  • Just over an hour's drive from London and 20 minutes from Colchester
  • A 10-minute drive from the coast at Clacton and Frinton-on-Sea
  • Within easy walking distance of the local village's pubs and takeaways
Don’t get too engrossed in your book on the train if you’re farming yourself and family out to this Essex coast site from London: you’ll be there in a jiffy. An hour and 15 minutes from Liverpool Street lands you at Thorpe-le-Soken, from where it's a minuscule quarter of a mile along a rural footpath to the acreage at Grange Farm Campsite. Arriving from elsewhere? The farm is at the end of the A133 from Colchester (20 minutes away by car), although personally you might like to get someone else to drive so you can get on with your holiday reading… Although it’s within 10 minutes’ drive of the coast at Clacton, Frinton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze, the vibe at popular Grange Farm is pretty peaceful, set deep in Essex countryside with room galore for pitches. Horse riding is a canterable mile away; and tennis courts, a golf course and a heated indoor pool four miles away – just in case you don’t fancy braving Essex sea waters. Walkies from Thorpe-le-Soken through the rural surroundings include ones to the coast, to Landermere, to Beaumont Quay, to Holland Haven Country Park, to the village fish and chip shop… Speaking of fish and chips (always), a chippy, takeaways, three restaurants, three pubs, a petrol station and a food shop are in the village; all three pubs dish up nosh. Facilities on site – showers, toilets and chemical disposal point – are basic but kept very clean. There’s no laundry block, but a launderette is three miles away.

Local attractions

Birdwatching, beaches, seaside towns, coastal constitutions and the city of Colchester are all close to hand from Grange Farm Campsite – if you should tire of these (tsk), Orford and the Suffolk Heritage Coast await a little further north. The sands of Holland-on-Sea, four miles from the farm, are quieter than the main Essex seaside towns of Clacton-on-Sea, Frinton-on-Sea and Southend-on-Sea: like most of the surrounding countryside, this is birdwatching land to have twitchers all of a-flutter. Holland Haven Country Park, between Clacton and Frinton, covers over 100 acres of coastal birdwatching landscape to spy migrant birds, sandpipers, warblers and the like; elsewhere, several nature reserves include Great Holland Pits, Soken Woods, The Naze at Walton-on-the-Naze, Howlands Marsh at St Osyth and the RSPB Stour Estuary reserve at Wrabness.

Liked: Liked the layout of the farm. Staff very friendly and helpful. It was so refreshing to stay somewhere with such clean and modern washroom facilities . Absolutely spotless! With air fresheners and washing up liquid in the very clean side room used for washing up. A lovely quiet few days away on the farm.

Electric grass motorhome pitch (family)

Liked: There was a friendly welcome and the pitch site was spacious. The site has approx 20 pitches so relatively peaceful (tents in another field other side of barn). We were located between the horse stables and a lake with cornfields behind so very pleasing. Thorpe le soken is a 7 minute walk away along the cornfield and then the church (Victorian era) graveyard . Specific Tesco express and several pubs. This is an ideal base for visiting Frinton approx 4 miles away with a fabulous long sandy beach and highly recommend cricket ground.

Disliked: Small toilet block 1 shower perhaps could be improved to have a few more?

Electric grass motorhome pitch (two person)

Liked: Great location as central to everything we wanted to see. Supermarket and lovely pub 5 mins walk. Great areas to go walking and exploring. Hosts were helpful and friendly. Pitches are a good size. Its a large working farm but it is not noisy and you are able to relax. Clean, tidy and well kept.

Disliked: Showers and toilets slightly dated and possibly not sufficient for the amount of people on site.
