  • Sausages, bacon and free-range eggs available on site
  • Near Drusillas Park, Knock Hatch Adventure Park and the South Downs
‘Fantastic’, ‘amazing, ‘beautiful countryside’, ‘lovely location’, ‘A little slice of tranquillity hidden away in the East-Sussex countryside’… book a break at Hale Farm Campsite to add your own experience of this lovely little place in England’s south east. Both site and surroundings come in for excellent accolades from former guests: the site's green, peaceful and family-friendly setting, and the location on the Weald Way at the head of the Cuckmere Valley. There’s easy access from here to the South Downs National Park, High Weald and the coast to explore by car, bike or on foot… or you could cart the kids to Drusillas Park 15 minutes’ drive away, or to the coast at Brighton and Hastings within 45 minutes. The farm is five minutes’ drive from Chiddingly, within walking distance of a village shop and two recommended pubs. Guests of all ages are most welcome to meet the Hale Farm donkeys, pedigree flocks of Lleyn and Ryeland sheep, pygmy goats, ponies, free-range chickens, geese and ducks, all of whom can be greeted and fed daily. As a working farm, fresh eggs and home-produced sausages and bacon are also available to buy… and yes, campfires are allowed. The site has a spacious accommodation field with no set pitches, alongside well-kept amenities of hot showers and compost toilets. And the final, excellent, little touch? The friendly Hale Farm owner visits pitches every day with logs, kindling and barbecue packs for sale – you might see that as worthy of a glowing review or two too…

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely quiet site, spacious pitches. Immaculate facilities & nice hot showers. Great to visit the farm each morning and the coffee / ice cream van was very welcome. Fire pits were fab and we loved star gazing at night. The whole site was very well thought out. Also easy to access walks (footpaths) from the site. Scott was really welcoming and helpful through our stay.

Disliked: 1 or 2 more loos would have been amazing but we would stay again regardless- really impressed with how clean they were kept.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Spacious site, plenty of space and best of all a proper fire pit in the ground! Great facilities, the compost toilets were very impressive and clean but there are flushing toilets on site too, as well as showers and washing up facilities. The campsite owners were lovely and helpful, the logs and produce were very good. The animals were adorable! We really enjoyed feeding leaves to the donkeys and giving them a stroke, and the goats were so cute, especially with their kids!

Disliked: Ground was a bit slopey but not too bad.

Local attractions

What a lot there is to do around here… and that’s just the strolls, hikes and bike rides around the High Weald and the South Downs National Park… This is spectacular wildlife-watching land too, such as at Arlington Reservoir (10 minutes’ drive), for spotting geese, cormorants, grebes and black swans around the waters and from the birdhide. There’s also the hillside around the huge chalk figure of the Long Man of Wilmington 20 minutes away and spying the inhabitants of the surrounding Cuckmere Valley and nearby Cuckoo Trail. Access the Cuckoo Trail 10 minutes’ drive away at Hailsham for a pedal along its 14-mile route from Heathfield to Eastbourne Park. Other options are Blackberry Farm Park (five minutes), the Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare (10 minutes) and Spring Barn Farm (25 minutes). For arty types, Farley Farm House, home of surrealists Lee Miller and Roland Penrose and visited by the likes of Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró, has its gallery within a few minutes’ drive of the farm. Those with a head for history have plenty to browse around hereabouts too, such as Michelham Priory (10 minutes), Herstmonceux and Lewes castles (both 20 minutes), and vintage rides on the Bluebell Railway, accessed half an hour away in Sheffield Park.
