Mr. McGregor's Secret Garden: Inside the bell tent

General

  • Glamping in a 'secret garden' in the South Downs National Park
  • A 10-minute drive from Lewes; 20 minutes from Brighton
  • Bell tents among orchards and veg patches, with woodland hammocks

Plum and apple trees, daisies and veg patches, lawns and wildflowers… step into the secluded East Sussex site Mr McGregor’s Secret Garden and it’s like stepping straight into a scene from a Beatrix Potter book…

This is classic English countryside scenery, in a private garden in the village of Plumpton, and it’s a rather special spot for a relaxing break in the South Downs National Park. Come along as a couple or bring the family – there’s a lovely safe space to play, with woods and paths to explore all around and farm animals next door.

There are only a couple of bell tents on site here, so it’s all pleasingly peaceful too. Each tent is fully made up with either a double futon mattress on a wooden base or two single airbeds, and lots of handy extras are provided for a cosy, comfy stay (think towels, a small barbecue per tent and hot water bottles on request).

This is ‘slow living’, say the owners, and you’re encouraged to take your time here, perhaps boiling water for a bucket bath, relaxing in the woodland hammocks or building a fire (in the designated area) for a marshmallow-fuelled evening. Amplified music isn't allowed here so there's nothing to disturb the natural soundtrack.

Facilities on site include a cold water tap (for drinking, cooking and washing up) and Mr McGregor’s shed, with basic amenities and a gas ring for cooking. You can also buy a solar bag shower for a proper alfresco experience.

Time to head out? Have a chat with the owners, who’ve lived around here for many years and have all sorts of tips to share (including some great bike trails and an excellent pub just a couple of minutes’ walk away).

very quiet and peaceful site with fruit trees (could literally be a secret garden). Great location if you want a walk in the forest and hills or go to the seaside and beach by car. If you want a break from it all and be back to nature with outdoor facilities and you are prepared to leave the luuries of the city life behind, this place is perfect for you. The host is very friendly and accommodating and the stay is very good value for money.

What an amazing find!! We were the first guests at Mr McGregor's secret garden. We couldn't have hoped for a more tranquil, idyllic location. The cosy bell tent with it's rugs, comfy futon and fairy lights was the perfect resting place with little added touches of games, eye masks and ear plugs to help block out the pesky cockerel's early wake up call from next door (although we didn't find this a problem at all) the firepit was perfect to keep warm and toast marshmallows with its log seats. There was a small gas stove for boiling water, a small BBQ ( we had brought our own too) and washing up facilities in the shed. The camping toilet in it's private hut had all the necessities and was lit up at night by a string of solar fairy lights to help guide you in the dark. There was a private spot for an outdoor shower, we took a solar shower bag and hung it from the tree. It provided the perfect spot for cleaning up after a long day of exploring! From the bottom of the garden there are amazing views and you can walk across the road, through the woods and right into the southdowns, stopping at the Half Moon pub on the corner for a well earned drink on the way back. Less than 10 minutes drive away is Barcombe Mills which is a lovely walk along the river and perfect for a spot of wild swimming. Lewes is about 10 minutes away by car and has some lovely places to eat and Brighton is less than half an hour away! It was just the perfect location!! Our host Tam was so welcoming, explaining where everything was and showing us how to get into the southdowns. She really had thought of everything!

Local attractions

This is the South Downs National Park, so that means walks galore… There are miles of trails around here, including one just across the road that takes you up the Blackcap hill for some top views. Hit the South Downs Way nearby for a longer walk, or head to one of the local towns for a stroll that mixes up rural scenery and historic architecture – Lewes (10 minutes’ drive) and Alfriston (25 minutes) are good picks for this.

Also around the area are plenty of ideas for visits, including the National Trust Monk’s House (15 minutes), the pretty colours of the Butterfly Gardens at Middleton Common Farm (10 minutes) and local tipples at Ridgeview Wine Estate (10 minutes). A day of meeting animals at Drusillas Park (25 minutes) or a ride on the Bluebell Railway (20 minutes) might well be popular with the kids too.

And of course there’s the coast… it’s a 20-minute drive to Brighton from here for the beach, marina and Sea Life Centre, or 35 minutes to the gorgeous white cliffs at Seven Sisters Country Park.
