General

  • Small site among spectacular scenery on the River Ouse
  • Campfires encouraged: forage for kindling around the site
  • Rope swings, hammocks and play area

On the banks of the River Ouse opposite the Bluebell Railway, Ouse Meadow is a site for back-to-nature stays in the scenic Sussex countryside. The emphasis here is on wild camping in peace and quiet, with campfires allowed.

Pitches aren't marked, so you can pitch in any spot that suits. Several rope swings, hammocks and a play area including swingball and badminton are on hand to keep the kids happy.

The owners believe that a small campfire is a crucial part of family camping: foraging for kindling is allowed (and popular with kids), but for ecological reasons big logs from the woods shouldn't be burned and obviously no branches should be cut from trees.

Amenities on site include a drinking water tap, toilets and a hot shower. The owners sell sacks of logs, kindling and firelighters.

Please note this is a small basic site, so has no washing-up facilities. The team also asks that all rubbish is taken home with you on departure.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

This is a small basic site so has no washing-up facilities. The team asks that all rubbish is taken home with you on departure.

Great campsite. There are two fields, split for families and for adults. We stayed on the adults field for two nights and had a great time. Very peaceful and the organisers were friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend.

Spacious fields so we didn't need to be on top of other pitches, campfires are allowed and the owner come around to sell logs a couple times each day. Easy-going and relaxed atmosphere. Would return!

    Disliked:

Toilets could be kept cleaner. Some background noise occasionally from trucks next door but not so much that it bothered us.

The peace and space in the adult only field next to the river under shady trees. We brought bikes and cycled to several local pubs. A day out on a steam train was a highlight. You can take bikes and the station at Horsted is a perfect 1935 timewarp. Step back into the Railway Children. Site staff are very friendly and deliver logs to your firepit. There is a lovely bluebell wood next door to collect kindling. Camping as it should be.

    Disliked:

    Only one shower for everyone.
