentary eggs from the smallholding's laying hens and pick from the many fruit trees in the garden when in season.

Many sites set a maximum occupancy of 6/8 people per pitch, so try breaking your booking down into smaller groups to generate more results. For example, if you’re a group of 10, enter 5 people in your initial search and then book 2 pitches.
However, where the pitch or accommodation occupancy allows it, you can make a booking for up to 30 adults and 30 children in one booking.
To book multiple pitches or accommodation, use the 'Special requests' box on the booking page to ask to be sited together. Complete the booking form for the first booking (you can add a password and save your card so that we remember your details). Then click "Make another booking like this" at the top of the confirmation page to make the next booking.

Flatford Mill should be a first stop when in this part of Essex... the eighteenth century mill these days and its adjoining miller's cottage are both Grade I-listed and managed by the National Trust, which has added children's activity packs and regular events to the site as well as a guided four-mile walk through the landscape that inspired Constable. (There was quite a bit of it, as additional walks around Dedham and Dedham Vale will show.)
The Essex beach at Clacton-on-Sea is about half an hour's drive from Dedham Camping for seasidey days out; also stop off at neighbouring Southend to see the world's longest pleasure pier and have a ride on the Southend Cliff Railway.
Nearby ancient and Roman Colchester is the oldest recorded town in Britain and should have at least a couple of days devoted to it: see the castle and Castle Museum with mammoth exhibit on the Roman days and ways here, the Natural History Museum and the works at the Minories Gallery.
