General

  • Full seven miles of golden beach and grassy hillocks
  • Nearby the park is the SSSI Rye Harbour Nature Reserve
  • Twin attractions of Hastings Castle plus Battle Abbey and Battlefield

There are a full seven miles of golden beach and grassy hillocks at Camber Sands in Rye – here, da dunes do run (and run). And with Camber Sands Holiday Park just steps away, there’s no reason Rye you wouldn’t pack your bucket and spade for a week or two in East Sussex…

Directly opposite all this crumbly goodness is Camber Sands Holiday Park, with a fully family-friendly vibe and a heap of activities and entertainment for all ages.

After a morning dip or proudly constructing the Best Sandcastle Ever on the beach, clamber back to Camber to dip your toes into one of four heated indoor pools (one each, should you be so inclined) or plunge into the Jacuzzi and sauna, available to the grownups for a small extra charge.

Little people, meanwhile, can monkey around on the multisports field and adventure playground – rather thoughtfully, the latter is beside a decked area so you can supervise the offspring from over the top of your book.

Kids also have many daytime activities available for tots to teens: Pipsqueak's Mousehouse is especially for the under-fives, and there’s loads more to pick from whatever your picky little one’s tastes, from ballet to archery to football on the sporty side, and trivia, dances and karaoke for those who prefer to take things a little easier.

Crazy golf and go-karting are also available on site for an extra fee.

For the evening shift, shift to the Showbar for a regular lineup of music and entertainment from local and visiting acts, karaoke and themed nights; tums are covered from morning to night at the Boathouse restaurant and fish and chip bar with takeaway.

When ambling off site, the local bus service stops right outside the park, and Rye train station is a 10-minute drive away.

This site is a member of Parkdean Resorts group.

    Practically on the beach.
Was given a pitch very close to toilet block.
    Quiet pitches.
    Entertainment at night.
    Friendly staff.

    Disliked:

The restaurant was overpriced and the food was not worth the price one bit.

Swimming pool was meant to be "heated" yet was freezing, temperature was displayed on the wall at 31 degrees Celsius.

Toilet block could have been cleaned more often.

We asked reception on a number of occasions where the freezer was to put our ice packs and was told near the swimming pool in the laundrette, turns out it was not there, it was in the toilet block which we only discovered it on the morning of our departure.

Camber sands is practically in the middle of nowhere with the nearest supermarket being 25 minutes away.

Fabulous hot showers that were not on a timer & adjustable temperature. The private family shower room was spacious and looks newly refurbished. The staff were amazing and very accomodating. Our request for a pitch not too far from the toilet for my disabled mother was good. Also the pitch sizes are very spaciouse too. Plenty of room to set up. Very easy going and quiet.
The site had everything for families and more. The food in the restaurant was also very reasonable and the 2 mini breakfasts for £5.99 if your not into cooking defintely good value for money. Also im vegetarian/vegan so they were really accomodating to giving me extra options with quorn instead of meat and it was no trouble at all.
    Definately will be back!

Sean on the touring field needs to get sense of humour told me my home motor is to big even though you put on pitched up .com the size of the van and two minutes later in rolled a 50 foot Rv lol and a twin rear wheeled motor home. The shower block, good hot water but how dirty just like the toilets it's not hard to send someone to check on this and clean it but over our weekend stay it was the same each day .. boat house good food but again sticky floors and chairs and tables they need an adult to supervise the kids and it will be an number one site like it used to be in 2010

Our first visit and we will be back! Greeted by friendly staff who showed us where all the facilities were. The toilets and showers were really clean. We didn't get to use the pool or club house as we took our dogs.
The site is right on the beach which was perfect
Loads for children to do - kids were having a great time in the splash park!

    Disliked:

We ate lunch at the pub onsite but could only order from a restricted menu as we were sitting outside. Would have liked to have the choice of the bar menu

From the M25, take the M20. Come off at Junction 10 (Ashford International Station) and onto the A2070 signposted to Brenzett. Follow the signs to Hastings and Rye, staying on the A259, and one mile before Rye, take a left turn signposted Camber. The holiday park is about 3 miles along this road.

Local attractions

Slap sandy bang opposite the holiday park, Camber Sands is a family-friendly beach, crammed with wildlife on its dunes, larks soaring overhead, and even allowing beach barbecues (ask Rother District Council for permish in advance).

Look out for moths, skylarks and the yellow flowers of the sea spurge dune plant; wildlife hunters and naturalists can also see many more species at the nearby SSSI Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, which has free entry, a network of footpaths, bird hides and spottable species such as marsh frogs, terns of several types, brown hares and nocturnal bats, badgers and foxes.

Both the village of Camber and the town of Rye have plenty of pickings for those staying nearby: start off at Camber for Camber Castle, built by – who would have guessed it around these parts – Henry No 8, and now managed by English Heritage. Access is by guided tour only and includes a tour around Rye Harbour nature reserve.

Go forth to Rye next for all things battle including the twin attractions of Hastings Castle plus Battle Abbey and Battlefield, both with lots of info for curious sorts about who won (Wills) and what significance the Battle of Hastings had in English history (quite a bit).

Rye has quite the smuggling history too: if you can get to the twelfth century Mermaid Inn, former meeting place of the Hawkshead Gang, you’ll be rewarded these days with an award-winning experience; while St Clements Caves, a haunt of former smugglers’, a hideout for Victorian workhouse escapees and a bomb shelter World War II shelter, has A Smuggler’s Adventure narrated by Hairy Jack and his team.

You’ll be mightily impressed too by the teeny genius at Rye Town Model Village, 700 years of Rye history laid out in miniature detail and with an audio show telling the town’s tale.

Heading east towards Kent, explorers can easily reach the sands of Folkestone and Hythe, the towering fun of the Grade II listed Old Lighthouse at Dungeness, and the ferry port at Dover for a day trip to la belle France.

Must see

  • Camber Sands (0.6 miles)
  • Great Dixter House and Gardens (10.3 miles)
  • A Smugglers Adventure at St Clements Caves (10.7 miles)

  • Lamb House (3.4 miles)
