It’s a tad ironic that St Osyth is the driest destination in the UK, because Seawick Holiday Park is teeming with things to do in wet weather. Park Holidays have categorised this as one of their ‘active and fun’ sites for families and there’s lashings to do for all ages: the Loopy kids’ clubs for ages 5—14, an indoor amusement arcade with pool tables, and The Venue, Seawick’s vibrant entertainment complex complete with free WiFi and live acts. The basics are well looked after too, with a mini mart store for provisions and a launderette on site. Guests can also use the facilities at the neighbouring Park Holiday sites: there’s a heated indoor pool at St Osyth Beach next door and a fully stuffed fishing lake at Oaklands. You won’t even have to dash out for provisions – the Essex Seagull Bar & Grill dishes up food and shows live sport on the big screens, and there was a new 1950s-style café added in 2012. But as it’s the sunshine coast, there’s plenty on hand outdoors too: bumper cars and an adventure playground at the park for starters, and once the sun’s shining it’s only a short stroll or a quick road train trip to the sands at St Osyth – and just a few miles to the pier and fairground at Clacton-on-Sea.

Local attractions

As well as the pier and funfair, Clacton-on-Sea has golf, two theatres and an annual airshow with vintage planes including Spitfires and Hurricanes; shake the sand from your toes at St Osyth too and have a look around its twelfth century priory and the war museum at the Martello tower. This is bird and beast as well as beach terrain, with acres of nature reserves all over Essex and rare sightings of birds: Howlands Marsh and Colne Point are both within easy reach of Seawick – head to the latter to see nesting little terns or hark at the nightingales at Fingringhoe Wick overlooking the Colne Estuary. There are wildlife gardens at Langdon Nature Reserve inland and to the west of Clacton; for formal beds and borders the Beth Chatto Gardens at Colchester have regular events, workshops and fairs. Colchester in general is a must-see as England’s oldest recorded town: try on togas at Colchester Castle Museum and take the Lost Madagascar Express’ road train at Colchester Zoo. Outside Essex, the Suffolk Heritage Coastline is a quick drive away with three RSPB reserves, sandy cliffs and seaside towns and villages such as Aldeburgh, Orford and Southwold. Hardy souls can follow the 50-mile Suffolk Coast Path to Lowestoft starting from Felixstowe a little way along the coast from Seawick.
