Plumpton College: South Downs Way cycle route

General

  • In the South Downs National Park, with fab views over local hills
  • A 10-minute drive from Lewes and 25 from central Brighton
  • Surrounded by several walking trails, including the South Downs Way

Tack a scenic side trip onto a Brighton break with a stay at Plumpton College, a star of a spot in the 800-hectare grounds of an agricultural college. At the eastern end of the South Downs National Park, with hillside views all around, it may be close to top towns like Lewes (10 minutes’ drive) but has the feel of being deep in the countryside.

Wake up to green panoramas, then stroll out of the site and across the road to access the South Downs’ hundreds of miles’ worth of walking paths. Follow the flagship South Downs Way, then bound around Brighton’s streets and beach (25 minutes) or wander by the chalky white cliffs of the coast at the Seven Sisters Country Park (35 minutes’ drive).

Spending on site is also fab: there are animals to admire as you stroll around and plenty of space for playing games and general running about. Each pitch is roomy, measuring 15m by 10m, and pleasingly flat (as a result of being set up on the college's sports field). A pub is a few minutes’ walk away for food (and drinks) on tap, or you can stay on site and whip up grub on the barbecue or campfire while chatting to your travel crew.

Shower and toilet facilities have been upgraded for the 2021 season, and on Fridays and Saturdays the college's dining room is open for takeaway meals (particularly handy if you're in need of easy eats at the end of a long walk…) Dogs are also allowed at this family-friendly site, so no one gets left behind.

Stayed for 2 nights with teenager and toddler.
Lovely and helpful staff. Great location for Brighton & South Downs and easy to find from main road.
In the grounds of an Agricultural collage, a large field with lush grass and shade in pitches along the line of trees. Toddler enjoyed seeing the horses.
Facilities are basic (portaloos/portashowers) and washing up station but are completely adequate for a short break.
Breakfast (Full English/veggie/cereal etc) is available 8-10am Sat & Sun in the collage canteen which we found really helpful to save washing up. Dinner also available sat eve I think. Would stay again :)

    Disliked:

First day the showers were cold in the two locations we tried, although on the second day we found the third location (in the main building) which were lovely and warm.
Would have been nice to have recycling options as only one big bin to put everything in (seemed a bit off-brand for an agricultural college!)

From the manager...

Dear Sally
Thank you for your Feedback, My apologies re the Cold Showers, this was due to a Boiler breakdown which has now been resolved, but thank you for letting our team know on the day. I note you comment re recycling options as a College we do have recycling in place and we will look to see how we improve this on the Camping site. Other wise I was pleased to read you had a lovely weekend.
Manager.

From the manager...

Dear Elizabeth
Thank you for your feedback, My apologies for the Cold Showers this was due to a boiler breakdown which has now been resolved, Re the porta showers I have asked our supplier to attend to look at the water pressure.
Thank you for your booking and I was pleased that you had an enjoyable weekend.

We had a lovely stay over the weekend at Plumpton. Like the reviews say, Yolanda and the other staff are really friendly and helpful. It wasn't that busy so was nice and relaxing. Location is great, 25 mins from Brighton / other beaches and 20 mins from Lewes and really pretty country side.

There's a canteen on site so you can get some breakfast/tea/coffee and you can buy a bbq/little fire for £10.

Showers were good, the loos are portacabins.

    Disliked:

It could have perhaps been clearer that the camping site is on the rugby field of Plumpton college, so although you are in beautiful countryside the camp itself is not the most scenic.

The site was also quite busy in general as there were horse competitions so horses warming up on the camp site which didn't bother us particularly but it could do. If the camp site was busier it might not have been the best, but for us it was peaceful and had everything we needed for a weekend camping break. Would happily come back

Courtney, Amy and Yolanda, the campsite wardens, were so helpful and accommodating to us. As we had traveled without a car, they helpfully offered to give us a lift to the station and from the supermarket and were always very friendly and up for a chat.

Toilets and showers were good and very clean, plenty of hot water and water pressure. Lovely walks to Lewes and Brighton with some stunning views and great pubs.

    Disliked:

A bit far from the train station. Would recommend either arriving a little earlier when the bus is still running or pre-booking a taxi from the station to the campsite, or alternatively bringing a car as there is plenty of onsite parking. May be an option for the campsite to offer a shuttle service to and from the station in the future.

Local attractions

When you’re not heading for the hills around the site on South Downs strolls, look to the market town of Lewes for local things to do: this traditional spot has one of the UK’s oldest outdoor pools, along with a 16th-century castle and a handful of must-see museums.

If you’re one for getting wet, you could also indulge in a bit of wild swimming in the Cuckmere River. Rather admire aquatic attractions than submerge yourself in them? Amble around the Arlington reservoir instead.

For a complete change of scenery, get to Glyndebourne (20 minutes) for opera performances in a 600-year-old stately home, then make a beeline for Brighton and modern entertainment options, from comedy shows to nightclubbing. Swing by the Eastern-inspired pavilion as well – a building Queen Victoria referred to as ‘strange’ – and pull up a striped deckchair on the pebbly Brighton beach for a breather.

If you’re up for more coastal explores, head to Seven Sisters Country Park and take on some of the clifftop walks, detouring to Drusillas Park along the way to see animals ranging from scarlet ibis to sloths. This is also Europe’s first Hello Kitty-themed attraction – purrfect news if you have any fans of the feline character in your family.

Must see

  • Preston Manor (5.6 miles)
  • Royal Pavilion (6.5 miles)
  • Brighton Museum & Art Gallery (6.5 miles)

  • Monk's House (5.9 miles)
  • Sheffield Park Garden (7.3 miles)
